I'm pretty sure anyone remotely interested in the romance department is thirsty for at least one character. Dr. Lexi anyone? I will fight Drack to the death over her. Sure, he'll turn me into paste, but she will know of my love before I die. Hmm, that's depressing. Anyways, I get the thirst people have even if the characters we are looking forward to are different. I'm hoping for Dr. Lexi to be one of the nonsexual romances. I really like what we know about her character so far. I must admit I don't really get why this has to be specified. I'm not asexual but I'd still very much like my romance options to revolve around...romance. Emotional support, encouragement of passions, sharing of tragedies and triumphs, TONS of cuddling and old fashioned twee gestures. If I want porn I'll just watch porn, not a badly animated video game cutscene. It should be left up to the player whether sex occurs or not, unless it's specifically important to that romance plot like with Bull.

I can't tell if he's professing his undying commitment to that character or bitching that he's the only option. Pretty sure a member of BW isnt gonna be bitching about the game on social media. Also idk why people are hyped by this, it changes literally nothing. We already knew there was a m/m romance option. This doesnt say anything about him being in the squad which is what people seemed upset about. Ah, ok. I thought he might've been a hands on reviewer or something.

Ben Gelinas @bengelinas Started a new dude Ryder and was all "I'm gonna romance someone new." Then [redacted] said hi and I was like nope, this guy again. Only him. I can't tell if he's professing his undying commitment to that character or bitching that he's the only option.

Maybe on the website, but the romance's thread on the forum is having a different reaction to it. I think that says more about the type of people who frequent Obsidians forums than anything. I tend to avoid their forums because they seem to be home to a more hardcore and elitist crowd than, say, the BSN. I really enjoyed the first pillars of eternity, and the lack of romances didn't affect my enjoyment of the game at all, but I still think the new relationship system will add a lot to the second game and am looking forward to it. I almost got the impression on there/on the codex during POE1 when romances came up that the people against it were largely just trying to project some sort of image. And those in favour felt the need to justify themselves with essays on why romance in games can be a good thing. Just let me suck Eder's dick and have him take me on a romantic picnic, because I'd fuckin' enjoy that. Which is the purpose of video games.

@neilpollner wrote Gil. I think I can say...... Anyone got an idea what he's written for Bioware in the past?

All I saw was positivity and a rapid boost in pledges? Maybe on the website, but the romance's thread on the forum is having a different reaction to it. But doesn't the supposed holy grail of RPG's, most holy Baldurs Gate 2, have romances? Back when Pillars was in production I recall almost every update on the forums being met with 'this isn't like Baldurs Gate 2 though!' or some variation thereof.

Pillars of Eternity 2 will have romances, but they're passing it off as some kind of advanced relationship system to slip it under the radar of RPG Codexer types. Apparently it's working.

I guess meaningful content is different for different people, but I'd take Macready's "The day that you told me you loved me was the happiest day of my life" over the bulk of the Dorian romance. Exactly, my thoughts! No matter how many cutscenes I've got with Dorian, his lack of ability to express his feelings and the fact that he's constantly trying to hide them behind his snark was something that always left me disappointed and frustrated after every. single. interaction. with him. One simple line from Macready made me happier than entire Dorian's romance arc. BTW it's weird that Gaider, gay himself, decided to make the most important and personal character for him... a stereotype. I've noticed that, as a modern young homo, a lot of older gay guys I've interacted with tend to have a much larger fixation on gay culture/gay rights and kind of sticking to stereotypes almost as a point of pride. Which makes sense, I suppose, and may have contributed to the...dated representation we got with Dorian.

Isn't "chav" a bit like saying "white trash"? I don't think it's a cool term to use. I think Sera's accent feels fake and her lingo is like... written by someone who THINKS this is what a "street smart sassy British gal" sounds like that. I think her writing is heavy-handed; she says "The little people" approximately 100 times and her personality remains fairly flat for me - there are no nuances there, no twist in the story, no growth for the character. I think she had GREAT potential, and I find her design really cute, and her voice actor does her very best. But what's faltering here is the writer, sadly. As it's referring to a set of negative personality traits as opposed to, say, just an insult to working class English people (which I am), no. I'm not required to be PC to shitty people.

Lukas wrote (the incredibly overrated and one note) Minsc, Carver and easily the worst Bioware companion ever in Sera. My already fairly low interest in Liam just dropped considerably. The last time he wrote an English character, he thought it'd be cute to make her an ignorant northern chav. I'm from Lancashire. I don't need a fantasy version of Tracy the immigrant hater from Sociology class. That said, I adore Aveline, so who knows! I liked Sera tho, even tho she got on my nerves at times. But yeah, she's marmite, lots here don't care for her. Feel like such a hipster for liking her. *adjusts glasses* Are you English? I feel like maybe non-English folks find chavs novel or something and that's how she came about. Whereas I've had to put up with Sera's frequently in real life.

Well Fenders is most popular DA2 ship and Cassarric has it's fans so.. hate based ships are pretty popular within the fandom ^^; I have read some Fenders fan fictions and they are too... kinky for me. I notice similar trend about "hate ships" as well in other fandom I'm in. I romanced Danse (and edited him to make him look Bara as fuck ;D ) but stopped playing when I realised that I'd apparently done most of the main story and that hardly anything of interest had happened. And then I thought the final DLC might make up for it with a strong post game story expansion and then it was just a story-lite raider roleplay. You can make the best open world sandbox ever but if the story is shit I just can't get invested. I hated that Danse spent most of the time in his power armor. And when I took his PA off, he looked so disgustingly deformed lol. It took a few mods to make him look good. What I love about Danse romance though is when he said "Ad Victoriam" after you sleep with him. MacCready is also my favorite. Best believe I invested a good five hours getting his power armour off and giving him my ex-boyfriends a perfect, beastly muscle/chub cuddly frame. Honestly, I get the argument about respecting the companions/squaddies iconic looks but at the same time...it's the players individual game. You can edit Shepard but Sheploo is no less iconic and still exists through all promotional material. Giving the option to tweak romance interests means that people can just choose whoever they find the most appealing on a narrative level and tweak their looks to their taste, ultimately satisfying a far larger audience. I'd be so much more interested in a Kaidanmance playthrough if I could just edit him to have sweet, dopey eyes, a beard and a stocky frame.

