Hello all. Been a while since I was back here and WOAH that's... a whole lotta pages to read through. Dayum. Read something about descriptive writing a couple of pages back, about how three pages later it was still rambling on? It begs the question, how much description is needed for a place? I'm speaking in context of Andromeda, where currently I'm working on writing the Eos vault. I mean, there's only so much you can talk about Remnant tech being all black stone and blue lines. And speaking of Andromeda - I'm really uncomfortable with asking this - can anyone here just take a quick gander at my fic and... leave any constructive comments here? I mean, I'm still pushing out chapters irregularly from time to time if my schedule allows it, but the very distinct lack of reviews somehow leaves me awake at night wondering if it was all worth putting down through my keyboard. Had a few rough weeks from my parents telling me writing's a waste of time. It's kinda of disheartening to wake up every day and push myself to write and update, having no idea if people liked my fic or not. Well, I guess that's all I have to say, I suppose. Trying to keep my chin up and continue hammering something out. P.S. oh deer, are you ohdeer2016 from FFN? If so, hi!

Trying to keep my chin up and continue hammering something out. P.S. oh deer, are you ohdeer2016 from FFN? If so, hi! Heya, writing is a hobby like any other - if you enjoy it, you do it. The value of it for your spiritual and mental state is the same as the value of excersise for your body. Yet I have never heard anyone tell another that going to a gym or to a church is a waste of time. Just because you do not go to a Writting Sanctuary and pay money to participate in this activity, or because it does not pay, does not meant it is not valuable for you as an individual. It goes without saying that if your parents have a different reason to criticize your time budgeting, it is better address the root cause of the disagreement than argue about the value of writting as a pastime. In terms of commenting, I would be happy to exchange with you (or anyone for that matter) writting comments on Critters rules, 200 words of plot/txtclarity/what works what does not, etc or more per 4-5K words of text if you want. But if you are looking for interactions with your actual readers on a fanfiction website, well, it’s tricky to predict. Sometimes really good stories get no comments, sometimes they do. I usually judge the success by reader retention, I.e how many readers clicked on each subsequent chapter. That would give you idea how many were interested enough to keep reading, hence presumably liked it. Very few writers, fanfiction or published get love and recognition and hype.

Anyway, wrote a good chunk of Chapter 6, climbing to about a middle of it, changing it up slightly as I went from the outline. The word count ended up at about 2.2K, with two major scenes/plot nodes I still have not even started on... I am glad I am moving forward, but by golly, I want to see it finished. Of course, with the changes to the story, Chapter 7 needs major re-writes from a short story it once was, but hey, I will deal with it after I finish the blessed chapter 6. The wedding scene in particular is going to be hard, I think. I am not great with large groups of characters and environments, I am way more comfortable with dialogues and inner monologues, one person's actions kind of thing.

I can't believe I only discovered this thread now! Well, hi everyone, my name is Gwyvian (at least here it is), I'm a writer. I write novels, short stories, poetry, articles, academic stuff and most importantly to this discussion on this particular board: MEA fanfiction. I had a great deal of success with my first one (now finished), my second is a little less popular (unusual pairing) and I just had a hiatus spanning many months because of illness. I just posted a new chapter for my second fic and I come back to a world where MEA has been declared a failure, it was announced that there will be no DLC's and not only are my favorite threads where I had fans until now dead as a doornail, my friends aren't responding and I'm left wondering if there's any point to my continuing - i.e. my readership has been dramatically reduced since I got back. I mean, I did just get a nice comment! I did get a handful of likes! I'll go on for that alone, but I'm wondering if there's a better way to reach readers who may be interested in my unusual pairings than what I'm already doing - thoughts, anyone? (FYI I post my stuff both on Tumblr and AO3 with I think a good collection of tags, plus I throw it out there on other social media sometimes with pretty much zero success and I have a taglist here on BSN II, that's the whole of my master plan currently.) Also, how do you guys read the fanfiction market now, are regular pairings still going strong at least? I got lucky and picked a pairing that for that time brought relatively speaking a lot of interest, considering I had no visible fanfiction history online since many years, it's the first ME I've written and I had zero fans to start, but I'm wondering if the overall MEA river is still flowing at all? I have a great idea for a new story in addition to my current fic, but I've got to actually work and pay bills and stuff, so I have to be selective about what I spend hours and hours of my sleep time on.

Welcome! Afraid the Andromeda scene as a whole is probably dead (in my opinion, at least, don't take it seriously ). Just the few stalwarts manning the turrets and blowing dust off the omnitools. I notice that pairing fics seem to be doing alright, though.

