The downward facing canopy is sort of a throwback to some other vehicles in the previous games.   But I think the downward facing wings suits the design better. Plus, with the ship technically being a VTOL, that downward facing canopy is rather nice to have. |

Well, this does take place in space. So "up" would be based on your perspective anyway.
But I think it looks fine. If it was originally designed the other way, it would still be kinda cool.
