I think it is reasonable to assert that people would grind under my proposed system. I think it is also reasonable to assert people grind under the current system.
What I am proposing though is a system that makes the grinding more rewarding, because everything you open is at least useful. Think of it this way - single player has a crafting system. Do people only ever play the single kit and weapon they think is numerically superior, no matter how thin the margins? No, people try all kinds of things. I think they would in MP also. (Well, I certainly would.)

Well, I am only a noob, but what I see is that my 20/XX character performs way better than when he was 1/I, and a gun at LX is much better than at LI. I'd certainly break down each and every SR to max out something I actually use, because I will use SR never. It might not be a MMO, but under a focused crafting system, I'd dump everything into a Main that is as low card as possible with the gun that is the biggest bang for the buck (and that I can shoot), push it to as high level as I could play as fast as I can (for me it's Gold) and keep playing Gold on that character at that point, dumping everything into the next bestest gun for him & saving the credits for the upcoming bestest kit.
I like playing VGS. So, I push the basic H!Guard into Gold breaking down all Silver cards to max out his Disciple (silver Shotgun). Then break everything down and pump all MFs, all crafting mats into a Shotgun of note - let's call it The Bestest Shotgun. With whatever one of the triplets that is good? Get that. Then play Dailies/Gold, stash and sit on it till Batguard is out. Pump everything in the Batguard. Then buy XP cards and start maxing out kits for level 6 bonuses w whatever gears I can throw on them. Once maxed, go back to play Batguard.
That's what I'd do if the crafting system was in place today, that would be my full progression curve. (Shrug)
I'm sorry, I thought you said you played this game because you enjoy playing and maxing your manifest doesn't matter to you? So why would you be worried about finding the most effective weapon/character combination and then put all your effort into maxing those to the exclusion of everything else so you could clear the highest difficulty as quickly as possible? I must be missing something. And no, your level X disciple deals only ~25% more damage than it did at level I, and the difference decreases as rarity increases. A level 20 character is much better than at level 1, but that's irrelevant because you don't need packs to level up. A rank X character is much better than a rank I, but not much worse than a rank XX. An optional crafting system is only a problem because you think it would "force" you to use it to craft min-maxed configurations, but there is no such need, because there is no content gating and no one is measuring your performance.

I play this way now, yes, because there is no practical way to min/max. If there is a way to min/max accessible to me, I would in a jiffy. But it would be a different game. Again, I prefer ME3mp way the most, and I dearly wish Andromeda replicated that.

Perhaps a poll would be nice, OP?

Hit "edit post" and in the top right corner of the post edit there will be an "add poll" button (the same works with the new post if you want to attract attention to the new poll) But I dunno, I feel the discussion is academic, because switching from extreme lateral to extreme vertical progression so far into the game seems unlikely?

Yeah, I'm not sure what a poll adds. It isn't scientific. My preference is that someone from Bioware reads some of this and is swayed by my brilliant arguments.
