The game forces an attack on the Kett command center on Voeld early in the game, because the shield codes will change. I waited on my first playthrough and the opportunity was lost. Meaning I'm at a low level, using level 2 disciple and level 1 sniper with weak powers and almost no passives, and mediocre augments and mods, so it's a tough fight on insanity. No problem with that, it's part of the game.
But this is a very, very long mission with a weak character. And no matter how far I get into it, if I die, the game puts me all the way back to the beginning, outside the facility. Over and over and over. I like the game, but that is not part of the game, that is the developers trolling the player.

Why they chose not to allow players to save during those missions is incomprehensible to me.
Whether they intend to change it in a patch remains to be seen.

It really should allow manual saves everywhere, but I wonder if this is some kind of random thing, because my game will have that little blue circle appear at the bottom of the screen every time a stage of the mission is done, so if I end up getting knocked back, it will usually take me to the most recent point before that battle.

I agree that manual saves should be made available. This seems like an issue about which they'd dig in their heels, calling it a creative choice that they don't want to change. geezer117, was this a speed run? I've never hit that base before level 20, I'd estimate. It's not relevant to your complaint. I'm just curious.

Why cheat on Insanity? He could just turn it down to Hardcore or lower, before doing that. If the argument is "for the trophy", what's the point of a trophy acquired via cheating?

Seems every developer these days feels the need to put some form mechanic restriction in order to make things "difficult".

I've never wanted to cheat to make Insanity less difficult. If it's hard, it's working as intended. I agree that the save system sucks; but a person can just turn down the difficulty, or improve their tactics during the mission in question. I recall experiencing two frustrating deaths during my first PT in the Eos Kett Base. I was not pleased to be essentially booted back to the beginning, and have enemies respawn. By the third attempt I had learned how to speed through that base like a hurricane of death, though. It seems so easy, now. Hang Time is unique, in that it's apparently impossible on PC.

In this case, it's to compensate for the broken save mechanic. It's SP, so it's not hurting anyone else if the OP decides to cheat to keep from getting continually reset thanks to lack of save points.

Agreed. Why they didn't allow for manual saves is beyond me. The part that gets me is some of the save slots drop you into enemy spawn points. Havarl is the worst for it but Kadara is really bad too. Just one of many decusions that leaves me wondering what they were thinking. That and the powerwheel and warp. Three things I really enjoyed about ME combat that are gone.

It's SP, so it's not hurting anyone else if the OP decides to cheat to keep from getting continually reset thanks to lack of save points. I don't think it's broken, though; just sucky. They likely wanted to add challenge and disincentivize save scumming of decision-points. I'm not saying it's good or bad, just that this seems to have been their intent. Whatever the case, I don't want it to seem in pursuing an argument with you. I just wanted to make sure my meaning was understood. I agree that no one is hurt by SP cheating. I just don't see why a difficulty-based trophy like "Unwavering" would be satisfying if one cheats to get it. I'm finished derailing, if that's even what this was. The OP will likely return and wonder why I was even discussing trophies.

Not sure how far you can go before it becomes unavailable but I definitely didn't do it as soon as I got it. It was one of the final missions I did on Voeld. I might have even done it after my first trip to Havarl. I'd suggest doing some side quests and levelling up more. I'm not really sure how you're still using level 1-2 weapons at that point anyway, tbh.

If you've done everything on Eos etcetera then go to Havarl first and do everything there you should be at least at level 10 or 11 before heading to Voeld, so you should be able to craft a Research level 3 weapon of your choice (assuming you're not short on minerals) which can make that mission easier. Anyway if you're talking about the Taking out the Heart mission you don't have to do it first you can do some of the filler missions to build up some points before doing that particular mission.
As for the inability to manual save and those annoying auto save points, they're a pain in the ass.

Oh yes I distinctly remember trying to do Voeld's base on Insanity. I got one-shot by a grenade trying to dodge it on the last mob spawn before entering inside the base. If you die at any point you start all the way back at the caves. Really fun stuff.
You have to take it very slow in that mission. You trigger enemy spawns in certain areas so it becomes a case of "trigger spawn, run back to a good spot" for me to beat it.

You lost the opportunity? Really??
I thought it would just sit there and it wouldn't penalise you for it. The Angara just think the code might change.
Anyone know at what point? I still have the missions and have completed Eos, havarl and Voeld. Just unlocked Kadara but haven't visited yet.
Level 29 I think.
Edit: Just checked - I can still get the angaran to unlock it. An alternative is to unlock the shield gate early on but don't proceed up to the base. IF it does have a timer.

I believe the clock starts without warning. After I saved the uncle from the Kett labor camp, he asked me to deliver something to Techix. There I was informed that it was a map of the Kett command center, and oh by the way, the codes were about to change. The center had to be attacked immediately. So I did.
My accidental mistake was saving the uncle at the beginning of Voeld, so I was stuck with a really low level build and weapons. Better strategy would be to save the uncle much later, when everything was stronger. But who knew?
In my first playthrough, I did not immediately attack the command center, but waited a long time as I leveled up. Then later, no matter what I did, I couldn't find a way into the cave. So I assume the mission timed out.

I learned my lesson on my 2nd playthrough: never do Voeld first, or you have to stop mid-planet story arc (makes no sense to leave the planet at that point) or rush to fight powerful enemies in a very long battle (what OP says).
If you do Havarld first, you can progress on the main storyline and it will drop you on Voeld by itself, and when you're done with it, you will be far more ready to tackle the rest of the voeld sidequests.

Wow. I had no idea there was a timer on the mission to begin or it'd lock. I'm pretty sure on my first play through I did most of Voeld before starting it.
As for your predicament, I'd drop the difficulty, OP. It's a sucky solution but it's the only one I can think of unless you restart the Angara mission and then don't pick up the labor camp mission too soon.

Why they chose not to allow players to save during those missions is incomprehensible to me. Whether they intend to change it in a patch remains to be seen. "Challenge" and "Difficulty" BW introduced this "feature" with ME2 DLCs and we got it in ME3 priority missions as well Why? No idea, maybe some lobotomized moron told them this sort of "challenges" is fun, certainly there are enough people who like this sort of things. I know two people RL who prefer checkpoints to free saves, but certainly not in such a type of game. Just another proof how BW design department screwed... but hey, the game is perrrrrrrrrfect you know, so many people giving 10/10. geezer117 the only timed mission is on Eos, take your time with the Voeld command center
