I mean, it's only one of the most famous phrases from the Aeneid. *pushed thick, black-rimmed glasses up on nose while snort-laughing* We have a veritable historic references bonanza today. I'm just back from reading up a brief history of cannons because I just had to know how long it took to load one in 19th century specifically. playing this coop requires liberal education, darn it.

No, that would be "Victory Favors the Bald." Yes, yes, it was a play on homophones. I am witty like that. When / win; would / wood; no / know = homophones. Bold / bald = words that share some letters. I am pedantic like that.

They sound exactly the same to me. My ear does not pick up on the finer distinctions between the vowels that the Anglophones do. It's all "ow" to me An ESL handicap. But When and Win are two different vowels completely to my ear, "eh" and "YH" ????

In common speech the h in when is unpronounced, at least in American English.

Oh, I've been doing everything in English for 20 years now, and I've been through three accent reduction courses, but a/o's I can't hear, which is fairly typical for us & harder than keeping our tongue between our teeth (which is what most commonly parodied). I am aware that H is mute in wh, I just put "eh" there for it not to be an eeeee, heh. My native tongue is Russian, but now it's accented too, and archaic & when I hear it on TV, it sounds very odd to me. So, yeah, I have two languages, both scrambled.

I feel your pain, in reverse; some aspects of Russian gave me trouble. Took me a long time to get the pronunciation of "ы" right when it was not reduced, and I never really managed to properly pronounce "щ" in most words.

When and Win only rhyme (homophones) in the South or with some kind of hick accent.
Bald and Bold never rhyme under any English accent that I am familiar with.
