So taking a break from my examination of ME Andromeda in the things it did well and the things that it did not do well to talk to a subject which is very near and dear to my heart. Namely Roleplay. And since MEA is a Roleplaying game it gives a lot of opprotunity for people to do ings with their character. Those little moments that help fill in a blank and turn a cardbord cutout, into a flesh and blood avatar with feelings.
Now this thread is not the place to complain about the lack of roleplay by Ryder. There are something like three of them throughout the boards.
Instead What little moments make up your Ryders journey to proving themselves a capable Pathfinder? What spins did you add to the character via headcanon? Simply put, I guess, who is your Ryder and why did they do what they did?
Cassandra Ryder: I played her as sort of an idealistic scientist with a heart of gold. She wore her heart on her sleave and reacted to a lot of situations with humor and cutting sarcasm. She was more or less 'daddy's little girl', who relied on him for a lot...so...having Alec die early in the adventure really hurt her and left her adrift. Forcing her to come into her own, and putting her ideals to the test. (Especially on Kadara).
Big RP Moment: During the mission with the Turian Arc making Avitus Pathfinder was a big moment for her. When she accepted her position and her role of pathfinder. Since she was really a fish out of water for the whole thing she didn't think she was up to it, until she encouraged Avitus to take up the mantle for the Turians, she realized that she had been doing a good enough job. Though, then she messed up on Kadara by not procuring the Oblivion cure...oops. So she was still quite fallible and this almost jaded her. But at the end of the day she came through.
Robert Ryder: Wanted to follow in his father's footsteps, but not out of personal alliegance or love of the man, but more because of their constant distance and competitive streak. He got into the Special Forces and wanted to follow his father's career path because he had a chip on his shoulder, and wanted his father to see him succeed and even outpace them. Got a scar from a sparring session, and the only reason he was in Andromeda was because his father went. Is more practically minded then his sister, preffering logic and professionalism when out in the field, yet still has a sense of humor. Especially mocking anyone he feels is bull shitting him or being especially arrogant.
Big RP Moment: (So far). Meeting Sloan Kelly. Now he is usually professional and quite reasonable but he went out of his way to press her buttons. Why? Because he was trying to test her and show her what he could do. He was making a point. This cool, collected man, intentionally acted like a hothead so he could guage her response. He knew he was in litte danger because of his shields and knew that Kelly was in little danger for much the same, so she shouldn't overreact. He was just testing her, and her guards. Plus he did not want to share information with a potential enemy.

I haven't entirely settled on a canon version. I'll just discuss what I've done so far. First two PTs, Scott was very much the casual/emotional type. Also very close to his entire family, sad that Alec died and worried that Sara was in a coma. I have to admit I like this style a lot. There's just something about a Ryder who can be flippant in the face of danger that I find really appealing. With this in mind, he's been extra flirty. First PT I did a romance with Gil and a fling with Reyes. Second PT I romanced Gil and had flings with Reyes, Avela, Peebee and Keri. Keri's was a turnoff for me (I made a thread about it) so that one won't happen again. Avela was boring so that won't happen again. Peebee would be more of a romance, IMO, so I probably would never have a fling with her. I like Gil but it's not what I'm looking for. End analysis is that Reyes suits me best for canon romance. Also, and this is probably obvious, but I'm a Reyes over Sloane kind of guy. Generally choose Raeka over the krogan scouts, convince Avitus to become a pathfinder and give the drive core to Morda. The Moshae is usually the ambassador, but that's largely because it's a temporary position.
Third PT, I went more professional/logical. It's not too bad. This version showed detached concern for Sara but was unemotional when it came to Alec's death. He wasn't around much while growing up so didn't have a strong attachment to him. He had been broken up about his mother's death. And, in all honesty, he was a little surprised in uncovering Alec's memories and finding out how me he really cared about his kids. It's just not something that showed through while growing up. My initial intent was to romance Cora but I don't think I'll go through with it. Don't know if I'll pursue Gil exclusively or if I should just hold out for Reyes. This Ryder is very standoffish to Addison, given her attitude toward him at the start. Refused to shake her hand after founding Podromos and made it clear I thought she was just as untrustworthy as all the other politicians. It's probably an attitude I'll stick with in the future because she has a poor attitude and shouldn't be under the impression that she can just be that way and have no consequences. This PT isn't complete so I'm not sure how it will all turn out.

