I did not play the other DA games. Wondering if their main character was always a human?

I did not play the other DA games. Wondering if their main character was always a human? No. In the Origin you can try to play as human mage/noble, elf mage/city elf (from alienage)/dalish, dwarf noble/casteless. In the DA2 yes, you can play only as human, only as Hawke. Let's try, worth it!

As Catilina noted above, in DAO you can play as a city elf from the Denerim alienage, a Dalish hunter, or an elven mage from the Circle of Magi

DA2 was the only game where you HAD to play as a human.

Good. Thanks. I don't play as human. Ever. Not if someone paid me. Not if they paid me a lot. Not even for gay butt smacks with a french elf. Yep. I am starting to suspect some sour grapes from the Reddit forums are human supremacists. I mentioned I liked DAI only and would not play any of the other DA games and got so many down votes I thought I was on a cut cable elevator to hell. Oh well. It's like when I told the Witcher forums I wanted a chance to play as a gay male elf to the chorus of screams that Geralt was not gay, to my pleas I meant being allowed to make my own character, which got an even worse reaction. *sigh*

Well, there's very strong Origins nostalgia. A century or two from now and robots have enslaved the human race, there will be fans pleading with their cybernetic overlords to bring back the Warden.
Robots: Do you also want us to stop whipping you? Fans: Well, yes. But the Warden thing is more important!

If you want to play an elf then I'd definitely recommend Dragon Age Origins. I liked all the options for an elf, although a Circle mage elf isn't that different from a Circle mage human, but the City and Dalish origin stories really give you a feel for what it is like to be an elf in Thedas. Not only that but if you want to play a gay male elf, then you can romance a male elf. So give it a go.

It's like when I told the Witcher forums I wanted a chance to play as a gay male elf to the chorus of screams that Geralt was not gay, to my pleas I meant being allowed to make my own character, which got an even worse reaction. *sigh* I see your experience of the Witcher forums matches mine - and I didn't even touch such a hot topic. Having said that, I prefer to play as a human because it appears to be most honest to me. Elves and Dwarves - even qunari - are actually humans that look a little different and come from different cultures. They're all human in everything that counts, so why should I have a preference here except an aesthetic one, or one of background culture? Now if I could play a *really* non-human character - within DA, a spirit comes to mind, if written competently - I'd jump at the chance, but between standard humans, short stocky humans, humans with pointy ears and big humans with horns I choose the standard human. In DAO, I played a City Elf among others, and that *was* very enjoyable, but again, it was because of the background culture and the specific plot of the CE origin. Safira Tabris never felt non-human to me.

I liked playing as a city elf in DAO. Lots of fun for that playthrough +1. There was another thread not too long ago about how the city elf origin was the most underrated of the bunch. Couldn't agree more. Come to think of it, the only disappointment I had with the DAI character selection was that the elf wasn't a city elf.

I thought the city elf origin story was one of the best. It was pretty gritty, and very well written. It doesn't tie that much into the overall story, though. That might be why it is getting underrated. I would chalk it up as tied for the first place a long with the dwarf noble origin.

I did not play the other DA games. Wondering if their main character was always a human? If you are play on the pc you can download the Playable Elf Race mod from the nexus link that allows you to play as a city elf. I found it to be a rather enjoyable even if the game considers you to be a human Bethany, Carver, Leandra and Gamlen will be elves.
