It was my first AC game and I loved it, it gets a bad rap in my opinion. It's pretty cheap these days and the start can be pretty exacting in terms of mastering the stealth etc. and it has QTE's and a few PITA follow missions but overall it's fun, has some good crafting and combat. If you are interested in that piece of history it's interesting as well. I put down Odyssey, dabbled in AC1, and then put that down too after a while. I had fun with AC1 but it got repetitive. I do intend to go back to it later, as with Odyssey.
I'm a little over halfway through AC2 now. I'm enjoying it much more in comparison. The Templar-Assassin narrative is still goofy to me, but I'm liking Ezio and his personal narrative. It's not necessarily all that deep, but it has a charm to it. Florence and Venice are beautiful locations that draw me in. It's a shame they didn't make enter-able buildings more common until later entries.
I've watched parts of AC3 on Youtube (mostly Connor roaming around the woodlands and New York, not as much story content since I don't want to know a lot going in). It certainly doesn't look bad. I wouldn't say I'm a fan of Colonial American history; in fact, when I first found out that AC3 was set there back in the day I dreaded even getting into it since I always thought of it as dismal (I did in fact play AC3 back in the day for a very brief window of time, which I mentioned earlier in the thread. I'd venture this was part of the reason I didn't stick with it as long as 2, Brotherhood, or Unity). Yet what I've seen recently interests me. The gameplay looks improved and the woodland areas seem as if they have potential.
The first thing that drew me to it was the Native American protagonist and the view of that piece of history from that perspective. The second was as you pointed out the wilderness areas were fun to explore and even the hunting and crafting were great as was setting up your own little settlement. Playing AC Rogue afterwards also gave some great back story to some of the characters. The remastered version should also make everything look better but I have not played all of that.

So apparently Ubisoft is now pushing pop up ads in AC Mirage. I saw the vid just now. A player brings up his map but instead of a map, he gets an advertisement. Just as well I don't like Basim and not interested in buying a game starring him. I'm not buying any more AC games if Ubisoft persist with the pop ups. It was a "bug" and has been removed, it also isn't the first time that Ubisoft has done it. The explanation is that they were pushing the sale on the launch window of their games and typical poor programming was along linking it to the map. I think it was there for less than 24 hours.

Previewing parts of these games on Youtube, I'm the most excited to play Black Flag, Rogue, Syndicate, and (return to) Unity. Origins' world is stunning, but I'm not sure how I feel about the gameplay. The majority of what I've seen is outpost infiltration and "lighter" combat that seems to be the norm in the rpgs (movement and attacks are very quick and fluid, which removes a satisfying feeling of weight to the game in my experience with Odyssey). Hopefully Origins plays better. The skill-tree elements in it appear to be better integrated in real-time than they are in Odyssey, thankfully.
Also, why did I say "back in the day"? I hate that phrase. I guess it's not as bad if you're talking about release dates lol

Change of plans since last time. I went back to Odyssey and 2, played a few missions in each, then decided to take a break again. My interest in Odyssey has been renewed after progressing the main story and respeccing my ability points to put greater focus on stealth, although the gameplay is still hardly ideal. Despite that, my mind was gravitating toward the "middle" era of Assassin's Creed which I've been eager to visit from the get-go. On Christmas Day, I downloaded AC3 Remastered, Rogue Remastered, and Black Flag (I already have the rest that come after sans Valhalla).
Tonight, I finished AC3, making it the first game in the series I've completed. My impression is...eh. This game is inventive, and it deserves credit for that. The naval sections were enjoyable (excluding one mission) and are a welcome addition to the franchise for me. Many changes to the combat were also welcome, but there are undeniable issues with the combat nonetheless...Without going too much into things in this post, this game felt "cinematic"/movie-like in the sense that the devs came up with all these innovations but only gave us a small taste of them (as needed). Many things were squished into small sequences in the main narrative, and there seemed to be a lot of focus on tighter storytelling, seemingly at the expense of the overworld and actual stealth. The story did quite a few great things, yet was largely disappointing. Those last two sequences especially were a disaster. I liked Connor and Haytham (Sequence 11 was such a shitty send-off for him). I almost wish Haytham stayed as the main character and the game was about pulling the strings as a Templar. That's my vague, general take on the game. Eventually I hope to write a more in-depth analysis either here or somewhere else.
If I had to rate...I don't know... ~6/10. I'm fairly certain Odyssey and 2 will rank higher for me. I don't regret playing it. Going in, I didn't exactly have high expectations, and it was the game of that "middle" era I was the least excited to try. Black Flag just finished downloading, so here's to that!