So far my pathfinders are non-biotics, that stick to the combat and tech trees. Also, unless absolutely necessary, I try to stay within the Geneva Conventions, so no burning people alive with Incinerate or Flame Thrower. I do taze though (Overload) but no one ever surrenders

Like the commander of the resistance on voeld who was like the stars will turn cold if you betray us. And he was 'oh we don't want that' Taking the example with Sloan he intentionally tries and pisses people off intentionally.

You are a better person than I. From the moment I saw Flamethrower in one of the demo vids, I couldn't wait to use it! It's one of my go-to powers most of the time, especially vs critters (eirochs/fiends) and armored enemies (behemoth krogan).
I've spec'd in a lot of biotic powers for the profile ranks but have yet to use any of them. I also can't seem to find a reason to NOT use Infiltrator profile all the time. It's just way too useful.
My last Scott was casual/emotional, so I nicknamed him Mr. Sensitive since he romanced Cora. This time around he's (so far) more logical and distant from everyone, and has his sights set on Gil.

Besides the combat tree, which diversity in roleplay? MEA is a story driven shooter, the RPG is totally thrown/gutted out. The only choice I saw was you can let Calinda live or die, let Salarian pathfinder live or die or choose a younger pathfinder over an older experienced one. None have any consequences to speak of.

Kept all canon names so i dont get called Ryder so much (Shepard was fine with me because of the military setting, but MEA is intransigeant im a ''teenager'')
Playing SARA 1 as a professional-emotional scientist-operative type. So I minimize the combat (I use cloaking to get in and out of remnant sites) and do most of the scanning-type tasks and little of the 'clear 12 outposts for datapads' tasks. She saw the Initiative as a way to reconnect with her dad after her mom's passing. She's benevolent and trustful but result oriented. Got close to Liam at the beginning cause she felt alone with Dad dead and Bro in coma, but she went for Jaal and the whole 'meeting of 2 races' arc. (In ME fashion, I try to play her as as 'paragade')
SARA 2 is a casual-logic explorer-sentinel type. She will explode stuff and use snark to deal with the pressure of the pathfinder business. She wasnt close to her dad and doesnt have much to look back for, so she can be upset 'she always has to be the hero' and deal with everyone's problems but she doesnt really have anything else worth doing. Im not sure if she will endup with Liam or Peebee, ill just go with the flow when i get there. (She's my hothead 'renegon')
Playing SCOTT 1 as the classic paragon vanguard-hero with heavy casual-emotional nonesense. Life is good when you can do no wrong. He's finally having the adventure of a lifetime he wanted when leaving the Milky Way, following Dad's legacy and making things right for when Sis wakes up etc etc . He'll have a nice time with Peebee and/or Keri but will get serious with Vetra.
SCOTT 2 is my attempt at renegade with a professional-logic type sentinel, cautious with some of the casual snark to taunt those in his way. He's very pro-Initiative and was all in for 'no military' until the Ketts showed up... so about 15mins into the game. I want him to be pissed as learning the nonesense his Dad got into (mom frozen in the basement) through the memory fragments but Im not sure if the game will let me. He's gonna hook up with Reyes, in some love/untrust steamy relationship.
So far, Im having a hard time getting done with the Angara planets again to begin with.. we'll see how far I can get with this game.

I didn't have to really change much since Ryder is a lot like I am as far as telling bad jokes and making lite of serious topics. I don't remember who we are talking to (Vetra maybe) but one of the responses is a joking one which the person you are talking to says something like "Really? Even at a time like now you still can't help but tell a joke? The reply was an attempt to not be a joker but that quickly fades and Ryder admits she can't stop with the jokes. Reminded me of the Joker Hawke and Varric joking at all the wrong moments, even got called out for it once I think by the grand cleric. Reminds me of when I was a kid.

