For comparison's sake, another game that invested greatly in driving, yet generated mixed reviews, unable to achieve its highest ambitions, perhaps due to too much driving in its case, was Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Knight. AK at least had vehicle battles, and I've noticed that nobody around here ever seems to mention that element as missing from MEA. Maybe Bio getting out in front of the issue early in development cut off such discussion, but now, especially considering some of the reporting about the game, it seems that Bio's decision to defeat vehicle combat gameplay seems unreasonable and a glaring omission.
Surely, Ryder and Co. didn't have the only vehicle to drive on any of the planets; yet, there's not a single encounter of Nomad vs. anti-Nomad. There's not even any Nomad vs. enemy shuttle(s) action. Perhaps that goes along with Bio's decision not to give the Nomad guns, but out of all of its decisions, this one omission has to be one of the most inexplicable. No guns on the Nomad? No enemy vehicle encounters? There's just no logical reason for that beyond a meta answer: development issues.
I wish Bio would've looked to Rocksteady, or the king of open world vehicle encounters, R*, especially in vehicles-without-guns combat (imagine chasing or being chased by exiles on Kadara) or some form of racing (try to imagine that on H-047c). Having shootouts out-of-vehicle with enemies seems to negate an argument that MEA was about exploration at the cost of having a firing Nomad. In fact, ME1's Mako and ME2's Hammerhead futher cancel out that argument. I don't buy the he's/she's an explorer, not a soldier, argument for a second, considering all the shooting in the game. In fact, wouldn't Gil, seeing all the Kett's firepower, add guns to the Nomad, in response?
MEA could've been more successful if Bio would've added fun vehicle combat in its worlds. It was a missed opportunity that would've greatly upped the excitement. And if Bio were more like R*, it would've gotten to work on adding in vehicle combat rather than toiling away at patches. Oh, well.

I've talked about this a ton but eventually gave up.
It wasn't so much that the Nomad didn't have weapons that bothered me. What bothered me was that the Kett drop ships and shuttles never had weapons to chase after the Nomad or ambush Ryder and crew. Even on foot, fighting armed vehicles would have been fun serving as mini bosses.
It also bothered me that none of the other land vehicles moved. Ever. Having NPCs land vehicles could have allowed for escort missions or just made the world feel more dynamic and alive. Something that is in any other open world game. Arkham Knight, Witcher 3, Assassins Creed, GTA, Zelda BOTW, all have dynamic vehicles, horses, or NPCs.
MEAs static vehicles were about as weird as Assassins Creed Unity's static stage coaches with no horses. The entire city of Paris lacked moving stage coaches and horses which was pretty immersion breaking. MEA suffers from the same issue despite all the other improvements to immersion.
And yes having vehicle combat with the Nomad would have been great. It could have easily been that extra gameplay segment diverse enough to keep the open world from being boring to many people. I really wish it would be added in dlc but the game underperformed so I doubt it.

One of ,my favorite things about the Mako was just BLASTING ground troops with it's missle or whatever it was. So fun to send em flying. I miss that, haha.

You were right about the driving, or lackthereof. My observation in addition to yours is that after some of the recent articles out there that it now becomes clearer why we don't have vehicle combat, despite whatever reason Bio tried to pass off early on, which cannot now be accepted. Just as unfortunate is that they're nowhere near R*, which definitely would've kept working on content and added vehicle combat, if it didn't exist, already (for sure it would've). Even if the game performed acceptably well, I don't think they would've added in vehicle content. They probably might've been direct and clear at this point about incoming story DLC, though... I guess I'm ultimately saying, also, that I wish they never pursued alleged procedural planet exploration and would've instead invested in making their open worlds alive, particularly with vehicle combat. Rather than explore endless, random, pretty but barren planets, investing more deeply in gameplay would've been so much more satisfying. Depth means much more than breadth.

At first that bothered me too as I instinctively tried to fire but now it's not a big deal. Only thing I don't like is there is no damage to enemies if you hit them. Luckily there's a mod for that.

I really don't think this one feature that could have just as easily annoyed players would have "saved" the game. If anything removing features so they could focus on the problems with the game is what would have "saved" the game.

I don't really know how hard it is to mod games but i'd definitely play MEA again if someone swapped the Nomad for the Mako, main gun and all.

Nothing like hitting a small bump flipping the Mako and then skidding down a mountain on your roof until you exploded.

Especially on the PC using a gaming keypad and mouse. I must've experimented a dozen ways to make it feel natural and to no avail. The Hammerhead on the other hand, I miss. Yeah, it was made of aluminum foil but I never had it blown up by enemies.

Lol wat. Never even had the Mako take any damage from flipping over, or from whatever height you fell from... Thing was a beast.

Lol wat. Never even had the Mako take any damage from flipping over, or from whatever height you fell from... Thing was a beast. The most damage the Mako ever took out of combat for me is the front right tire going red. I've climbed really high and steep mountains only to turn unexpectedly and come crashing down. Never once blew up out of combat. I still hate it.

I actually liked the Nomad. Just wish we could've purchased an in-game upgrade that would've extended the acceleration to a more fittingly ridiculous amount of time. Then again, I would've loved Ryder just standing on a cliff and watching enemy or colony Nomads racing around, too. Even if it was just a handful of them.

Idk, it took awhile, but I eventually got used to it, but there were several times I found myself, like a cantankerous old man, going "The Mako would never do this," and not in a good way. I just like the Mako better. It had weird-ass controls but at least it was dynamic. The Nomad is useful for getting place to place since I'm lazy enough to hate the toggle button and Ryder has the jogging speed of a beached whale, but it's not particularly fun and/or interesting.

It's going to be fun trying to get the Hang Time achievement with the Nomad. I detest having to control it with the keyboard especially before having bought the vehicle mods. Sometimes it feels like the old versions of the Colin McRae Rally game without the navigational pointers.
I've had a few good laughs, going up really steep mountains, not being able to prevent the thing accelerating backward all the way back down and surviving (even the S/W button didn't work as a brake due to the speed) lol

Logically, it would have made sense for the nomad to be armed with something to defend itself, especially with exploring foreign planets and landscapes....that goes double for the Tempest...not sure where the logic fell off in that front.
But i guess they shelved it when they figured that players would just troll the enemies by blasting them at drop points within certain battle set- pieces.....and players would have complained if the game automatically made you get out to fight enemies at those set-pieces. I never complained tho, as the game gives you the option to get out and fight or blaze by them....most of the time those locations involved re-spawning enemies which were a pain and i would just ignore them after i explored that location initially.
It doesn't seem like the nomad would be able to take on alot of damage anyway if they included vehicle combat and probably would have been more annoying than enjoyable. Even in the game now, the nomad can't take much enemy fire without you having to get out anyway....

Vehicle battles would probably be best left to rare encounters on the field, or else it would become extremely tiresome, especially if we're talking about aerial vehicles. The last thing we need is to get chased down by air assaults left and right. Of course, the worlds might have to be significantly redesigned to accommodate it. You can't go out into huge open areas with the constant risk of getting blasted from miles off by some tank or have zero cover while hostile fighters or shuttles dive-bomb the shit out of you.
Heck I wish that there were fewer hostile wildlife on the field. Aside from the fact that these little fuckers give no XP, shooting bugs and cloaking chameleons from hell isn't exactly a favorite past time.

I didn't really mind the Nomad lacking guns, but turning it into the Batmobile sounds too appealing..
As long as it comes in black.

The problem of vehicle combats is to be very basic and repetitive in comparison of a good shooting, and the Mako was a perfect example to show it, but also ME1 shooting combats aren't as good that other ME.
