Mage-SS-no-pot-solo-PT
Lower Ruins
Horde of Skeletons: Repulsion Glyph all the time, running in circles... Had to use bombs. After about another 10 attempts finally killed them all. -- Mage ghost with two greater shades: again many attempts; sometimes was close; in the end put on heavy armor for additional protection and everything, for the last shade used Bear - took damage though health regen seems rather high for that shade. -- Another horde of skeletons: repulsion glyph to help + running in circles. In the end for two last SnS skeletons used Spider. Bad dodges. -- Blakc Vials Revenant № 1: three attempts, the same strategy - was standing very close, casting spells, drinking lyrium. Put on Warden Commander Plate for armor and it helped as well as "Hex + Life Drain". --
The Lair
Half-mage/half Bear, died several times because of Shadow werewolves.
Black Vials Revenant №2: five attempts with the same strategy.
Zathrian Two attempts as during the first one shades were too active to knock me down. Spells for that fucking brainless selfish lying pos. Good riddance.
Encounter "Dark Forest": mostly spells, though had time to try Swarm and Spider. Nothing interesting, just watched the damage and attack.
-- Hit lvl 16 + 1 DEX + 2 MAG Curse of Mortality --
Went back to the forest to try again Mage's Treasure. Was ambushed by another stupid bitch: used Swarm. Was surprised could kill them all in that form; strange that mana regen was fast enough though got hits.
Tried to finish "Mage's Treasure" but failed: tried three Revenants and the outcome was always somewhere" half-close". Will return after lvl-up.
Wynne
First encounter: Wynne was killed (thought had put her on the nice spot distracting enemies, but one ranged asshole came down and did not notice that). Tried Swarm (was pushed back to human after some time) and Spider (killed everyone but the first three enemies in that form; at least here had good dodges with animation most of the time, got only one crit - 47).
Second encounter: all alive. Used lesser nature resist. Some spells for entourage. Swarm form for Omega, but life drain pushed back to human; after Spider - almost died if not for OV and poison. Last six enemies killed using Swarm divided - know they are weak, but was pretty funny. At least was not knocked back to a human.
Went to the Dalish to talk to the dalish asshole-storyteller and finished Wynne's quest. -- Tried again Mage's Treasure - nothing at all, even worse. Whatever.
Encounter "Bloody Plains": had it several times, but something always was not right. This time just fine. Sleep combo for Emissary. After Swarm form (killed almost everyone), Spider (though if not for health regen would have been dead).
------
Damage and crits (during several level-ups)
Numbers are in heavy armor with SnS
Bear Damage 30-40 Crits max 71 Noticed the bear started to "evade" attacks like spider now does
Spider Damage 20-35 Crits 40-60
Swarm Damage 13-26 ------
Think next will try some part of Orzammar (or all of it if can).

Mage-SS-no-pot-solo-PT
Orzammar
The Deep Roads
Caridin's Cross
Black Vials Revenant: bear form - max damage was 18; used the old-fashioned way 10 times in a row.
The Ogre: using something SS connected is just impossible due to his ram-spam all the time (as well as other ogres anyway).
-- lvl 17 + 2 MAG + 1 DEX Flaming Weapons (useless) --
Anyway almost the whole thaig cleared out in Swarm form, finishing some enemies as a bear (less spider) form. Used spells against mages (as they are cheaters) and ogres (can do nothing against ram-spam - it is always 100% hit).
Went back to sell the junk.
Ortan Thaig
Used all three forms, against several enemy spiders Swarm and Spider - both were good (maybe dumping points into DEX still works from time to time). Though the most useful SS form was Spider I guess, after Swarm, also Bear for finishing enemies off.
Asunder
One death sacraficed for checks. Swarm - fast push back to human Spider - dodges ftw + poison. Max damage - 15. Poison - 28 (with hex I suppose only as before was only 18). Bear - half - nice as only dodges helped. Max damage - 25. Max crit - 45. After pushed me back to human. Encounter went like that: spider - human - bear - human - spider - human - swarm (for 2 sec) - human (one swing and he is dead). Also used lesser cold/fire/spirit resists. Always resisted his spells. Was just standing near the demon and attacking him.
Killed two annoying golems with spells + running. The rest spirits with Swarm ---- funny how in Swarm form I got backcstab from the spirit ----
Corrupted Spider Queen
Against the queen used Spider mostly + Swarm. Killed however with spells. For entourage - spells only as always took too much damage (armor did not save me). Used two lesser nature resists.
Went back to sell the junk and turn in small quests.
Dead trenches
The bridge and Kardol: was lazy and just used Swarm form even with damage 8-18 (at least several enemies are affected); if got too many hits and with the Ogre just flew to Kardol. For Alpha used bear: one crit 70/damage about 35/attack half-good.
