I love Jaal so it was a no-brainer for me, but I wish (in general, not just because of this) that ME had a 3 squadmate team like DA has...then if people don't super love Jaal but want his insight they could still have had their 2 other preferred squadmates with them without losing anything...because I can definitely see how it would be annoying for people who wouldn't generally have chosen him to feel forced to for certain missions, aka practically all the main story missions.

He makes a lot of sense to bring along if you romance him and RP close ties/interest in Angara. If you are more Initiateve centered or distrustful character, it is better to leave him behind, and you will get more dialogue that way on Havarl and Voeld, because he will pipe in over the com.

Watching him pout and asking to join you is also pretty funny lol

Jaal = Javik . If you didn't take Javik for some missions, Thessia for example, you lost A LOT stuff. If you will not take Jaal for EVERY mission connected to Angara, you lost even more. Javik > Jaal though Speaking of Javik I'm pretty sure he voiced an angaran (one of the scientists you have to unfreeze i think?)

By the way, MEA does have one of the worst cases of forcing the character upon the player, but he's not in our squad. It's Reyes and his Kadara errands.
I disliked that man from the moment he had shown up, but I could not avoid the fucking rooftop scene, and neither could I tell him to FO with chasing his ex-girlfriends and stealing him booze. It was terribly immersion-breaking to have objectives like 'keep helping that guy in order to get an outpost' for the planetary mission entry.

Cerberus makes sense since it's a necessity, which is explained to the character AND to the player. We don't have 'keep helping TIM' or 'do as the guy says' kind of objectives. Plus there are all the options for expressing the dislike\distrust for the organisation and playing the 'I'm not Cerberus' angle.

This has been discussed ad nausea on the old board, so rather than re-tread stuff I've already typed pages about, I'll simply link someone I pretty much agree with. If you're interested in my side of the argument, feel free to peruse at your leisure. If not, that's fine. www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=28582I linked where Shamus starts with ME2, but the whole retrospective is rather interesting.

I rarely used Jaal in my first playthrough. He is overly bland, despite being an alien from another galaxy. On my second playthrough, I liked seeing other characters bounce off of him. For example, when he asked Drack about the Genophage, I got to see just how sensitive he is about it(You want me to casually talk about the thing that ended my species?).
Being forced to work with the Illusive man then being forced to betray him kinda annoyed me. Still, the Shepherd Trilogy offered many more opportunities for roleplaying than ME:A.

I like Jaal. He's a cool character, and I enjoy his interactions with Drack and Liam in particular. But I definitely agree that the game makes me feel obligated to drag him along way too much. It'd be fine if it were just for rescuing the Moeshae, but I also have to bring him to Voeld. And Havarl. And Meridian. Hell, even on Kadara, which he hates, I get more content with him on the squad because there's potential Resistance recruits and Angara murder plots and such. Add to that the fact that I know his romance, which I have zero interest in, got way more resources put into it than the options I actually like (which got super shorted on content in comparison) and I find myself resenting him a bit.
Makes him feel like MEA's version of Liara. Where he's pushed on me to the point where it's soured me on a character that otherwise might have been a favorite.

While I don't sour on characters, I totally get this. It was one of my very few criticisms about Garrus, whom I otherwise love. The game should never assume that your PC is going to be bestest buddies forever with an NPC. Never. And unfortunately Mass Effect is worse about this than Dragon Age. Mass Effect tends to assume that characters like Garrus, Liara, and Jaal are either going to be your love interest or your bestest friend forever, and fail to account for the players who simply aren't interested in those characters. But Dragon Age allows the player to kick most NPCs out of their party. Even the "mandatory" NPCs, like Varric in DA2, are not assumed to be your friend.

It would be awesome if they had a mechanic for making an unromanced squadmate you take out with you the most your 'bestie' and have some of the dialog and banter reflect that. For me, Garrus was my bestie, from ME1 through ME3 and did more missions with my Shep than the LI (when he wasn't the LI), so I really enjoyed the portrayal of that friendship through the series. But I can see how it would be annoying if you didn't actually feel that way. And it would be great if the character you did feel you developed the closest friendship with was recognized as such instead.

Jaal was annoying, probably more annoying than Liam. That is impossible.
