Haven't found a thread about the series and decided to create one. Shadowrun Returns ( Steam, GOG) MAN MEETS MAGIC & MACHINE. The year is 2054. Magic has returned to the world, awakening powerful creatures of myth and legend. Technology merges with flesh and consciousness. Elves, trolls, orks and dwarves walk among us, while ruthless corporations bleed the world dry. You are a shadowrunner - a mercenary living on the fringes of society, in the shadows of massive corporate arcologies, surviving day-by-day on skill and instinct alone. When the powerful or the desperate need a job done, you get it done... by any means necessary. In the urban sprawl of the Seattle metroplex, the search for a mysterious killer sets you on a trail that leads from the darkest slums to the city’s most powerful megacorps. You will need to tread carefully, enlist the aid of other runners, and master powerful forces of technology and magic in order to emerge from the shadows of Seattle unscathed. The unique cyberpunk-meets-fantasy world of Shadowrun has gained a huge cult following since its creation nearly 25 years ago. Now, creator Jordan Weisman returns to the world of Shadowrun, modernizing this classic game setting as a single player, turn-based tactical RPG.
Shadowrun: Dragonfall ( Steam, GOG) In 2012, magic returned to our world, awakening powerful creatures of myth and legend. Among them was the Great Dragon Feuerschwinge, who emerged without warning from the mountains of Germany, unleashing fire, death, and untold destruction across the countryside. It took German forces nearly four months to finally shoot her down - and when they did, their victory became known as The Dragonfall. It’s 42 years later - 2054 - and the world has changed. Unchecked advances in technology have blurred the line between man and machine. Elves and trolls walk among us, ruthless corporations bleed the world dry, and Feuerschwinge’s reign of terror is just a distant memory. Germany is splintered - a stable anarchy known as the “Flux State” controls the city of Berlin. It’s a place where power is ephemeral, almost anything goes, and the right connections can be the difference between success and starvation. For you and your team of battle-scarred shadowrunners, there’s no better place to earn a quick payday. Now, a new threat is rising, one that could mean untold chaos and devastation. One that soon has you and your team caught on the wrong side of a deadly conspiracy. The only clue: whispers of the Dragonfall. Rumors that the Great Dragon Feuerschwinge may still be alive, waiting for the right moment to return…
Shadowrun: Hong Kong ( Steam, GOG) HONG KONG. A stable and prosperous port of call in a sea of chaos, warfare, and political turmoil. The Hong Kong Free Enterprise Zone is a land of contradictions - it is one of the most successful centers of business in the Sixth World, and home to one of the world’s most dangerous sprawl sites. A land of bright lights, gleaming towers, and restless spirits where life is cheap and everything is for sale.

I played through Dragonfall and got part of the way through Hong Kong. Still need to get around to finishing the latter. I absolutely love the setting and the writing of the games is top notch.

I actually played them all recently, hadn't been through them since release. Returns is probably the one i am not rushing back to play in the future, but both Dragonfall and Hong Kong are fantastic.
Favourite companions have to be Glory and Gobbet. Actually didn't know the entire Glory arc before i played Dragonfall again this time. Last time i respected her wish on not talking and i didn't delve deeper into the conversation.

The bonus campaign for Hong Kong was pretty good. The main story for it was so so, but the side ops were awesome. What i really enjoyed about Hong Kong in general was the option to talk your way through most quests. I played a Troll who was focused on melee with Cyberware, but he was still charismatic/intellectual. The first 10 hours or so i only got into a few fights. It felt like Returns and Dragonfall just had a lot more combat even if you were a very charismatic individual. Not that i mind, i really enjoy the combat system of Shadowrun.

I loved this series so much, I purchased them on Steam and GOG. I do have a hard time re-playing this series though. It was only really great once, for me. After I knew what was coming, it became a whole lot less interesting.
That said, in my latest run, with a magic user, I got pretty far. Almost up to the final boss, and made some interesting rpg esque choices regarding my character (I always took the one dialog option that didn't call auntie whats her name, auntie. I was cordial, polite, ect. But I simply refused to call her auntie).
That said, I don't regret my purchases. These games are amazing, and very much worth your time. The stories are deep, and compelling. The combat is very tactical, but very fun. And the AI in these battles, is very good at what it does.

