I'm getting very good at destroying the assemblers before they have any chance to spawn their little bots (breachers?) but I'm starting to wonder if that's actually starting to result in much less XP for me. Can someone confirm... would I perhaps level up better if I let the assemblers spawn the smaller bots before taking them out?

Answered my own question by replaying a section of the game. Played 1st time and killed off all 4 assemblers in the area before they could spawn their bots (using a sniper rifle) and recorded by XP. Reloaded and played that section again and allowed the assemblers to spawn bots before killing them and got the same about of XP for the effort as I had on the first run... so it apparently makes no difference to the XP. Moral of the story is to kill off the assemblers as quickly as possible.
