If Multiplayer is to continue with the franchise, I think it's about time we ditched the Rank I to Rank X system. I understand that the system likely appeals to an audience that likes the grind to a fault, but in the long run it can lead to a lot of fatigue for people. It's a personal opinion, but I imagine for most people, the excitement of getting a reward from a loot pack only comes at Rank I (i.e. getting a new item) and Rank X (i.e. finally getting that item to max and out of the way for new gear). That gulf in between can be repetitive at times, and downright brutal with Ultra Rares. This problem has been exacerbated in ME:A, due to skill points for characters now being linked to the rank of said character. I know it's easy to say that skill points should not have been tied to character rank (which I agree on), but it just shows the absurdity of the system.
We need a system that doesn't revolve around maxing out gear, but instead about getting new items and gear that provides more build variety. Build variety is one of the most beneficial aspects of the games multiplayer, and what allowed players to continue playing the mode for hundreds of hours on end. Of course, this is also aided by having numerous characters, weapons, and gear to play with as well. Rather than attempting to get an item (be it weapons, equipment, or characters) to max rank, we should instead be able to max the stats of these items by simply playing. Do you enjoy using the Dahn? Play a bunch of games with it, and if you - for example - get enough points with it, you'll eventually reach max stats with the weapon. In this way, it feels less artificial; in a manner similar to leveling up a character.
As far as making up for the loot deficit, I feel as though this is where the mechanic of augments comes in. The Augment system - as a mechanic - not only provides the possibilities for better build variety, but also satisfies the need to grind for gear that'll make you better overall. Depending on the rarity - and type - of augment, it could drastically alter your playstyle. Imagine having the option to use the augment that increases recharge speed cooldowns by 50%, but reduces weapon damage by 30%. This type of augment allows for a build style centered upon casting powers left and right, and completely shifts your way of playing. Not only should augments alter the base stats of your characters abilities, but they could also alter the function of abilities themselves. In Dragon Age: Multiplayer, the player could receive Rings that boosted the damage, or slightly altered, a particular ability. This could be expanded upon in Mass Effect Multiplayer. Do you like using Nova? Maybe you could strike lucky and get an Augment that increases its radius by 30%. A more drastic alteration would allow the ability to deal significantly more damage, but in a significantly smaller area. And of course, the same would apply to weapons as well; which we already see in-game.
Having this type of system would help in breaking up the monotony of seeing the same items over and over again, and could possibly add more worthwhile longevity to the game mode.

Wonder what they will do with Anthem.
It seemed like they are going to follow the footstep of Destiny games.
Receiving reward directly by playing the game.
This is probably better way to go.

I am not sure if there will be a sequel to try this out in, nor am I sure that they have the right kind of people to make this work...

Would you mind elaborating? I don't play Destiny. I tried, but my old man reflexes and aiming aren't up to the task (Overload is my favorite power). I'm under the impression that it had a loot-dropping system like Diablo or Borderlands.

i don't remember much but it's similar to deeper into ruin apex mission.
while u battle through the map u pick up new gears and receive new gears at the end of the game
the roots vary by ur level & difficulty
i think it's similar to borderland except borderland is more of an open world game

Trust me, Dragon Age had a system like the one you are suggesting and it was far worse.

I actually like the I to X system for weapons only. I only wish it was better implemented. I get it about the ranks being "meaningful" and all, but I think it should be more of a "completionist" type of thing.
If I unlocked a certain weapon, meaningful stats should be consistent through all the ranks. The damage, RoF, Mag size and maybe even accuracy should remain the same from rank I to X imo. That way you know from the get go how useful/useless is that specific gun, otherwise it's guessing until you have it at X and you can finally give the verdict. Ranks should benefit in secondary stats like spare ammo and weight.

BSN:The grind equates to more money $ being spend on Andromeda points; which OCD types are likely to do.

Trust me, Dragon Age had a system like the one you are suggesting and it was far worse. I played Dragon Age Multiplayer (for several hundred hours in fact). The problem with that game was that they made the drops rates abysmal (due to loot score), and many of the high tier weapons forced you to keep killing the Dragon over and over again. Still enjoyed fighting Commander Druffy though.

Wonder what they will do with Anthem. It seemed like they are going to follow the footstep of Destiny games. Receiving reward directly by playing the game. This is probably better way to go. Would you mind elaborating? I don't play Destiny. I tried, but my old man reflexes and aiming aren't up to the task (Overload is my favorite power). I'm under the impression that it had a loot-dropping system like Diablo or Borderlands. Destiny is a complicated game to explain... however, you get random loot for completing things, and not always guaranteed loot. It's not like Mass Effect where you save money to buy packs and hope for things. You play co-op content each week with differing chances at getting something good. The highest coop content is a Raid (6 man coop event), where the bosses will drop some gear. What they drop is random, but you can only do that once a week. Then on Tuesday, the world "resets" and you can run that Raid again the following week at chances for different gear. They have coop strike missions (3 players), which are shorter 10-15 minute missions. The guaranteed loot is horrible, but the end boss has a chance of dropping something decent. You can play these over and over again. Then there is Nightfall... a rotating list of strike missions with harder modifiers. You're guaranteed a better reward than a strike mission, but like a Raid, it's only available once a week. So get something this week, play Nightfall again next week. Think of it like the Apex mission here that changes weekly, but with an actual reward. You can also play PvP, which can also drop rewards. In addition to all the random items you may get, the game has quests to get specific items. Complete 10 tasks to guarantee you a sword, or a rocket, or a gun etc. You know what the end reward is for that quest, so there is no guessing involved. Rewards as part of quests, are not part of the random drops. You have to actually complete the quests to get this stuff. And unlike ME with multiple characters to play at any time, Destiny has 3 characters. So all the weekly stuff that I mentioned, can be done on the 3 characters. Most people run their 3 raids a week, 3 nightfalls a week, the PvP part of the game offers a reward for playing per week and that also can be done by the 3 characters.

Adding on to what Loco said.. there are also vendors who sell some pretty solid legendary gear, and one vendor who sells exotic (the best) gear but he's only available on Friday/Saturday. The currency you use to buy these items is acquired just by playing the game.
There's a million ways to get gear in Destiny. The perks are RNG, so you might get a gun you want but with shit perks. You can reroll the perks though..
It's an infinitely better game than MEA.. but wasn't that way at launch.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if characters and mods were still I-V. Oh, and no characters should be Ultra-rare. That was a joke in ME3. They weren't really Ultra-rare.

It's time to move on from "Bioware", like the people who made the company what it was have. DA: I was a resounding argument....ME:A is the definitive proof.