Ancient Darkspawn: spent 10 attempts trying to use SS form against him. Each form was good, but not good enough for enemy's good attack and great damage. Combined wth spells. Finished him as Spider. Not many dodges, damage is higher already even with this enemy. Attack is decent.
Forge Master: as he switches all the time melee/ranged, not difficult to try all SS forms. Damage is rather poor, though in Swarm form got additionl + 4-6 damage (?). Looked through Wiki and did not find additional information about weakness or something.
Gangue Shade: tried all three forms, but killed anyway with spells. Swarm is useless as pushed back right away to human. Spider/bear are alright (health regen helped), though that shade did not give a chance to turn into those forms with enough health (too much damage), and after even health regen did not help. Many resists, but my mage resisted almost to nothing.
Broodmother: tried SS forms but was the same as with above shade. So just spells, lyrium, 2 lesser nature resists.
Went back to sell junk.
Encounter "Dalish vs Darkspawn": spells
Bought the Andruil's Blessing belt.
Anvil of the Void
Hit lvl 18 when that bitch could not shut up.
-- lvl 18 + 3 MAG Survival 1 Fireball --
Tried in different parts SS forms but useless: spirits got healing quickly, golems are suitable for spells only.
Branka: thought the previous solo PTs were annoying. Only spells for everyone. Do not remember golems throwing stones all the time like in this case (no matter the distance). So much for spells. Spent half of the day with X attempts. Had to use many bombs and swift salve (2). Using something SS was out of the question.
Finished Topsider quest. Returned to Orzammar, turned in quests.

Yeah, sometimes it seems like you get several Hurls right at the start, sometimes none. I don't know how their tactics work exactly. All in all the Branka fight is pretty annoying for solo on several levels.

Mage-SS-no-pot-solo-PTOrzammarUnofficial Provings: group with AW replayed several times because of that AW asshole. Killed him in the end with spider OV. Encounter "Dwarves vs Darkspawn": spells Cadash Thaig: some Swarm action Did "Oghren's Old Flame". HavenIn the temple after getting the key got lvl 19 -- lvl 19+ 3 MAG Staff Focus (need spellpower) - though did not notice any changes at all -- Mages - spells Kolgrim - spells + Swarm + Spider Drakes - spells only (tried Swarm as well but fire is not what I need for my poor bugs) + and running if no corners to hide High Dragon: tried Swarm form only; tried to find some suitable places to attack, was flying around and it seemed the Dragon did not take any damage at all during those attempts. Strange. So - a mage with 1-2 lesser fire resist(s). DenerimTurned in some quests. Bought Felon's Coat and Evon's Plate. Odered "better armor". Finished "Interested parties": - first encounter just Swarm (damage about 30) and Spider (nothing changed) - last encounter: Swarms, K.was the last alive so tried Spider (dodges and evades all the time, damage is 25-35), Bear (nothing changed). Revenant: the same strategy. Tried "Unbound" but even with resists my spells almost did nothing. Did not even progressed to the Revenant form. Will come back later. Maybe my build is shitty. Last Request: tried all forms + spells. Somewhere there got lvl 20. Died there 15 times because of electro damage. -- lvl 20+ 3 MAG Arcane Mastery - as wanted Spellpower if it works at all. -- Ran around in Felon's Coat and Cadash Stompers - just to check (dex is good). FlemethUsual "kill - reload - just take the book and leave Flemeth alive". Had Wade's fireproof dragonbone armor (70 %). Tried Swarm again and had the same result as with Haven Dragon: did not notice any damage from me, but was kicked all the time into human again. So ran around as a mage. When Flemeth was almost dead used Spider form: was rather funny run quickly around with damage 8-10 and wind up on the back after her Roar. Killed - reload - took the book - gave to Morrigan. Encounter "Rebel Dwarves": two attempts with Swarm and Spider in the end. Went to the Dalish. Bought two Tomes there and had another one (forgot where got it).So: -- + 1 MAG Survival 2 Death Syphon -- Mage's Treasure: first tried with heavy armor - did not help. Changed to Felon's Coat and dodge boots - "miss-miss-miss". Two further Revenants: 2-3 attempts. The one with a mage - one attempt. Threw fireball to him. And lots of lyrium. Encounter "Abandoned Meadow": one lesser nature resist + one swift salve. Two attempts. Saved only three. In the end that mage and I just threw fireballs at each onther - that's just stupid. But I could resist fireball force, that asshole - never. No time to shift. "Unbound" (second attempt): when he turned into a mage put on everything with spell resist, when turned into a warrior - Felon's Coat and dodge. Also used all greater elemental resists. Two attempts but it worked just fine. And drank lyrium. -- Time for Redcliff: but how save people there? Read capn233 description - he had "heal" at least. I have only friendly fire spells. It seems no Helm for me. Yeah, sometimes it seems like you get several Hurls right at the start, sometimes none. I don't know how their tactics work exactly. Before got "Hurls" only if was far from golems, but very rare. Here it was just "Hurl Rain". The game still gives surprises.

