Try reading the Mass Effect Wikia masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Mass_Effect_Wiki. It's a must to every fan of Mass Effect. Lore content without any kind of crazy/stupid fan theory. That being said, just like with the Alliance is possible that Cerberus also had infiltrators inside those big corporations or as stated before they were fronts for cerberus. In ME1 Shepard finds them doing experiments on rachni, dragon's teeth/husks, thorian creepers, thresher maws...

Interesting idea. Not impossible, but I don't think Cerberus had officially split from the Alliance (it seemed to be a recent thing in ME1) when the tests happened. But, as one of those door guards said regarding black ops, "if you have to deny the action it's a crappy action" (or something to that effect). You might be right. Akuze was long enough ago that Cerberus was probably still part of the Alliance. So that would basically say (ie confirm) then that it was indeed the Alliance that ordered Toombs to be captured and tested; since, at that time, Cerberus was still part of the Alliance. It seems the Alliance may not be any "cleaner" or "better" than Cerberus then... or is it possibly the event that caused the split? The Wiki seems to indicate that the manifesto for Cerberus appeared right after the end of the First Contact War and that Cerberus was engaged in terrorism as early as 2165 (12 years before the events on Akuze in 2177). It seems too long a time for Cerberus scientists (as identified by Toombs) to be identified by Hackett as being both ex-Alliance and engaged in a "classified project" [for the Alliance?] if Cerberus was just acting on their own (i.e. without Alliance support or direction) when they captured Toombs. It just doesn't add up... not to mentiion that the Marines were sent into Akuze by the Alliance to investigate the colony falling out of communication... which would hardly be easily described as a "classified project" involving Alliance scientists.

I think you guys are going to like this. I'm on planet Joab in ME2, doing a sidequest where you need to investigate a dig site that's been overrun by the Blue Suns. Cerberus has asked Shep to take care of it to protect their personal interests. I came into the first room and found this on a computer: What kind of dig site was it? Prothean. A video log is at the end of the area and Shep has another vision of the Reapers. More proof that Cerberus and ExoGeni were in bed together to one extent or the other, at least to me. I mean, c'mon! Interest in both organic-based mind control and in the Protheans? Way too big of a coincidence. Nice catch! I've read that datapad many times and just not noticed that Farrin was from ExoGeni and that Cerberus asks Shep to go there to protect their personal interests (actually still can't find this reference from Cerberus with respect to the Joab mission). However, Farrin is writing Santiago (head of the Blue Suns) so it seems to be suggesting that ExoGeni might be in the process of stabbing Cerberus in the back... or it might mean that Cerberus just wants to grab the Prothean artifact from the "competitor" who found it (i.e. ExoGeni). Ignore next post below... I quoted myself instead of doing an edit. Sorry.
