I have trouble sometimes in open worlds keeping the little bits of story we get connected with the proper "other bits" and thought I'd start a thread as a collection point for such queries.
My current question is about an area Ryder stumbles across in between Site 1 and Site 2 on Eos. He indicates that someone has built up a home here and when walking around that area talks about following a path of alien tech. I see no real path to follow and no quest pops up in the journal. Does anyone know what quest or task this bit of dialogue is connect with?

That's PeeBee's camp and if you follow the path, it leads you to the monolith where you meet her. She has tech set up around site 2 (same tech you find on top of the monolith). PeeBee is also the "crazy blue" buyer Clancy mentions when you buy things from him.

Thanks, I get stymied by the radiation, so I didn't investigate Site 2 until after I had clearly the sky (but before actually going to Fairwinds Basin to trigger the outpost deployment)... so that's where that bit of info is getting disconnected from its story line.

Glad to help! It's been 4 months since the game came out and only now I realized you could search that camp and learn of PeeBee's activities lol same with Engineer Lito. If you find her datapad during "Doesn't Add Up" and you haven't talked to Bradley yet, you can tell him about her and he'll say he's happy to have her back on Eos. Later she'll help you during Liam's mission!

Here's another encounter where I'm not getting any indication of a possible quest, yet it seems like it should be part of something else. I got turned around on the map trying to get to Fairwinds Basin and drove into a cave where there was a bunch of Kett. Just as the fight started, either Cora or Vetra asked Ryder if he thinks they (i.e. the kett) found the Salarian Ark). I was expected some sort of quest to come up in the journal then after the battle finished and I looted the cave... nothing. Should I backtrack and avoid this encounter (expecting to be sent to this location from somewhere else)... or, alternatively, what am I missing that triggers a quest here?

You find hints of the Turian Ark on Kadara too. If you listen to the audio log in the cave, they captured a Salarian. This is hinting at what's to come on the flagship. That's the fun of exploring in this game. Every little thing you stumble upon will have a big revelation later in the main plot!

I've been worrying about triggering areas that belong as parts of other quests.

I've been worrying about triggering areas that belong as parts of other quests. Don't worry! You can't really do that. You just find clues of things to come, but you can only trigger the main story by continuing it. For example, I skipped Voled quests and saved the Moshae first, and when I returned to Voled, everyone was praising me for saving the Moshae and talking about Exaltation, so it changes with the choices you make.