I have a great idea for a new story in addition to my current fic, but I've got to actually work and pay bills and stuff, so I have to be selective about what I spend hours and hours of my sleep time on. My first time in this thread, too!! The fanfiction market is tricky and sooo different from when I first started, circa 2007. Back then everyone was on LiveJournal, so as long as you found the appropriate community and were a decent writer, you could easily rack up 40-50 comments per chapter. Then people slowly started linking to FFN, and, of course, later came A03 and Tumblr. Now things are so spread out that it's hard to build a community of like-minded fans, and if you write rare pairings... forget it. I wrote a 10 chapter 50K Skyrim fanfic and basically had the same three people leaving comments for each chapter, bless them. They are the only reason I finished the fic, even though I was enjoying it immensely and personally feel it's a really good fic! But it was so hard writing it and putting so much heart and soul into it and feeling like no one else really cared (other than three people). I wrote a Jaal x m!Ryder fic recently, and posted it to AO3; it got four comments I think? It was just a silly little one-shot. But still, I was rather ecstatic to get four comments LOL I was anticipating none. (Partly because Jaal x f!Ryder is more popular, and partly because of the community issue I mentioned above). Now, because I like pain I guess, I am working on a long Barris x m!Lavellan fic. If I get a single comment on what is probably going to be a 20-30K fic I'll be relieved. But I couldn't NOT write the story; it was just begging to come out of me. Alas.

I finally threw out the revamped chapter 10 of the sequel to the MET fanfic. Just before Christmas, a neat tie off to the year.

Welcome! Afraid the Andromeda scene as a whole is probably dead (in my opinion, at least, don't take it seriously ). Just the few stalwarts manning the turrets and blowing dust off the omnitools. I notice that pairing fics seem to be doing alright, though. Thank you! Well all jokes aside, I'm afraid I'm kind of getting that impression, too; not that I have a great perspective, right now I'm working on a seriously niche pairing fic, but back when I started it (before the announcement) I got way more hits even for this, now I'm happy if I hit ten days after posting. I'm kind of hoping the sequel to my first, less niche fic will draw people out anyway since that garnered a lot of fans who wanted something other than what MEA itself could give. I mean, I'm not complaining, if 6 people are going to read my new chapters, I'm enjoying it enough that I don't mind writing it for those 6. It's more that I'm increasingly disappointed that the MEA world seems to have just been abandoned by many because of the no DLC news; I know it sucks, but the fact shouldn't take away from the creative drive that the base game gave all those people writing/drawing and reading/appreciating - it was really nice. My first time in this thread, too!! The fanfiction market is tricky and sooo different from when I first started, circa 2007. Back then everyone was on LiveJournal, so as long as you found the appropriate community and were a decent writer, you could easily rack up 40-50 comments per chapter. But I couldn't NOT write the story; it was just begging to come out of me. Alas. Welcome to you, too! Yeah, I know what you mean, it's hard to justify going on when it feels like there's no one out there who appreciates what you've done; and I agree, I'm pretty much doing that now, writing for a handful of readers who are still sticking around, I still feel warm and fuzzy if I only get 1 comment. I'd love more, though, of course. I had the opposite experience in terms of readership in the past, I used to write fanfics around 8-9 years ago and I was posting on a forum back then (a very specialized forum, granted) and I had a handful of loyal fans, but nothing fancy. When I got back into it over this past year it was a totally different scene and the first fic I wrote got so much attention (relatively speaking), especially considering that it wasn't a popular pairing, and I got tons of great comments - all great comments, which I'm still amazed by. Nothing like what you are describing, of course; I get that problem, that it's all spread out now. I've tried to get around that by posting in multiple places at once and that seems to have at least reached more readers collectively speaking, so you could say it's a success - but of course, if no one is interested in MEA anymore, it doesn't matter. I was happy with this whole process - ecstatic, actually, they really aren't "mainstream" pairings - and I was so happy to come back to it finally now that I feel strong enough to do it again, but it looks like the market molted again and took on yet another shape. Hey, I'm not going to let that stop me! I'm going to finish these two I've got open, write the third I planned way back when and we'll just have to see if interest in MEA comes back or not. I've got novels to work on, anyway.

I think I have brought up the name before but Eric Flint is a really good author and honestly seemingly a businessman, he has created an interconnected universe involving several different authors that makes it very hard to keep up with. Oh well maybe one day.

Okay, I sort of resolved my difficulty with writting the wedding scene by not writting it, since I reasoned if I find it boring to write, it surely will be even more boring to read. So, I am now fighting the transition because I am cutting down what used to be atheist very first short story that started it all and then was supposed to become Chapter 7 into Chapter 6. On the upside, my last major character now first appears in a Chapter 6, the downside is the transition. I keep writting those sort of links in that summarize stuff instead of dramatizing them between the scenes that come together...
I am going to be so happy to get through this chapter....

