Uhm, I am no spring chicken, and I don't think RPG suffers from upgrades to combat, which is very enjoyable in Andromeda. My gaming experience is limited to Bioware games, a couple of Obsidian Games and Blade and Soul. The only reason I kept playing BnS was because I liked combat so much. And I like Andromeda very much as well as prefer DA2 over other versions of combat in that franchise. The less pausing, the easier to understand skill trees, the better for me. BUT! In a way of a hug, the 2016 was actually full of new games by Obsidian that do classic style isometric combat by Obsidian, Pillars, Tyranny and Numenoria. I am wondering if I even can play Tyranny now (I want that one out of the three because of the block-style storyline) but I think all of them should be right up your alley. I bet you will get hours and hours of old-fashioned gaming with some upgrades in that market. I think I get where you're going... have you played the Last of us? Did combat matter there? It's my favorite franchise (ugh. hate that term) RPG wise outside of Mass Effect. I want that in space! Nope, because as I said, my gaming is literally limited to BioWare's Games with 2 Obsidian sequel titles) and Blade and Soul. Literally. I have not seen any other developer making games suitable for my gaming preferences.

There is a difference because BioWare made it happen for me. I have literally wasted thousands (probably tens of thousands in my lifetime) on games that I played for less than an hour. Horrible investments. BioWare, on the other hand, is like buying art. Cinematic cut scenes, well-timed and appropriate music, attention to detail in ambience, interaction with fully voiced characters and gameplay that keeps you immersed. BioWare is an art studio in my humble opinion. Just like CDPR and I don't like their stuff, but art is art.

I'd say, ME:A focused on exploration/traveling more than on combat (except priority/loyalty missions). It would be good to see more responsive controls and more tactical and diverse combat. I guess, there's enough story, but it is spread across locations rather thin and completionist runs are more time-consuming, than I'd like. Did the combat serve the open world/questing/main story? Yes... they created these great open worlds that were unique and beautifully crafted... but after that initial impression and realizing most of these big planets were Hinterlands 2.0 was it not boring after a while? I actually enjoyed the system to system planetary travelling (once they gave us the skip option). Yes, I think so. Or, at least, the story justified all those opponents thrown at the player (the kett, Roekaar, exiles, etc.). It mostly depends on personal preferences and perception, on how much the player enjoys the gameplay. Edit. The Last of Us is as RPG as Assassin's Creed - there are resources to collect and things to craft, but the story is linear and player's agency is non-existent.

It's my favorite franchise (ugh. hate that term) RPG wise outside of Mass Effect. I want that in space! I've done my share of looking around for games, and there's a few that are worth adding, I think. There's at least three cinematic RPGs from relatively small companies supposed to come out soon: - Deliverance: Kingdom Come. Set in 15th century Bohemia; historical fiction with no fantasy elements.
- Elex. Science fantasy.
- Vampyr. A gothic horror/dark fantasy game set in early 19th century London, by the makers of Life is Strange.
If you're willing to go for isometric, turn-based games, there are a few that have come out recently or will be coming out soon: - The Banner Saga. A viking-inspired trilogy made by former Bioware employees.
- Seven: The Days Long Gone. A post-apocalyptic science fantasy game made by former CDPR employees.
- Shadorun: Returns, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, and Shadowrun: Hong Kong. Cyberpunk/science fantasy.
- Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs. I'm generally not into JRPGs, but this comedy fantasy game has a great art style, fun looking combat, and supposedly a big emphasis on diplomacy and forming relationships with your companions.
Sadly, Mass Effect is literally the only space opera RPG franchise I've ever heard of.

I've not played it yet, but it's one of the reasons I'm looking for a cheap PS4 for this summer. It's a well-executed action-adventure game with an engaging story. It can be called an RPG, but you're playing a premade character with premade stats and the whole game is corridor-style like ME3. That's about as much as I can explain it without some apologist jumping my comment. It's a great, great game and I loved it. It's a one and done for me since I'm a keyboard/mouse kind of guy and you're exclusively locked into a controller. It's a classic and I highly recommend it. It's one of those few studios that I hold in high regard with BioWare.

Party-RPGs from Spiders are fairly good. Includes one fantasy RPG (Bound by Flame) and 2 sci-fi (Mars: War Logs and The Technomancer). I'd say they are similar to The Witcher 2 in terms of pacing and narrative, but there's more character customization and better combat (and companions).

Did they focus on combat too much for the new series? The combat certainly is the best part of the game. In my opinion the only thing better than the OT. However I don't buy or play these games for the combat. If I was into a combat game, I would buy a shooter, so yes, this being the major redeeming feature is kind of disappointing to me.

