How many sci-fi stories did not discover ancient advanced tech that they cleverly disabled or used, and/or had a conflict with AI?

I don't know how reliable they are, but one of your squadmates flat out says "you were dead, Ryder" in #3. I could've sworn that SAM's dialogue to the sibling suggested that Ryder was still alive but needed the implant reset before the heart stopped. They handled the term "dead" very loosely in the game, anyway. You aren't dead when your heart stops, afaik it takes several minutes from then until the damage to your brain is too severe to survive. Depends on your definition of "dying", but technically Ryder didn't die at all in the course of the game, even if it was said several times, or at least didn't die properly or they would have stayed dead.

How many sci-fi stories did not discover ancient advanced tech that they cleverly disabled or used, and/or had a conflict with AI? Lost in Space. Sadly MEA did not copy any of its golden aspects : aimlessly flying somewhere while Cora and Peebee would busy themselves with laundry and cooking . SAM , a crossbreed between a hot water tank and a water dispenser would flail its pipes around screaming "Danger, Danger!" .

Speaking of comparisons, just watched Covenant, and has anyone else noticed the absurd number of simularities between the Alien Franchise and Andromeda and even Mass Effect as a whole?

Alien has Aliens that need a host to reproduce and the creatures that emerge are nothing like in ME. Only similarities are cryo.

Eh, a big thing for me in Alien/Aliens (I don't acknowledge anything after that) is the corporate corruption theme. Most of the awful things that happen is specifically because some shitty company just has to have these crappy aliens instead of eradicating them from the universe.

Frederick Pohl's Gateway series (ie saga of the Heechee) comes to mind.

Mass Effect is nothing like Stargate. *Snip* Damn...oh I know! Stargate didn't have one of it's main characters die only to come back later through a process that isn't very well explained! I fucking give up... Again and again and again. That video was hysterical. I remember watching SG1 back in the day, but I forgot just how often Jackson had a death scene.

Yeah, those books are essentially ME if it was written by a pacifist.

I prefer the movie to the TV show. The movie treated the Stargate a bit more seriously; there was fear, trepidation, but still some excitement and the thrill of discovery. The show made it seem..I don't know..common. Hey, who wants lunch? Let's take the stargate to Zev Prime and get some space nuggets; it didn't seem to be taken quite as seriously. Also, I'm a huge Kurt Russell fan and not a Macgyver fan; that casting never made sense to me.
I'm sure a lot of parallels can be found; writers are people; they internalize things they see and hear and it may come out later or some element of it in their writing.

The movie treated the Stargate a bit more seriously While the show definitely embraces lots of moments of levity, I don't think I can take the movie seriously. I mean Oneil's hair...just...just look at it I give it 3 out of 10 high and tights.

Then again I love most every groundhog day scenario I've seen in TV and movies. Some are done so well.

You know I have been thinking about this off and on lately a similar, and related topic...I swear....probably because I have actually watched a couple of episodes of SG-1 recently.
You know the Shepard vs Ryder argument? How Shepard is a bad ass alpha male and Ryder is a weak spineless wannabee who can't do anything bad ass, is affeminate, etc, etc?
Well back in the day, when SG-1 entered its ninth and tenth seasons...I remember having a very similar argument. When SG-1 switched out the beloved Colonel/ General Jack O'Neill (played by the much talented Richard Dean Anderson) was replaced by Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell (played by the even more talented Ben Browder), an argument errupted within the fandom. People who liked the old SG-1 and O'Neill and those who didn't. They said that O'Neill was a bad ass, bit sarcastic, hyper competent, and that Mitchell was the opposite...and the new SG-1 was even poorly written. Etc. Etc.
As you can imagine I was in the 'team Mitchell' camp. Though I did not hate O'Neill (hmmm this does seem reeeallly familiar.) But I just plain thought Ben Browder was the better actor, and surprise surprise, while O'Neill did not do any real growing over his eight years on the show...being essentially the same man that he always was. His few interesting character issues were resolved basically in season 1 and only brought up a couple of times throughout the rest of the shows run. Meanwhile Mitchell had a character arc, he had issues that needed to be resolved, he wasn't confident in his own abilities, and needed to prove it to himself, he didn't want to lead SG-1, he wanted to be on SG-1 and learn from the best, but was forced into leadership because...well circumstances. Plus he was determined, able to get the shit kicked out of him, and keep on ticking (just see Ark of Truth for perhaps the best example).
Lesson here? Don't know if there isn't one, but I guess fandoms...fandoms never change.

Not that Mitchell is O'Neill's son - already know that is John Shepard in Atlantis. What I mean is Mitchell actually could be Sam's, Daniel's, or Teal'c's (ok far fetched) son... which if true would truly be awkward. There you go my disturbing thought for the day.

Atlantis really suffered once they turned doctor whatsherface into a replicator. Carter was wasted on the show since she couldn't be as smart as Rodney, which of course she was, if not more so. They even messed up the theme by no longer playing it at the beginning of each episode. Sigh.
