I don't really buy the argument. But I did try out DA2 because of all the hate I read about it on the old BSN. Turned out liking it. Not loving it, but it was entertaining. In a lot of ways, I ended up liking it more than Origins. I thought all the characters were a trip and everyone kept me sufficiently entertained somehow. Plus I was a big fan of the Arishok pretty early on. Haven't really seen a nemesis in these games that I liked as much as him.

You probably put more thought into that than I put into my college thesis.

Nah... it's an anti-EA, anti-Bioware, anti-Mac crowd that are orchestrating the hate. It's a hate campaign that's been going on since even before ME3 was released... and it's just been snowballing ever since. Oh ratssss you have discovered us. We meet weekly to discuss how we can bring down Bioware, EA and Mr Walters. We spend thousands of dollars to counter the thousands of dollars EA spend on marketing, we flood Internet boards world wide just because we hate Bioware, EA and Mr Walters soooo much. None of us are sure why we hate them so much but our campaign will NOT fail ... wait is that a black Helo flying over my house? ... Or just maybe instead of there being some kind of strange "hate campaign" going on, there are actually a lot of people who just think this game is not very good and are just voicing their opinions. But NOOOOO that can't be because you like the game so it can't be that this many people don't agree with you it has to be some kind of "hate campaign." Yep those are black helos flying over my house

So, I get what you are saying and you make a good point about controversy having the potential to increase sales. However, as someone else stated already, the type of controversy matters. Grand Theft Auto is notorious for stirring up controversy, be it with over-the-top violence, sexual content, etc. These things get in the news, people blame the game for school shootings and increased teenage sexual activity, etc, and so then normal gamers say "Oh man! I have to check this out!" and thus sales increase.
Increasing sales with controversy about bad graphics, glitches, and lackluster story will not sell additional copies. That's just not how marketing works, really. It's an interesting thought you have, and you put it together very well, so kudos on that, but I just can't buy the premise.

Everybody's going insane in 2017 apparently. 2016 was when the Matrix went live, and it's still as buggy as shit. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I mean, this year can't possibly be real. It's as silly as glass frogs being an actual animal that exists.

My theory is that the game just isn't good and people complain about that. Life is really simple sometimes.

Ye, not really, think about it. Few days from release, Mac Walters was already talking about MEA players in the millions (as in plural, as in more than 1Million), then EA comes out to say their predictions for first month of sales is 3Million copies (and thats not a number they just threw out there, it was a prediction based off the pre-order and first days sales). Now they are saying they are happy with how the game performed. So, while speculation and no evidence besides word of mouth, it's safe to assume that after 2months from release MEA has sold 3Million copies. Witcher 3, sold something around 6Million copies (a bit more, but didnt reach 7), which is a killer number! Outstanding. (oh and btw i'm not counting DLCs ofc, MEA is not there yet, so lets compare only the base game) But Witcher 3 costed 80Million, which is double than MEA cost. So if MEA sells half the numbers of Witcher, it performed just as well. EA can't lie about sales figures, so as of now we can take the 3 million figure as valid. The game's a success in that it has turned a profit. Whether it met their internal estimates we may never know. If it was moddable they would continue selling for several more years, but it's not so additional sales will probably come from the DLCs, and the Multiplayer Gambling Boxes. And a Game of the Year version in another year or so.
