So, I was watching MassEffectFollwer and Minius GC speculations of possible dlc a while back, and apparently that's a thing in sci-fi is that well if you don't see a body there probably still alive. I don't watch/play a lot of sci-fi so I don't have a lot of examples of this. I guess in ME2 Shepard came back from the dead, but I just don't know how common it is in sci-fi story telling. That being said, there are three people/groups we don't see bodies for: Alec, Garson, and the Jardann. I suppose technically you can count Ellen as well but we know she "alive "and accounted for. BioWare though will have to do a lot of explaining to do if we see Alec again. I mean, Cora and Liam were right next him surely they would have seen if he was still alive, but we don't see a body so I don't know. Garson, i'm 50/50 if she's still alive. The only reason why i'm 50/50 is that we get to "see" and hear her. I don't think BioWare would go through that trouble to not use her in a dlc or for future game. The Jardann, although I would love more info as dlc that story feels more appropriate as a sequel then a 2-5 hour dlc.

I'm pretty sure Jien Garson's body was "shown" in Nexus Uprising. As for the Jardaan, we have no information on them as to whether they are dead or alive. All we know is that they aren't around. Their fate is unknown. Alec is the only one said to be dead with no body shown. I think it's odd that there's no memorial or anything at all to mark his passing. To me, that's odd. Sure, it may just be a flaw in the writing, or something they opted to cut out for time reasons, but it's strange.

This is true in pretty much any kind of writing or visual art. From Moriarty to Batman.

It's a general truism for a lot of genre fiction, of which sci-fi, fantasy and crime stories/thrillers are the most popular these days. Because they have a tendency to rely on twists and turns to keep the audience's attention, characters improbably returning from the dead is a very popular trick. However, it has been used so many times now that many fans have caught on to it, so if there's not at least a bloody corpse, people often spin theories. Also, authors may just not want to close certain doors for themselves. (This is not to say more highly regarded literature and art movies or artsy indie games never pull this stunt, but generally they tend to rely less on the 'aha, but I was alive all along hiding in the basement!' kind of plot twists, since they can sometimes be a bit hoakey.) The Jardaan are definitely coming back, I think, at least in some form, if/when the game gets a sequel. We've only just scratched the surface of their story. Of the seven in the Ai leadership that were before "Number Eight", Tann, we might also not truly have lost everyone yet. Alec is more difficult, but as mentioned above by dmc1001 , not impossible. However, I don't really see that he's necessary to the plot anymore, which is really my main reason I think we won't get him back, unless they involve him deeper in that Benefactor business or set up something else for him connected to the reason he faked his death.

I think part of the problem re: Alec is how everyone looks/sounds afterwards. Rather than looking grief-stricken or sad, they look suspicious, like they are hiding something. I get that refusing to meet someone's eyes can be for several reasons, but in my first run through the prologue, what I saw was people avoiding the truth rather than discomfort due to grief. Then I thought it was weird that SAM would "go along with the lie," if it was, in fact, a lie. But we see later on that things can be hidden from SAM just like they can be from other people. So, yeah, still up in the air as far as I'm concerned.
Haven't read Nexus Uprising yet so can't comment on that, but I'm pretty sure Garson is dead based on what we find in her room. I think SAM would have noticed if someone else's DNA was all over the bed.

Meh, that's not a sci-fi thing, that's a fandom thing. People do it in Dragon Age as well with characters like Duncan, enough that David Gaider had to confirm that, yes, he was dead, and no, he's never coming back.
As for its use in storytelling, especially in serialized format, it is a useful tool for creators to use in case they want to bring the person back for whatever reason. They're leaving their options open, as it were. But sometimes fans get carried away with it, defying logic just for their own wish fulfillment.

IF Alec is still alive (which I don't believe) he sure picked a hell of a time to fake his death. From the little we learn of the guy it doesn't sound like something he would have done, at least at that moment. He did seem to take the pathfinder role very seriously and there were 20k people counting on him.

I don't see how Alec could be alive. I mean, the Hyperion crew picked you both up. It's not like he just disappeared or something. For Garson, well, we'll see.
