So watched the trailer for Anthem, and the character did a really cool dive into the water, but then I was like "Why can't Ryder Swim?" I noticed he keeps drowning when entering deep water or this happens:
Cried myself to sleep last night because of this, no joke.

I'd think the difference between swimming and using a suits jets to propel through the water would be apparent, but okay. As for the clip, cool story.

Yeah well the "freelancer" is stuck on one planet and lives in a walled city and only leaves when they hop into an oversized mech suit. There are no turians, asari, salarians, or krogan. They don't get a starship and travel the stars or even see space.

This might come as news, but a hardsuit weighing over twenty kilograms (I'm being extremely optimistic) isn't exactly fun to swim with.
There's a reason some modern plate carriers have a release function that just ditches them. Swimming with twenty five kilos of stuff on your chest isn't fun. (Seriously, two SAPI plates, primary ammunition, grenades, secondary ammunition, knife, and I could go on - it all weighs a TON together.)

Swimming is overrated anyway. Walking in water is what's hot right now. You should check out Mount and Blade Warband or Napoleonic Wars! You can just walk over the bottom of a river, the only thing that is kinda annoying is that all your ammunition gets wet so you have to scavenge new ammo.

Neither could Shepard, so no big deal. Outside the diving mech, does Shepard ever even get into water? No. The Mako sifts through shallow water on Virmire and that's it. Maybe you can include the hot tub scene with Samara, Jack, Samantha, Tali (still masked), Liara, Ashley, Kasumi and Kelly... but that's about it. Missed opportunity. It could've worked as well with all the male love interests. Any way... I think I successfully trolled some of you.

Why have swimming at all if you're never going to utilize it? Look at Fallout 4. A WHOLE LOT OF SWIMMING TO BE FOUND and A WHOLE LOT OF NOTHING. Just some old tires or shipwreck with a green box (eww.... let's look. Hurray! RNG crap.)...

Hmmm, sorry for being OT but I just played FO4 yesterday and I found a power armor under water in the pond next to Covenant, so I wouldn't say there is nothing. Besides, for me, having all "natural" movement options is a question of immersion (it's why I hated that BW games used to have no jumping). If a character cannot swim in game, that's fine but there needs to be a reason. Now, for both Ryder and Shepard, I could see how they'd have a tough time swimming in their bulky armor, so I don't have a huge problem with it. But in a game like Fallout or TES, where you can change your equipment at any time, not being able to go into water would have been weird. I wouldn't have minded a system though where wearing armor makes you sink immediately or something like that.

I wouldn't talk smack about swimming in FO4, not when you can randomly escape underwater from enemies you underestimated. Came across this massive raider stronghold on the water and I was simply not ready for that kind of mayhem, and I went underwater to escape most of their fire. Eventually they all got nuked but still.

You can get a full set of power armor just 10 minutes into the game. I'm talking underground structures, an aquatic race (dead rad dolphins don't cut it) or something... something, anything... water was a way to make the working canvas smaller instead of filling it with empty, big nothing areas bereft of lore. I know... I traversed it. I've looked through videos like Oxhorn and there's a whole, lot of nothing except the rare useful item you find near land. However, with that being said, WoW has a lot of places underwater and Blizzard makes good use of it.