Mage-SS-no-pot-solo-PT
Redcliffe
Triggered Alistair's quest. Before going to the bridge went to Denerim to finish Alistair's quest. Returned to Redcliffe.
-- Turned out in the camp could buy one Spell Tome (poor again, won't be able to finish some small quests in Redcliffe as wanted). Did not use it as wanted to see how night attack would be without any support spells. Though one shitty support spell for a bunch of people is not such an advantage. Without any help from GW someone from them will die anyway. Now at least think it's a waste of spell. Fighting with daggers will be more useful. We'll see. --
Did small quests. Finished Sten quest. Usual preparations.
-- Should have killed Lloyd to make night job easier, forgot and no saves --
Assault
Got the helmet. One attempt: one man was near death. Had to stop the game every second to watch for militia health. What helped - glyph of paralysis. SS is useless here in any case.
Now can use that spell tome for more useful spell (will use it later). Took in some quests and finished others.
Orlesian mass murderer whoring bitch popped up with her fables.
The Castle
Let Jowan go only because of his quest where I managed to die at least once in some previous Warrior-solo-PT and now it always bothers me. Otherwise would have killed that user.
With corpses using Swarm was useless, but still used it with other enemies (mabari, armor sets inside the castle). Spider was semi-good - as dodges were rare. Bear was really bad with crappy defense. Mostly was using spells.
And as usual: killed Connor to get Desire Demon encounter - reload - go to the Circle for help.
Desire Demon: only spells, used Life Drain anyway. No time for SS. Too bad.
The Fade: easy, used bear just for the hell of it. Intimidated DD to leave the boy for good and give me power.
Encounter "Unintended Consequences": eliminated mages with spells, melees are killed with Swarm. --
Time to call the Landsmeeting.

Mage-SS-no-pot-solo-PT
Forgot to mention: was running all the time in Felon's Coat + Cadash Stompers + Elementalist Grasp (from Unbound). Staff: Final reason/ Winder's Breath/ Corrupted Magister's Staff (paralysis here does not work)
-- lvl 21 + 1 DEX + 2 MAG Survival 3 Virulent Walking Bomb Inferno Frost Weapon (useless) Cone of Cold *More spells - "gift" from DD --
Encounter "Caravan Down": just checked new spells mostly.
Encounter "Brothers and Sons": Swarm for wolves; Bear for bear - attack/damage were very nice, but still that bear killed me. Reloaded, used some spells, after tried Spider - attack/damage/crits/dodges were nice to kill that bear.
Encounter "Recliffe Soldiers vs Darkspawn": spells (VWB is very useful)
Called the Landsmeeting
Encounter "Jowan Intentions": Spider (pushed the wrong button - wanted Swarm)
Zevran Ambush: Swarm
Crime Wave: - the Crown: Swarm - "Ambush" break-in: by accident found another exploit place where melee can't get you; died a few times in the very beginning - wrong order of spells; tried Swarm form - no dodges at all.
Howe Estate: no disguise. Cleared out the whole estate first. Died a few times. Used spells and SS forms - most of the time SS was sort of useless. But fire is very good. Cone of cold actually helped. Howe: tried three times in the room which was actually good with several AoE spells, but the closer the victory, more resists I saw. Ran out of the room - one mage followed. Used Inferno for the rest blocking their escape with glyph (Howe and the second mage resisted it). Used Sleep all the time on Howe; when Howe remained alone used Swarm (pushed me back to human with his attack), Bear (crappy defense), Spider (was the best), but finished Howe with one Life Drain and WG (almost died).
Cauthrien: tried several times in the hall, hiding behind different people and objects, just running around - did not help. Had to use old-fashioned way and fight Cauthrien running around chairs. Tried SS forms - useless at all, no dodges, one hit - out of mana and such things.
Turned in some quests and returned to the estate. Now have gold for that staff in the Circle, still think if I need it at all. Run around with Final Reason and Winter's Breath just fine.
The Alienage
Used spells and SS forms where was possible. Had a feeling that SS forms had the same damage as when I was in the Deep Roads. Somewhere just used SnS in human form for the hell of it (dmg 24-35).
Before Caladrius hit lvl 22 -- lvl 22 + 1 DEX + 2 MAG Death Cloud
About spells: now take some huge AoE spells as think already have good spells and AoE just could be useful during final battles somewhere. Would have taken some more single-target spells (Crushing Prison, Stonefist e.g.) but might be not enough lvls for that. Better safe than sorry I could say. --
Caladrius: not to waste time just used "Inferno - Death Cloud - Inferno" from the next room. Caladrius still had some health but not a problem. Lazy way to fight. SS have already checked.
