Off the east coast of the Japanese island of Honshu there is an underwater ditch that goes down to a depth of 2000m.
Within this ditch lie the firefly squid. They will spend their entire lives living in complete darkness communicating through bioluminescence. Once a year these squid surface to breed and then within hours die.
Their flailing forms lighting the oceans and beaches in one last beautiful brief display before their light fades out forever.
The cherry blossom will flower and for three days grace us with their fragile beauty. Before falling to the floor and ending their display.
There is a melancholy in all of this, in recognising the fleeting nature of life and all things and recognising their beauty and acknowledging that because of death, life is beautiful.
It is the true meaning behind the Mass Effect 3 ending.
It is the principle of Mono no aware.
Sadly we must now apply the principle to our own existence as a fanbase. To acknowledge that the Shepard saga however brief was a cherry blossom in the spring.
That the life of Ryder much like a squid who failed to breed, no matter how brief; was worth playing through, if only because he tried.
I raise a glass to the franchise and everyone in it.
It was a hell of a ride.
