Thought it would be interesting to reflect back on the Anthem teaser from E3 2014. (excerpt from the BioWare E3 2014 teaser) We know that Jon Warner, Anthem's Game Director started working on the 'new IP' from the summer of 2011, so this teaser is 2.5 years into the project, and we are now 5.5 years into the project. By the time it drops in 2018, the work will have covered 7 years. How much if any of the most minimal of hints from 2014 do you think have survived? And what do you think BioWare will have been up to for 7 years?

We can see the pointy rock formations in the background that looks similar to the one we can see in the gameplay trailer. The worn, rusty objects that looks like you could find in a scrapyard right now aren't that far off to what we see in the market (or near the dungeon where Paul pick up loot). So on the side of environment art direction it mostly stayed the same. Outside maybe of how lush the world should look and the flora present, but that's kinda hard to say because the gameplay trailer is in a valley while this video seems to take shots mostly at the top of a plateau.
The graphical engine was clearly upgraded.
Now to what was said.
There is mention of a "constantly changing world". That was mentioned during the gameplay trailer and one the official website, so we can say that they kept that design concept along. Now the question is if that meant the seasonal change as shown in that video or something else.
Hudson talked about telling very contemporary stories, we haven't seen much of Anthem story yet, so its hard to judge how contemporary Anthem story is.

Coincidentally, last night I tweeted Johnathan Warner if the day/night cycles and seasonal changes were still features of Anthem. But (unsurprisingly) he said they weren't ready to talk about that yet.
My guess is that this'll be part of the "constantly changing world" they've been talking about. And seeing that solar panel covered shack makes me wonder if the original setting was supposed to be more contemporary (than it is now), but the plan changed at some point and they moved to a more futuristic setting.

Half of what they showed then were literally just assets ripped from Battlefield. The trees, the grass, basically everything besides the building. I doubt they had any real vision locked down then besides "a contemporary fictional setting"
Also, just heads up. In the earliest DA3 videos Mark Darrah also talked about how bringing over Frostbite was going to mean "more immersive NPC interactions and living breathing worlds like never before" and what we ended up getting was the safe, been-there-done-that BioWare brand of NPCs that are hard-locked into the ground and half of them clipping through walls just trying to follow scripted patterns. Similarly they talked about a living breathing world for Andromeda again and that did not turn out super dynamic.
I think Anthem is the likeliest to nail it but somehow I don't expect actual day-night cycles to work, simply because it's BioWare and furthermore I noticed that there's some BioWare Austin-quality to when the 3 players dropped in, in their E3 vertical slice. There's some effect that looks really stiff like in SWTOR. They also reused the Jet-jump movement from Andromeda in one part. I expect the movement to be slick and I hope the quest-giving and HUB is great, but somehow I don't expect them to crack the code on making the world feel dynamic, because BioWare has just never been good at that ever.

Grass is grass after all.

From 2011 to the Anthem demo, I believe this IP went though significant morphing. If there is one thing Bio learned is that overselling the game then scaling it back at launch is a no-no. Ubisoft's The Division and Bio's DA:I comes to mind.
Churning out yearly FPS shooters will eventually saturate the gamers' appetite with the same mechanics... Assassin creed fell into this trap. Gamers today want more than a shooter and Anthem's delay to 2018 is an indication that EA and Bio understands this. Recent EA properties now have SP campaigns added to the FPS.
Bio, I believe, has no choice but to add a SP campaign to the co-op / PvE play modes. It's micro-transaction heaven and how the studio will design the co-op mechanics to keep players coming back to play this MMO is an interesting exercise.
My question is "Aren't they competing against themselves?".

Against which title? Much of the excitement I'm seeing online is from the Destiny / Division crowd...

IMO titles in a series should only be out every 2-3 years at quickest, 4-5 years at slowest (6+ wears patience and attention rather thin), and if something is every 1 year, it better be more like an expansion to an existing title.