Well, there is the fate of the Krogan on New Tuchanka and the Exiles on Kadara. The Pathfinder can either end up bringing the Initiative back together, or splitting it apart.

Instead What little moments make up your Ryders journey to proving themselves a capable Pathfinder? Heh, I was actually playing Scott as someone who wasn't a particularly capable pathfinder. He struck me as being too green for the role, so I ran with that and had him make his decisions based on emotion and instinct rather than intellect. I thought it worked well with the casual dialogue options and some of the messiness in the side plots. He regularly insulted people (sometimes unintentionally, but still) and generally made poor decisions. Things still usually worked out though, so I imagine that he's basking in some undeserved praise while the more competent characters are muttering under their breaths at him.

I normally start the games with a fairly good idea what my protagonist is like based on what I gathered (without spoilers) on its background. Sometimes it bites me in the behind. Andromeda actually proved pretty accommodating.
The biggest difference between my two Ryders conceptually at the start was the attitude towards Angara, Exiles/Krogan and the Initiative. I tacked on some extra stuff as I went, romances and friendships to fit that basic concept.
Tishujen Ryder was by the book, virtuous professional that was taught all the right things, so she was dedicated to the Initiative and extremely trusty of Angara. On the other hand, she detested the Exiles and Krogan. Her VA did not quite always fit, but she is also young, so voice is not the most important thing.
By contrast, my second Ryder, Vasco Ryder, was a scoundrel by nature, who never trusted anyone, and Angara least of all. His voice was perfect.
I thought that it would be purely headcanon, but the more I played my second Ryder, the clearer I saw just how well the game accommodated my two concepts.
They differed both in the way they went through the story of the game.
Tishujen meticulously rejuvenating every planet that was Angara-related, including Kadara, but ignoring Eladeen. She returned to Eos often, because it was her project. She was absolutely fascinated with Jaal and despite my screaming in pain, romanced him and only him till they got committed, because she was simply destined to meet a boy from another Galaxy.
Vasco bounds off the different planets, and wants the Angara to freeze their asses off on Voeld. He is most comfortable on Eladeen and Kadara, and he runs away from Kadara to some other end of the Helius Cluster to do anything every time his relationship advances with Reyes.
In terms of essential RP moment that imo defined both of my protagonists, I’d say that:
Tishujen: ‘twas something I actually have reloaded, b/c I did not know that it did not break the romance at the time (it looked as if it did). She shot Akksul the moment he pulled the gun on Jaal. No emotions, just a clear shot to the head. There was nothing for it.
Vasco: He moved the twitching body of some Angara idiot aside with his boot and integrated the ancient AI with SAM. AI really appealed to him, and he wanted it.

I do taze though (Overload) but no one ever surrenders You know, this is a good point. I've always tried to stay away from the more brutal combat tactics, even modding out Jacob's incendiary ammo in ME2 since it otherwise gets automatically activated. (Though I do sometimes use those sorts of things against non-sentient machines like the mechs in ME2 or the remnant bots in MEA - I'm assuming that they are not conscious, do not feel pain, and are incapable of surrendering.) But does it seem odd only to me that humans seem to have *fewer* rules for the conduct of ground combat in the future than they do in the present day? It does lock you out of some of the skill trees if you try to adhere to that.