I found a balance, but like DAI I had to make it work by not trying to do everything at once. I'd do a main quest, grabs some side stuff, wrap that up, chat with my crew, rinse and repeat. 7 hours in I was just leaving a completed Eos and hadn't even gone to Voeld or Havarl yet. I actually felt during my recent more thorough playthrough that I was playing a DA game because of all the hidden lore I would stumble upon during my exploring. I did one completionist run in DAI but after that I could never finish another playthrough... just too time consuming... I would only start enother PT to interact differently with certain core characters I liked. So basically Dorian/Sera/Viv. But, once I finished their personal quests ended I only cared about trespasser. I was the same way with Andromeda... finished the main story on my speed run... identified the squadmates I liked and then proceeded to only care about them and then the conclusion of my Ryder's story... which was a letdown. Same here. I have one complete OCD run and I'm satisfied with that. I attempted what you did, but in the end, it was too much effort to do a full run. Same with Andromeda. I did a speed run on my first playthrough because I was using my friend's PS4 and it was so buggy that doing any side quest was a risk of breaking the save. The full run was abandoned because I just lost interest on the journey due to the fact that it is still very buggy after 1.05 and my patience was already expended. New DLC will probably arrive the same time my new rig is up and running so I'm seriously pumped for that. However, with the overall issues Andromeda and Inquisition share, it's only going to be a single run again. There are too many gaps that kills the pace. I am probably not articulating right, but the flow is messed up in a way that is hard to explain.

What I noticed is that combat's better than previous ME games, but not that it overwhelmed the story. Truth be told, the couple of story quests that didn't include combat, like the Turian ark, were pleasant surprises. Everything in a story shouldn't have to be about runnin' and gunnin' through a corridor.
I think BW did a really good job with background dialog, both among the crew on the Tempest and with NPC's on the Nexus.

The number of playthroughs I've done, it has become more about the combat than the story. In combat I can use these powers for this playthrough and different powers for another playthrough.
Speedruns add replay value. I've done completionist runs before, but I do speedruns to mix it up from time-to-time
My biggest problem with combat in Andromeda is the lack of a power wheel. In the trilogy I can have a squadmate use this power against that enemy while the other squadmate uses that power against another enemy

... but is this the future of RPG? ...SP is dying and especially the RPG format.. Only true if we are talking about AAA gaming. But there are tons of indie RPGs coming out. I recommend grabbing some and keeping an eye out for new ones. Err... ahem. That's ageist! Man do I feel old.I was 27 in 2007. Edit: Damn I did the math wrong I was 24! Means I'm 34 now! *faints*

I am a pc gamer, and I only like games with customizable protagonist and party with relationships. Trust me. I am to but LOU is in a category of it's own if you love story. Not so much to be honest. I am more likely to play a MMO with a silly story if it allows me to create an interesting character with great customization, cool costuming in an unusual setting than a game with a novel-quality story but a fixed protagonist. The main thing that attracts me to video games is the ability to create my very own Mary Sue and check out an unusual world. assassin Creed would have been right up my alley if they actually expanded on the premise I saw in the movie of being able to hook a character (of your own background, researcher or a scoundrel) and send him or her through time in person, to have adventures in an AU human history, in the periods and locations that are exotic and fantastical. I am also pretty happy with ME and JE, but not that big a fan of DA because setting is not interesting enough. A fixed protagonist, no matter how good his story is, is of no interest to me. And that's why, apparat from combat, I did play Blade and Soul. The world and mindset was different there, and fantasy costuming (not the everything goes modernisms) was elaborate and crazy attractive. The story is so cheesy, but the concentration of cheese is so high, I just bought it. It's like a soap opera, lol, guilty pleasure.

It has more characters I am attached to than in some other games. And I remember Kivan from 20 years ago with his stellar sound set... in place of character development, lol. But having adventures with the bard I have made in that world with that crew -Imoen, Minsk, Branwen, Dynaheir and Kivan stuck with me. Was not a great story, weren't great characters. But the feel was awesome. And Andromeda has the same thing, only with far better chars. Reyes alone and Kadara fun is going stay with me for a long time. And both Tishujen and Vasco Ryders will be hard to forget, lol.

Be honest. 1 maybe 2 years from now you think anybody who spent time on ME:A will remember it for it's characters/story? I do as a matter of fact. I know I will. I know that people who enjoyed the game will. You read the BW and the Mass Effect Twitter feed and there's many others who definitely will. So, yeah.

So basically everything I wanted/hoped MEA would be.

The number of playthroughs I've done, it has become more about the combat than the story. In combat I can use these powers for this playthrough and different powers for another playthrough. Speedruns add replay value. I've done completionist runs before, but I do speedruns to mix it up from time-to-time My biggest problem with combat in Andromeda is the lack of a power wheel. In the trilogy I can have a squadmate use this power against that enemy while the other squadmate uses that power against another enemy I missed the powerwheel and I'm a keyboard and mouse user. I don't feel at all in control and my situational awareness is very shallow. That's me. I'm used to the Unreal Power Wheel. Even the tactical camera from Inquisition would be of great benefit to me. I can pause it, move my guys into the position I want them in to either tank or give fire support. It would help a great deal bring me back more of that control.

Be honest. 1 maybe 2 years from now you think anybody who spent time on ME:A will remember it for it's characters/story? I know I will. Well said. Boo approves. That statement was right on target like Minsc saying, "Full plate and packing steel."
