I just started rewatching Stargate Atlantis and as I watch, I'm thinking how so many ideas in Mass Effect seem like they were pulled from Stargate. Ancient Technology (stargates) = Mass Effect relays (stargates) And Remnant technology (mighty technology that we use for our current needs with very minimal understanding of it) Remnant Technology has that whole Ancient vibe to it with the massive vaults so far beyond the comprehension of races in this game. Ancients did seed planets with life. It's how the wraith came to be. Ancients traveled to other galaxies. In the game we stumble across their technology then use it for ourselves much like Stargate series. And Ryder (male ryder ) is a mix of John Shepard and Jack O'neil with the witty sarcasm. A few people even commented how certain things Ryder has said made them think of Jack O'Neil. Our John Shepard (default) doesn't even look that different from Atlantis' John Shepard.

Honestly I got more of a Halo vibe than a Stargate one. The whole 'Forerunner' artifacts and structures lying around with the 'Sentinels' protecting and maintaining everything. Not to mention the Builders all mysteriously disappeared and the Angara thing where they were "indexed" for repopulation later on.
I'll bet we'll get a "Librarian" type of character if there's ever another game too.

Halo with the "sentinel" type robots. However the tech does have a Stargate vibe. It responds to a specific gene, it activates when you come near etc..

Srsly?
Great, now both you and television have ruined one of the greatest forerunners (for me at least) of the past millennium. The television show for Stargate was atrocious.
Should be right up there with like Castle, NCIS, Jericho, etc.
"I know the world just ended, but... *giggle* Ya wanna go to prom?" Wait.....
No wait, srsly.
What?
Are you fucking joking me?

Uh-huh. I once heard someone describe this show as them all being eighty years old telling dick and fart jokes laughing uncontrollably.
I guess that's your age.
Eighty years old. Laughing uncontrollably at dick and fart jokes.

The makers draw all from the same archetypal pool, so the memes are the same only the wrapping of telling differs slightly. The wrapping is dependent on creativity. Whether you like that creativity is up to each individual.

Mass Effect is nothing like Stargate. Mass Effect had a beautiful scientist who is as bad ass as she is brilliant Oh...well. Stargate didn't have a cool alien that character that isn't emotional and was formerly part of an enemy faction... Um...Okay Stargate ddin't have a tough but fair general that somtimes breaks the rules to help out the heroes. Damn...oh I know! Stargate didn't have one of it's main characters die only to come back later through a process that isn't very well explained! I fucking give up...

So does this mean that Udina is Senator Kinsey? And Jacob is so obviously Jonas Quinn. Bland guy fills in for Kaiden for a while, leaves when Kaiden returns, and shows up later for a one-off, complete with a new super-smart girlfriend.

When I first saw those rings on Eos I thought they would be some cool alien technolgy, much like the stargates they resemble, and what did I get? Water purification, built by boring humans at that.

How many deaths did Ryder have this game? Three?
1. Planetside 2. Archon's ship 3. Khi Tishara
4. DLC 1 5. DLC 2 6. DCL 3
Of course, if that is the case, I wonder if Ryder only gets nine lives?

Our John Shepard (default) doesn't even look that different from Atlantis' John Shepard. Last names are different. It's John Sheppard for Atlantis, and John Shepard for Mass Effect. Not to mention the hair. As well as Shepard is younger than Sheppard.

I just started rewatching Stargate Atlantis and as I watch, I'm thinking how so many ideas in Mass Effect seem like they were pulled from Stargate. These are old tropes you've mentioned, it's not something invented by SGA, but I personally saw a lot of similarities in plot structure. Small squad going to various missions, paragon/renegade decisions (even though SGA Shepard always chose Paragon ones), even loyalty missions.

A few people even commented how certain things Ryder has said made them think of Jack O'Neil. Hey! That's me! I did that.. probably among others somewhere.. Yes, I've commented before that Andromeda specifically reminds me a tremendous amount of Stargate Atlantis. Overall I think themes of Stargate, much like many other sci-fi series, like Star Trek or Star Wars being the most prominent, were used to create Mass Effect. The name "Shepard" is fairly common and with a lot of themes from Mass Effect and Shepard being vaguely having themes of Jesus Christ, I think you could easily say it's coincidence. However, Stargate Atlantis premiered three years before Mass Effect released with the lead character being named John Sheppard (two p's! ) , and then ME also had the default male main character being named John Shepard. I love both franchises so any crossover themes are fantastic for me. I think Ryder takes more cues from Sheppard in Atlantis than O'Neill, but considering Sheppard was a variation off O'Neill to begin with that was fleshed into his own character later... it's a good mix. I said in a different thread the overall story of Andromeda is, broad strokes, the same as Atlantis. An expedition from the Milky Way travels to a different galaxy and finds the highly advanced remains of a prior civilization that seeded life through the galaxy. Their first mission, the experienced military commander is killed and the younger, cocky main character takes over as the leader in over his head to make first contact and establish friends. The enemy is a feared opponent with a galactic empire, using biological weaponry against their opponents. Despite all the odds, the underdogs from the Milky Way defeat their enemy in the end because the main character has a special attribute that make them unique and can interface with the ancient technology. I'll just say that I love Stargate. I love Mass Effect. I've always wanted a Stargate RPG style game and Mass Effect is the closest there has been.

I think you'll find Babylon 5 is the show they copied almost wholesale. Pity they didn't finish the job at the end(ing).
Anyway, while I'm here, I'll also remind everyone that personal attacks are no go. Attack the argument, not the person. Thanks.

You should watch the original movie, OP. It was a great movie, with James Spader and Kurt Russell. Again and again and again. Yeah, Daniel died quite a damn bit in Stargate. He spent more time in a sarcophagus than some of the Goa'uld it seemed.
