It doesn't "have" to but the demand is there and they saw they could meet that demand. That's why extras get made, it'll only stop if money can't be made, the demand isn't there, or if they simply don't want to make anymore.

Did it have to? No, but does a Jade Empire need sequel have to happen either? Look at all the people talking about how they want a sequel to that game and they aren't asking for specific characters to return, they want the world to return. BioWare made two additional IPs after Jade Empire and people still regularly and consistently ask for a sequel to it.
Besides plenty of other long running games have had "meh" entries in the eyes of the playerbase as well.

No but I'm glad it did. It's like a sci-fi DA game now and I love all the new stories they are hinting at in future games, I love the new races and I love the new theme of hope. It's the best thing to happen to ME for an DA/ME gamer like myself!

EA wanted easy money, so I guess it did. A five years development cycle with countless hours of manpower tied to a single project, apart from a huge financial investment, doesn't point to a money grab. All this considered it turned out rather disappointingly, but that certainly wasn't the intent. |
