Just like another recent monumental EA flop - Battlefied 1  which Origin had on 40% off within a month or release. Yup totally rock hard proof of not staying popular and utter failure.

No more Origin pre-orders for me. I'll just wait until a week after release and get it half-price.

I don't think they were really saying it is, and if they were they'd be wrong. There's a reason other games are going to to their roots(a lot of people are getting tired of the futuristic approach) or using old settings again, cause BF1 made it work plus BF1 itself did better than the last few BF games.

i believe the point was even the best games are doing sales. Overwatch does free to play periods to entice people to buy once that period is up. Halo 5 has had various sales and even has done a free to play period (keep in mind that is Microsofts flag franchise). Games going on sale so early isn't a move of desperation, especially now when various AAA games go on sale so soon (I got andromeda on sale before it even launched). Sales happen to encourage more to buy really, it doesn't need to mean they're desperate and trying to get sales anyway possible. I'd call it desperate if a 60$ game dropped to 10-20$ right after it launched as at that point they're just trying to get rid if those extra copies.