I'm currently on Sequence 5 in Black Flag. I'm loving it so far! This is the most immersed I've been in AC.
AC3 in the rear-view mirror now becomes more and more...bleh...the further I get into Black Flag. I'm thankful it's over with. AC3 is, from an impartial standpoint, okay; and I made sure to give credit where it was due. But deep down, I largely dislike it.

Reporting back in: After taking a short hiatus from Black Flag (AKA progressing in Odyssey), I went back to it on Saturday and finished it Sunday night. I have a number of points I intend to expound upon. As with AC3, I'll provide the abbreviated version. Overall, I'm fond of Black Flag, certainly more than 3. Disappointingly, it did not hold up as well in the second half story-wise as it did for me in the first half. The first half had a good balance of political/Templar intrigue and Assassins with pirating. The second half of the game, surprisingly, put a greater emphasis on pirating. I expected that if the ratio of content found in the beginning of the game didn't stay fixed, it would change in the opposite direction. Hypothetically, I'd be okay with either of those possibilities. I wasn't happy that so much time was wasted on Blackbeard and other minutia at the expense of exploring Rogers and Torres. Torres was the essentially the least interesting antagonist in the game or close to it. Stopping him at the end felt very meh... no real emotional payoff. The writing in the second half was also choppy and confusing at points with a lot of manufactured drama: Mary's pregnant and dies....oh, okay? Mary needed way more screentime and I would've gladly seen Blackbeard and other characters phased out in favor of her. A couple of other story-related criticisms: 1. Edward's induction into the Brotherhood would've been better done in a formal way on Tulum. This could've taken place in the mid-late game after Mary's arc with Kenway culminates. Either she doesn't die at all or does so in a different manner.
2. Edward's daughter appearing at the end and the voyage back to England was a nice touch, but it didn't really resonate with me as much as it seems to have with many. The Caroline plot could've used another episode/reminder or two later in the game to keep it on the player's mind. Edward was likeable and his character progression over the course of the game was appreciated, as was Adewale's. Content was threadbare in the late game, and I burned out with it. Southern map-space was lacking. I completed a large amount of the interesting missions by the mid-game, which hurt my immersion and enjoyment later on, as I was largely steamrolling through the choppy, episodic sequences without enough enjoyable filler. Final Rating: ~7/10. Oh, and coming out of the Animus for the last time in the modern day startled me for sure... I'm fine with the minimalist modern day in this one. I didn't care for it in 3 due to it dragging on too long.
Edit: More on AC3's modern day and contextualizing my thoughts - I was a fan of the Abstergo infiltration mission where you fight your way through their HQ. The assassination at the end was great.
The other two levels of the modern day (the ones before the final sequence) I could've went without. The climbing one was fine, but not more than an uninteresting intermission to me. The stadium level was my least favorite.
As far as the final sequence goes, I found it to be bizarre. I'm back to exploring the Ezio trilogy right now, so it's possible I'll become amenable to the Isu plotline as I learn more about it. If I do change my mind, the modern day "dragging on too long" will be less of a criticism, since the issue lies in that fact that it's a long chain of sequences that I tended to dislike, more than the length itself innately being an issue.

And suddenly we will be discovered and some sort of a set-piece action event will take place. Because nobody is that stupid. Wait, are we doing it for real? Oh, we are doing it for real..."

I have not played the main game for a very long time, I have dipped back in to sail around and sink stuff but that is about it and my memory is not great at the best of times. I have mainly avoided playing again due to the grind for resources early on and the stupid follow the person and listen sub quests to name a few things but I really should play it again. So many other games I have not played though in my library.

