Namely I am wondering if I need to race to Meridian or whether I can do some other missions first.
In Me2 there was a mission that played out a little differently depending on whether you went straight there.

There's no time limit, but if you accidentally start the final mission, you wont't be able to do quests on the Hyperion after it's over.

Don't worry, though, when you get to the point of no return, game will ask you if you really-really-really want to proceed. And you can say no with no consequences.

The "Contagion" quest (you get it from Captain Dunn) can't be completed after you assault Meridian.
There is a side quest on Eos that is timed (it involves some dudes trying to control Remnant).
I don't know of any others.

I didn't notice anything like in ME2 and putting off going through the Omega Relay. But the mission where you have to disable the bombs on the Nexus that Knight set - I put it off for a while, and when I finally did the quest, Kandros said that one bomb already went off and took out a big part of hydroponics. Ryder said something like, "Sorry, I had to help someone first."
There didn't seem to be any actual in-game effect. Hydroponics looked fine, and I still successfully completed the mission. I still felt kind of bad.

Actually, you can still finish it so long as you've spoken with both Dunn and Harry. It will move to the completed folder and say you can't since the Hyperion is gone, but it is still doable.

None of the missions have to be done right away. It should be noted that the stroyline is highly linear. I always wondered why 99% of the time people talk about Eos, its because its the only outpost you have to create before Meridian. Which is why people talk of a 9 hour playthrough. Because Meridian will activate the other vaults and provide them with full terraforming instructions anyway (like Aya), it makes writing a sequel much easier.
Its unfortunate because the OT dealt with storylines that spanned 3 games with choices quite well. Sure the ending was so bad but that was all on them, they definitely did not write themselves into a corner because nothing of the Reapers motivations was really revealed before the last game.
PS> But based on recent experience I would say its alot better to do Havarl before Voeld.

The Augmentation Crafting side mission on Elaaden seems to have the Krogan go missing after a specified period of time. So you can't pick it up. Probably a bug. Seems to happen sometime before going to Khi'Tasira and after rescuing the Salarian Ark. I don't know exactly what causes this to happen.

Yeah, I did it right away and got the same message... that one bomb had gone off in hydroponics. I think it's just set up to firmly establish in the minds of the players that she is a very dangerous person. However, it is wield that they never actually show any damage to hydroponics.

The quest is set up, however, that you can obtain the information about what Knight is up to by helping her son Alain with his health problems. This involves leaving the site and crafting a cure at the Kadara Port and returning... which would arbitrarily give knight a head start. If you opt just to fight everyone there to get access to the computer data, all you have to do to make the statement accurate is stop and do one other short side quest in the Kadara Slums or Port before reboarding the Nexus. The layout of Kadara is such that you cannot go directly back to Tempest without going back through the slums.

The layout of Kadara is such that you cannot go directly back to Tempest without going back through the slums. You can extract from anywhere in the Nomad, just like any other planet. But on foot, yeah, have to go back through the slums and up to the port.