Is this thread specifically about the Harebrained Schemes titles and Shadowrun video games in particular?
Because I have quite a few tales and accolades from the PnP version, about characters that you can't find in the digital versions.
Let's see I had a runner that went by Bokor, a Chinese hobgoblin mage who practiced voodoo and had an affinity for letting spirits ride him. There was one guardian spirit in particular that he was lifelong friends with who would routinely possess Bokor to help in fights or just when the hobgoblin wanted it to take in pleasures of the mortal plane. Bokor wasn't that impressive on his own, but he was optimized in such a way that he could let up to a Force 16 version of his guardian spirit ride him. For reference, a force 16 spirit is just shy of being a Greater Spirit, one of those beings that can hold sway over entire mana planes.
I also had a runner by the name of Glitch. He was a street sammy/cyber zombie. He was so wired up that you couldn't even tell what race he was originally, being little more than a brain and some vital organs in a jar, tucked into a robot body. I made that character as an attempt to go against Shadowrun's bias regarding transhumanism, namely that losing once's Essence made you less than (meta)human and you were ultimately worse off for plugging cyber into your body. If I recall correctly, I had him down around 0.1 - 0.03 Essence, and I role-played him as someone who viewed the flexibility and adaptability of becoming something non-human actually set him apart and above the masses that clung to their natural forms.

Ah. How I miss the time when I used to play Shadowrun PnP with a few friends... I hear that, it's been many a moon since I last sat down with my gaming group to play in that setting. Though, for me, Shadowrun is one of those paradoxical games. I would love to play it more, as I love the universe, but at the same time I don't like having to spend two and a half hours making just one character, especially if you are going to take the time to optimize said character properly and have them actually be competent at their intended role.

Well, to be fair, I enjoyed playing it, but I wasn't what one what describe as massively competent with the rules and stats. I simply *loved* the atmosphere. It helped that our DM was very good and could cover for those of us who weren't as knowledgeable about the game's system.
Same here. The Shadowrun universe is one of the most interesting settings I've come across compared to others like D&D, Pathfinder, Deadlands, etc. But, sometimes I feel that the crunchiness of Shadowrun can get in the way. My group's DM had a piece of software that helped simplify the character creation process, and he did most of the work. I would just come up with concepts and then he would work with me to create a suitable character. A big part of the reason why we haven't gone back to play more is our DM doesn't have that same level of free time to work with individual players to make their characters.

There are a few good character creators available online, I used one for my current character too.
Right now I'm playing (unfortunately in very irregular intervals) a human christian theurgist mage named Priest. The party is not very fond of his insistence of healing any surviving enemies after combat, but I really enjoy playing him because it kinda allows me as atheist to express what I think a good christian should be, if that makes any sense.
Latest hilarious moment: during a run in Sweden, the party met a Viking gang that revered the old scandinavian gods. When Priest struck down some hostile con security with lightning, the gangers all cheered, thinking he was a servant of Thor...

I haven't played PnP Shadowrun in years, but I still recall a time when our group was framed for a job (well not "framed" exactly, but the details were greatly exaggerated) and Lone Star had us all in hiding. Our attempts to get leads on who set us up were not panning out (cold dice all around) and all our contacts could tell us is "Lone Star is looking for you.
over and Over and OVER again!
After that, "Lone Star is looking for you" became the catch phrase for any botched attempt to gather information, regardless of setting

This was a great surprise. If you're looking for "old" Bioware, this is as close as it gets, currently ( even with all the differences). Hong Kong in particular, did a great job with characters and dialogue...BSN would go crazy over Gobbet.

I'd literally never played a tabletop RPG until a local sci-fi club hosted a round of Shadowrun this past weekend. It was fun, but it moved veeeeeery slowly - we must have spent an hour and a half just getting through a basic scenario of stopping a gang from robbing a convenience store. I accidentally got a bystander killed by trying to trip one of the gang members when he was charging a teammate, and he fell and stabbed the store clerk by accident.
Are any of the Shadowrun video games particularly better/worse from the perspective of a Bioware fan?

The Shadowrun Returns base game's campaign's really short and (I hear; haven't played it) nothing special. Dragonfall and Hong Kong are both worth playing, but the former's much better by my reckoning. Mostly because Hong Kong's combat is ridiculously easy even on the highest difficulty and the story drags on a fair bit.

I love the Shadowrun universe, the combo of sci fi tech and magic is great. My dream would have been to see old school bioware take on the ip and base a game around the same style as Dragon Age Origins..