Let's see. I only have one playthrough so far, so nothing is really canon yet. But I have a pretty good picture of Sara in my head though.
Growing up on the Citadel, the twins had a fairly peaceful upbringing. Sara was apparently really into archaeology and the Protheans...was probably something of a Liara T'Soni fangirl from what I can tell (Sara mentions debating Liara's work with her friends). Sara was driven, and the twins had a bright future ahead of them, until Ellen got sick and Alec got involved in illegal A.I. research. Suddenly doors started closing everywhere for her and Scott, and Alec was never around, as Ellen got worse--causing Scott to become bitter toward Alec, while Sara threw herself into her studies. But Sara tried to have hope. The peacekeeping mission on the Prothean dig site was a big deal for her, but she knew she wanted to go to Andromeda.
Sara is diplomatic meeting the Angara, she also chooses the science base, and even tried to reason with the Kett (though that doesn't work out obviously).
Sara is mostly logical/professional, but not cynical...she's curious, with a passion for science and discovery, so I had lots of emotional dialogue in there as well. This is also her major character flaw, since she will probably trust the wrong person (or wrong technology) at some point. Major turning point was when she let SAM stop her heart. She's already fully on her way down that slippery slope, later risking her life trying to interface directly with remnant.
Alec and Scott used to tease Sara for always wanting to be first, and always looking for the tallest mountain to climb. Will that be her downfall one day? Probably but for now she's just enjoying having discovered Meridian and getting the vaults online.
Jaal and Peebee were fast friends, both sharing her passions, but she also enjoyed stealing a night away with Reyes, where she could just be herself, and he enjoys her stories about adventure and hunting for ancient treasure.

There's what to do about making a deal with Clan Nakmor and whether to side with Sloane Kelly or Reyes Vidal, plus all the choices that shape Ryder's personality. The consequences aren't huge, but they never really have been in Mass Effect games. How many of Shepard's choices in ME1 affect the outcome of the Battle of the Citadel?

From dropping asteroids to the genophage to fire v ammo and even poison rounds. Though that does bring up a good point with role play...my Shepards in. Me1 refused to use polonium rounds while the other had no problem with it.

It does lock you out of some of the skill trees if you try to adhere to that. it's an interesting point but in general the council does not seem to have a version of the Geneva conventions since all of them.use pretty brutal tactics in warfare. From dropping asteroids to the genophage to fire v ammo and even poison rounds. Though that does bring up a good point with role play...my Shepards in. Me1 refused to use polonium rounds while the other had no problem with it. Asteroid-drops and Polonium Rohnds are considered out-of-bounds by Council standards, but otherwise it is pretty brutal. I'd never given it much thought, to be honest. I appreciate Obadiah opening my eyes to an interesting situation. I think standards would develop in interesting ways with a civilization that has lasted for thousands of years. They sanction brutal infantry battles, maybe thinking that it's best to just get the killing done as quickly as possible? They disapprove of the extreme destruction of asteroid drops. (Not only would these cause catastrophic death tolls, but could render garden worlds uninhabitable.) Yet, they sanctioned genocide of the Rachnii and the genophage. (Or they at least allowed the genophage to happen with their tacit approval.) Its likely just a matter of accepting different norms in a reality in which some individuals can rip others apart on the molecular scale. You can't prevent it, so you try to limit it. I can only imagine how shocking it would be to finally discover living aliens, and then find out about advanced combat biotics, devastating genetic weapons, etc... It makes those early years, before Shepard, very interesting. I use Fire, Cryo and "Electrical" (Tech) Explosions regularly, myself, with my "Battle Engineer" (Sentinel--Incinerate/Assault Turret/Energy Drain). It's usually immediately lethal, since I've lit them up with a gun, as well. On the other side, I play a lot of Adepts. Lifting, twisting and hurling persons about is not much gentler. As to the OP, each sibling has definitely crystallized in my mind, after essentially two full PTs of each. Since I like to play an empathetic, but professional leader, I enjoy Scott's RP opportunities a bit more. Sara comes across as less confident, due to the provided dialogue, and I find it grating, at times. Scott, though, seems to immediately take up his burden with outward confidence. His answers generally display a cool, confident leader. I like Sara's love for science, and purse my mouth in dismay when Scott occasionally sounds less scientifically inclined. It's less often than I cringe at Sara's dorky awkwardness, though. I guess I try to RP them similarly: Confident, professional, capable, but always empathetic when appropriate. Being confident, and being a good leader, both include knowing when to be relaxed, and when to toe the line. Each individual is inspired in different ways, so you must become the leader each person needs. I think that this character is pretty easy to play in MEA. I've spent most of my adult life in leadership roles, and I like that the Pathfinder can lead the way I'd attempt to lead. While I think both VAs were excellent, I felt that Sara's goofiness and jokester side were laid on a bit too thickly. Scott (Tom) was a bit more level, and this makes me enjoy RPing him more. I feel like Scott immediately steps up and embraces the role, considering himself a "true Pathfinder" as soon as he learns of his "promotion". I think Sara probably gains confidence while on Eos. I'll have to pay attention the next time I play. Sara is again on deck for PT #5, but it may be a while. I'm itching for a return to HZD, DAI, or maybe a break from gaming, for a while.