So recently I wrote my first big battle chapter ever for this run of books. Actually took me two chapters to write... but the funny thing while the first chapter was really about the Battle at large and featured a lot of jumping around the second one ended up being much more focused on one character. ..the protagonist.

Actually took me two chapters to write... but the funny thing while the first chapter was really about the Battle at large and featured a lot of jumping around the second one ended up being much more focused on one character. ..the protagonist. That is great. I find it hard to read when people write the battles and switch actions among their entire cast of 5-6 characters, particularly when the enemies remain generic. I find that the passages like: John skewered three skeletons with his spear, while Jane cast a magic spell exploding one more skeleton, James caught the skull of one of the skeletons that John skewered and used it as a bowling ball to drop two skeletons like bowling pins... sort of hard to read. in "me" news: I am done with one of the two dialogues that will transition me into the clear to finish the accursed Chapter 6. I have managed to eliminate the mid-chapter PoV switch that I did not like, and narrate the whole thing from the single PoV. It is still be awkward, but the alternative was terrible. I am also rethinking the overall timeline, and will probably need inserting a year of "bad stuff was unfolding" between chapters 7 and 8, to be more "realistic". I am a bit invigorated by reading Critters submissions this week, hoping to be done with comments on a couple more submissions & get that dialogue at least outlined all by Wednesday, because I want to be done with this blessed chapter. I always get blown away when I see people posting chapters on Critters commenting that the whole thing is 100K+ words... blows my mind.

I am extremely relieved to share that things went as planned, and I finished Chapter 6 & prepped the sequence of 7, 8 and 9 for writing. I have 9 written as a short story, and I went over the 7 and 8 outlines checking for consistency and adding a couple of links to the newer ideas that got captured in sixth, or had to be kicked out of the sixth.
Also, found a small expert of an old, very short story that I know I did finish, and now it drives me nuts... I want to find the finished version and add it to my Google docs storage! If I don’t find it, I am afraid I will have to rewrite it or go mad.
Cheers and much inspiration, guys. We need it!

Not to jinx it (knock on wood!), but the next chapter is going well. Even though I ended up writing it from a different PoV than I initially planned. I am just more fascinated by what is going on in that one, I suppose.

I decided to take a break from my novella until I can get enough of: "I don't care that it is boring" and re-write that old short story. Next week another chapter goes up for critters and, well, I want to have my tiny short story to post for the next round instead of the next chapter.

It's been a while since I updated everyone but I am now up to chapter nineteen on my second novel. God seems like only yesterday that I even started. Right now worried being too repitious but hey I can hope?
Book 1 me and my fiancé are on chapter 30.

Re-edited a little of the novella after getting a couple of helpful reviews for Ch3 from Critters (and one of the sort that makes you want to finish writing it just to show them you f**g can). I think a break did me good, because it is easier to work on it now. I hope to pick up the Ch7 again. I already put that old short in the queue after the Ch3, so I don't have to worry about preparing Ch4 for a few weeks. but I gave it a quick edit anyway, before doing a serious one.
The short story also is going along nicely, though I need a think about shortening the mid-section.

Ok so two things. 1. I bought this book: www.amazon.com/Creating-Character-Arcs-Workbook-Exceptional-ebook/dp/B075SYFND9/ref=pd_sim_351_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=KZPX9NRDZCMFKMHQYT9Z I have not started reading it yet, but I am intrigued that it apparently is a part of an...at least eight book...series. Starting with this one because, to be blunt, I am a bit of a character whore. Characters are what I prefer in my stories and I prefer character growth and continuity to almost any other element of writing and think characters make stories memorable that and...I have my own ideas about things like structuring and outlining...BUT...I may get to the others eventually. The second thing is I have been using Google Docs to write my...well novels. Just, my novel is a bit long in one title...its lagging a bit as I write it. so now I have to do it chapter by chapter, which is not a bad thing, may actually help in the future, just might also be hard to organize them all. We'll see.

Huh I wondered if there was such a thread, didn't look hard enough it seems Well in any event I'll just drop this here... www.fanfiction.net/s/12557605/1/The-Time-Displaced-SithMy Star Wars story I'm working on, not perfect by any means. I'm probably most pleased with chapter 15 thus far as that was a pain to get right. ::crawls back under his rock::

So I have writer's block over this; archiveofourown.org/works/13580031/chapters/31169391Considering I'm not sure what to do after the third page (I was thinking about family relations, but.... well they're so young that i'd have to age them up by several years...and maybe a Rhaegar chapter? Meh, but he's so boring and dull tho, that idk.) I've always had problems after a third page anyhow.