Bought there Skill Tome: did not really need it but had enough gold. -- Survival 4 --
Something Wicked: locked Otto somewhere back in the rooms while fighting. In the end used Wade's armor set.
Turned in quests.
Encounter "Change in Leadership": several attempts with haste for every enemy (even had to use bombs). Taoran was the last so managed to use Swarm but very soon lost mana, after wanted to try Spider but he started to resist every spell so just had no time to shift.
Bought "Staff of the Magister Lord". Whatever.
Crime Wave: actually first wanted to rush through the estate; after decided to cheat (was too late, or tired, see no point to check SS forms there, idk) - just sent Zevran in stealth, switched back to Sharwyn and went away.
Loghain - went there already prepared: in Evon's Plate, dodge boots, with crit arms and SnS. - used hex every time before shift - Spider: not a single hit, only with poison (20+) and with OW (8-10), saw some dodge - Bear: one hit (30+), several missing slams, OW (30-40), no resists to WarCry or Shield Bash - Swarm: at least something; damage is not that great but at least had dodges.
-- Affliction Hex --
Time for bloody war and some numbers.

Mage-SS-no-pot-solo-PTUsed Felon's Coat, Stompers, Elementalist grasp gloves (+ 5 % all elemental damage). Took the helmet off as usually do. In some places maybe will change armor (fireproof e.g.), but intend to use above written set. Weapon: now run with Staff of the Magister Lord/SnS for SS (Starfang + Fade Wall). -- Redcliffe village: before the bridge - Swarm, after spells. Died several times because of Crushing Prison. -- lvl 23+3 MAG Rock Armor -- Castle courtyard: spells; managed to use spider Market District: ogres all over the place so just spells. For general also spells as his attack is very good and damage 100 +; tried SS but was useless. Alienage: killed the mage with spells (inferno, Death Cloud, VWB etc), after used SS forms. Mostly enemies are weak but there are some Alphas and such damaging 100+. Palace District: ogres and mages - so spells. -- lvl 24+ 3 MAG CT1 Stonefist -- Fort Drakon - Steps: Three deaths as with the first and the second dragon other enemies were attacking me. Did not change armor. Fireball to the right, acid flask to the left and the usual spot in the corner. AoE spells are still handy + fireball. In general much easier of course in comparison with other solo PTs so this annoying part was not annoying for a mage. The only thing - could not use SS. Fort Drakon - insideused SS with shades, three Alpha enemies. Assassin - tried but always either too many enemies at once with resists, or one main assassin resisting everything. The third attempt - just tried to divide them and the main one came after without resists. Ran around the table. They attack very fast without misses: no SS Achdemon: as two previous High Dragons. Used Corruption Helm. ------ Final numbers with the armor I have mentioned (without the helmet) and SnS. Some numbers could have been better with another armor (like crit hands, using helmet). Was writing down numbers only during the last fight, but checked only with several enemies (some elites). In any case the difference is not that huge. Bear (rage) STR 33 (43) DEX 48 (48) WILL 34 (34) MAG 77 (77) CUN 21 (21) CON 52 (52) MR 51 (51) PR 99 (100) SP 67 + 5 /defense 78+18 (78+8)) /damage 30-49/crits max 63/attack: crappy SpiderSTR 25 DEX 53 WILL 34 MAG 77 CUN 21 CON 44 MR 51 PR 93 SP 57 +3 /defense 83 +18 /damage 20-33/crits max 43/attack semi good-/dodge semi-good/poison damage 20+ SwarmSTR 25 DEX 42 WILL 34 MAG 77 CUN 21 CON 28 MR 51 PR 80 SP 67 +5 /defense 72 + 18 /damage 13-29/attack good/dodge semi-good Final thoughts: usually in SOLO get better understanding of everything. Can't say the same about Shapeshifter Spec. Put points not only in MAG, but also DEX and STR. Tried different armor and weapon to see the result. Used SS when was possible. Using it all the time in not an option, only combined with spells. So for SOLO SS Spec is just for fun, for team-PT do not see any benefit for the team, mage is aways better with other specs. Maybe dumping more points in DEX/STR could have made a difference, but need MAG as well. Would have been great to see this spec in further games. Maybe it s as Morrigan mentioned, one of those forgotten ptactices; and the only thing we have is in DAI where Viv mentions "circle has limited knowledge of SS; there are spells preventing SS." In another BW game - Neverwinter Nights - there is the same spec with more forms. Even if it is better-made (much better) in NWN, still using SS forms all the time was not an option in NWN as well. In any case my opinion has not changed: no clear certainty about the build and armor and useless for PT as it is.