Coming back again: I didn't mention in my previous post that I started Rogue immediately after Black Flag and, by the time of making that post, nearly finished the main quest. I didn't want to submit a giant block of text, and I figured I'd wait until I finished the main quest today to write about it. I read up on Rogue a decent amount before jumping into it. Reception was mixed, with some praising it as a subversive story with an interesting protagonist; others said it was a poorly written cash grab. I was hopeful that the former was true, and that it would prove an interesting rival to Black Flag in a new setting, also having many of the same gameplay mechanics but improved. Having finished the game's main quest and dabbled with a fair amount of the side content, I can say those hopes were thoroughly dashed. This game's writing is just....so bad. Being generous, the story is a 3/10. Shay's actions and motivations are forced to contrive conflict, he has no meaningful backstory, and his dialogue is...questionable. The Colonial Brotherhood are strange and cartoonish antagonists. As a matter of fact, I find the entire game to be....strange...in general. It feels like I'm playing a PS2 game or something, from the paradoxically drab-but-vibrant color palette, to the abundance of tools (which I'm not necessarily complaining about), to the extremely short story with one-dimensional characters, to the bizarre River Valley map with corridors that lead to a bunch of larger, disparate areas. It's all so videogame-y. The only good thing about the main questline was seeing more of Haytham and a moment that made me chuckle in the modern day: Osto Berg's files: Inspiration - Al-Mualim..."...I don't think you were supposed to see that" The story was short. I clocked in somewhere between 7-8 hours of playtime when I beat it. However, I went right through the story and only did a small amount of side content unlike with Black Flag. That's a contributing factor, but still, the story was indeed quite short regardless, and severely underdeveloped. I think the game did a poor just of incentivizing exploration of the greater world. In Black Flag, due to there only being one major map and gameplay locks on feasibly traversing certain parts of the map, it made sense that side content was interspersed between major story episodes. Playing through the map simply isn't necessary in Rogue, and the three maps made it so one's attention was drawn all over the place during the course of the story, and in ways that weren't even in proximity to many of the areas on the maps. The North Atlantic was boring to explore. Shipfaring lost much of it's charm here for me: not as atmospheric as in Black Flag and felt derivative due to the gripes I brought up about the map design. I cleared out all of the Gang HQs after completing the story, which has been the best aspect of the game in my opinion. Sadly, you can clear them all out pretty quickly. Rogue replaces assassination contracts on NPCS with assassination interceptions. I prefer contracts. Interceptions impose a time limit which stifles your creativity with stealth, and you're mostly just walking around killing defenseless randos instead of finding a way to turn a certain environment to your advantage. Hateful rant over. This is my least favorite of the Kenway saga, and my least favorite AC game yet. I didn't care for AC3 in many regards, but its relative strengths easily make it more worthy than Rogue in my eyes. If I had to rate: ~4/10
Edit: I'll move it's rating up to 5/10. I'm not sure I could, in good faith, give it a sub-par score, thanks to its redeeming qualities (namely various elements of gameplay). Perhaps if I were doing a series-centric rating system, placing 5/10 based on where I think the "average" AC game/the most mediocre game(s) in the franchise is, Rogue falling below that mark might be reasonable; but I'm attempting to rate the games in a general sense.

If I had to rate: ~4/10 Did you play AC3, the best part of Rogue for me was it gave some interesting information about AC3 characters and that it is a direct segway into Unity.

Coming back again: I didn't mention in my previous post that I started Rogue immediately after Black Flag and, by the time of making that post, nearly finished the main quest. I didn't want to make a giant block post, and I figured I'd wait until I finished the main quest today to post about it. The only good thing about the main questline was seeing more of Haytham and a moment that made me chuckle in the modern day: Otto Berg's files: Inspiration - Al-Mualim..."...I don't think you were supposed to see that" . The story was short. I did a short write-up on it earlier in this thread and mentioned it again in that block of text about Rogue. Getting more Haytham was the major highlight for me.

I didn't care about him in 3. His ending in Rogue was fitting. His behavior throughout the game was odd, though (including what's implied by the gangs' and other assassins' doings).
I think I'll lower my rating of AC3 to ~5.5/10. The lack of replayability and incredibly poor stealth weigh heavily on it.

We'll see where they go with it... That's an unfortunate launch window though. That's right about when I expect the next Dragon Age. But, who knows? Someone will have to delay for a February/March launch.
Place your bets.

I loved AC3 it was the first AC Game I ever played and I loved the story, the setting and I am one of the few that actually liked Connor. I replayed it at least 3 times, so replay ability was not an issue for me, I was honestly happy just roaming the wilderness areas, climbing and hunting. Stealth was new to me and I had no problem with it TBH, some of the other mechanics were pretty crap though and I am not a fan of QTE's but did them enough to know them off by heart. Black Flag and Odyssey though are my all-time favourites.

I thought Connor was decent, if the least intriguing Kenway. I think people exaggerate his flaws.

Discovered this a few minutes ago. It's easy to miss much of this dialogue if you complete Haytham's fight too quickly. That makes his sendoff significantly better. Ubisoft shouldn't have designed this mission the way they did.