Shepard you shaped into a personality. Ryder has no personality. So what, Nakmor clan and Reyes Vidal amount to nothing in consequence. This game isn't able to stir very much emotion in any direction which I find kind of sad. Once it was Bioware's greatest strength. The best part of this game I find in the side quests whom so many find tedious fetch quests while driving the mako around. Always preferred ME series but now my hope lies with DA. I enjoyed DAI very much so hope the next will be in the same vein and the formula will not change drastically from DAI. Can't wait for my Solas romance to continue.

Sara: professional in the streets, snarky between the sheets. (also I know this isn't how it happened, but I imagined her starting to childishly mock the Archon about halfway through the final fight even if he couldn't hear her. She was 100% done with his bullshit.) Her biggest regret is when she shot Akksul because she thought he was going to shoot Jaal. *Akksul pulls his gun on Jaal, Ryder blows him away immediately and then realizes* ....Kinetic barriers are a thing...shiiiit Also got pissed at everyone for acting like she only saved the Salarian pathfinder and didn't go to save the rest of the captured Salarians.

And granted you could define Shepards personality to a degree, but their dialogue wheel was all about defining their morality. There was no humorous option or angry options or diplomatic. Just paragon and renegade. Contrast that with Ryder where the only options are about their personality. Anyways finally nailed down why Robert tends to bristle around aggressive authority figures ...bullies. Because he probably thought his father was bullying him. Which the funny thing is he was doing nothing.of the kind. Just Robert has such a chipb on his shoulder that he perceived slights.

1st playthrough I chose responses that I personally would have chosen. 2nd playthrough I chose all logic and professional. 3rd playthrough I chose all casual and emotional. To be honest, I didn't feel much of any difference in the roleplay of them. No matter which playthrough, I was unable to play the seasoned adult I would have liked to play because the Ryder's are meant to be young newbs.
In comparison, in the OT my first playthrough were responses I would personally have chosen, 2nd playthrough the whole series as a paragon (with RP head-canon that she was the secret love child of Hackett and was raised by her mom on ships) 3rd playthrough, I played renegage (RP head-canon that she was a kid on the streets until Anderson fostered her and took her under his wing.) In those three playthroughs I got a wild variety in the RP experience of my game.
My conclusion is that the biggest beef I have with the replayability in this game is that the conversation wheel lacked enough diversity to give much of a difference in replaying it.
Edit to add: After we get the promised greater variety of CC, I will play a 4th and final canon playthrough of ME:A and try my hardest to get a more adult, seasoned character to see if that's even possible to RP in this game. I expect to be disappointed I'm afraid. It's just so hard to play a hardnose with the Wonder Twins with the conversations choices we have and that we have to forgive squad members that pull the things Liam and Peebee pulled behind your back. And that escape pod incident. I can just hear the ghost of Jarvik in my head threatening "airlock them" and my Ryder desperately wanting to agree with him.

My hard nose wasn't forgiving to Liam. And he won't be to Peebee.

Anyways Robert has been doing a lot of really aggressive things. Dropped Aroane down well and exiled spender. Which it was funny the only reason i did that was so he'd get killed by the krogan...or others...brutal man. Anyways just have viewed treating this as him taking the law into his own hands. He no longer trusts tann or nexus leadership to do the right thing because meridian.