DA2 isn't one of my favourites (Arcanum, guuurl) but I think it deserved way more respect than it got. The Hawke siblings aside, I think it had the strongest cast of companions of any Bioware game so far, the story was bold and unique, the concept of staying in one evolving city over time was really intriguing and just needed a stronger execution, the DLC was all really strong and attentive to the complaints about the base game... I thought it was really good. It just wasn't done baking. Also fuck human only protagonist in a fantasy game. Despite me wanting bigger and bigger games with more and more content, one of the things I particularly liked about it was how tight it was. And that's weird considering ME1 is my favourite ME game because it felt more vast, and considering I'm really looking forward to MEA for the same reason. Despite its polish, and despite me liking it a lot, DAI was the weakest for me because it lacked the tightness driving me on from A-B. Some people don't need that, and I don't when I'm playing Skyrim, but in a BW game with a focus on story, too many huge expanses filled with nothing and with no story leaves me feeling empty. DA2 just had that tight structure that took me from one thing to the next, and idk, captured something that I really found enjoyable, and it made it easy to keep replaying without thinking "aw man, I've got to go through the Hinterlands again" or "ugh, The Deep Roads." DAO is still magnificent, and everything during and after the Landsmeet is some excellent shit - but getting to that point takes it out of me after a while. Maybe I'm getting old lol. I think when I was in my teens I used to like an RPG to be as big as possible, but I'm finding that as I get older and have more real life shit to do that I much prefer a tight story. The most important things in an RPG for me are that I get to create my own character and their background, sidequests that feel relevant to the larger plots and that I don't have to do mental roleplay gymnastics to justify my character taking time to do, an expanse of dialogue options, choice and consequence and cool companions who REACT to those differing dialogue options and character choices. I don't give a shit about being able to make a pot of stew, or doing Nordic dungeon #30, In fact, one of the most reassuring things to come out of the previews was that somebody said the rewards for doing sidequests in ME:A are largely narrative rewards.

I asked a couple of devs who's writing Gil, but I didn't get an answer. I sent a tweet today to Neil Pollner, asking him if he's writing Gil. My theory is that nearly every writer wrote 1 squadmate and at least 1 major NPC. And we don't know who else Pollner is writing, and I don't think Liam's writer has a twitter account. It's possibru. Jo Berry is writing Cora, don't know who else tho. Jaal's writer doesn't have a twitter account. Lukas is writing Liam yeah? I am encouraged by the fact that they got a (relatively) high profile actor for him. Will they manage to make him seem as involved as the Squaddies, however? HMM. DA:I got friggin Gwendoline Christie (Brienne) and she voiced... this thing: ...Hva? THAT'S who she voiced? I'd heard she'd been cast before playing and didn't manage to identify her throughout the entire game, obviously assuming she'd have a fairly significant role. Why the hell would they bother getting her for that? Hu-mans are weird.

In b4 there's a lot of gay content and I have to choose between Blackwall's honor or a nice amount of new gay content. I'm... I'm sorry Blackwall, I have to let you go JUST FOR A MINUTE! I mean, you will never love me and these guys will ;; I'd literally love a Blackwall esque storyline for Gil, because at least its a story line. But enough with my fantasies, i'll cherish the four unique lines of dialogue and 12 second fade to black cut scene we're gifted with. I am encouraged by the fact that they got a (relatively) high profile actor for him. Will they manage to make him seem as involved as the Squaddies, however? HMM.

Everytime I see a dev say it has to fit their personality I realize that I must not be gay. I wear teeshirts most of the time for god sakes...there's not a fashionable bone in my body. I'm not gay. I can't be. It doesn't fit my character. That just Doesn't Make Sense TM. Do you think you might be doing it wrong?

Honestly, this is why I'm frustrated. I'll be a little annoyed if gay guys only get NPCs. But if they are good options, then I'll be less concerned. It's nice to be able to bring your LI with you on missions, but it's not the end of the world if they can't join you. And I came into this process fully expecting that gay guys would get the least options and it's looking likely. So that's not making me any more annoyed that any other Bioware game. I'm annoyed with how it's being handled. First it's "We aren't talking about romances." Then it's "Prettygoodbanging". Then it's "Pee Bee and Jaal are LI's". Then it's "here's Cora and Scott". And, throughout all of this, it's "Sorry, no can say" specifically to questions about m/m content. A user with a male name asking about Jaal as a romance option is not the same as asking if Jaal is available to Scott. The former gets acknowledged (but could very easily be in reference to Sara), the latter gets shut down. It feels like that whole "Well Shepard can't be gay. And asari aren't females, so she can't be lesbian either. Well, okay, she can be lesbian, but not a gay guy, sorry. Oh, okay, fine, here's a little m/m content for you in the final game." thing. ^This But don't forget about the 'sexuality has to fit/make sense/be a big part of who they are/ or else we have to rethink the character'- thing. Which is why I will still be frustrated about the no bi or gay male squadmate thing if it does come to pass. Because when your argument or at least the implication of your argument basically boils down to: gay/bi males don't make sense as squadmates, it's more than a little problematic for me. Oh, they make sense! But only when they're sassy and flamboyant and have sick fashion sense! Have you never met one of the gays?
