Hi good folks. I am not sure if there is a way to fix it, but somehow by some reason my ME3 reset itself to normal difficulty from casual. I was trying to clear early sidequests, and I absolutely cannot get through the Grissholm Atrium battle with masses and masses on my poor level 30 default gear character. I tried dropping it to narrative, to casual, but it keeps getting back to normal. I have restarted the game, and it did not help. Anything for it, but to abandon the mission and replay from an earlier save to pick something... Less dramatic? Do I now have no choice but to play on normal or something? Was mass effect 3 erm... debugged?

I don't have an answer as to why it switched to normal like that, but I can help you get through the atrium.
As soon as the door opens, run to the right to the end. There will be a shield generator. Destroy it. Now crouch behind cover while shooting the baddies. Also take out the shield generator at the bottom where all the baddies are. While doing this, 2 shield guys will approach you from the right that came through the door. Kill them quickly. Now finish off the rest of the baddies. Take care of the atlas as well. One of the squadmates will make a comment about the coast being clear. Move to the bottom where you destroyed that shield generator. Go through that door and head to the left. Sanders will talk on the comms. Once you head out the next door, look to your 2o'clock. You will see an engineer getting ready to setup a mini-me turret. Kill him. Once he's taken care of, head to the left of the door you exited and go up the stairs. At that point you will encounter 2 more shield guys. Take them out. Stay in cover since there will be an engineer setting up another mini-me turret near that spot. Have the squadmates kill him. Once done, take care of the rest that are down below. Remember, the students are above you helping fight Cerberus. Once done, exit the atrium to the next area.
At the end, kill the engineer and hijack the atlas. Kill the Cerberus guys. Head to where the students are and turn around to see all the Cerberus guys are. Kill them with the atlas by moving left or right. Keep doing this until you see another atlas. Destroy it. Now leave your robot and head to the shuttle.
Congratulations. You have now complete Grissom on normal.

@domi Put that into the bug list thread. Someone might have run into that issue before. I'm trying to keep track of any and all bugs that can happen in ME in one spot.

I came prepared wth my, "Are you sure it's not still set to Insanity? ME3 Insanity is the new Normal", shtick. I guess it isn't appropriate, in this case.
@domi , on which platform are you playing? I've never heard of this happening. I've been playing ME3 virtually nonstop since release and have never experienced such issues. Are you playing with the latest updates/patches?
Edit: I didn't realize there is a dedicated thread. That's even better. Thanks for the heads up, Natashina.

No problem. RedCaesar managed the grab the OP of the thread on the old BSN. We've needed a place for that. We'll really need it once the BSN goes away for good next month.

Typically you cannot change difficulty mid-combat encouner, so that may be a reason why it seems to keep changing. Not sure when you are attempting to change the difficulty. To further themikefests' advice, This video on YouTube also breaks that fight down for you. It is on Insanity difficulty, but the steps are the same. He takes out the Atlas mech first, but you can avoid that if you immediately head up to the right like themikefest suggests.

Anything for it, but to abandon the mission and replay from an earlier save to pick something... Less dramatic? Do I now have no choice but to play on normal or something? Was mass effect 3 erm... debugged? When changing controls in ME3, it's a little different than in ME1 (where you confirmed your changes, using A on the Xbox, before exiting). In ME3, be sure to just BACK (B on the Xbox) out of the screen when making your changes. On the Xbox, for example, hitting "X" (as though to confirm your settings) will reset the settings to the defaults. If your doing that part correctly, then it might be as Red is suggesting, that it's refusing to change the settings mid-battle. From the Load menu, try to select "Restart Mission" and then change the difficultly before you do anything else in the mission. If that doesn't work, try doing it just after Shepard finishes talking with Kahlee Sanders (since I think the Grissom mission may start you in an immediate battle as well - ETA: just check that part out, you don't actually start the mission in battle, so changing the difficulty at the start of the mission after a restart is holding on the Xbox). I just found an old save at the point of just starting Grissom and will test out trying to change the difficulty settings at different points to see if they hold or revert on me. ETA: Battle in classroom... started in on Hardcore and changed setting to Casual after battle had started. Battle itself was found at Hardcore difficulty (since the enemies has already spawned), but the setting was showing Casual when I checked it after the battle had completed. ETA: Difficulty level does appear to be reverting to normal just after talking with Jack (even though I haven't selected Normal during any part of this run). This has to be a bug. Can others check this out. I'm currently running it through again to see if it happens again. ETA: This time the setting is holding at "Narrative" (which is as it should be). Not sure what happened the first time... maybe I accidentally bumped it over when I opened the menu last time.
