Hi good folks. I have dropped into lobbies with the odd maps once in a while, the Remnant Ruins and Vertigo. Are those only available via APEX missions, and what are the advantages of playing them vs random rotations (save for dodging Sandstorm)? Also I stayed in one of those lobbies, and saw that the custom set-up was APEX, Vertigo, and some sort of melee challege condition? Again, are there any advantages, are they part of challenges, is there some sort of a rotation I am missing and should be doing like the daily challenge I've only now discovered?
is there some sort of the best strategy for playing custom stuff other than clearing the daily first?

There are daily apex missions on all difficulties. They are shown on the same menu as your strike teams. They are strike missions with an extra chevron design on the logo. A note that there is no platinum mission shown, it can be accessed through the custom game menu, as can all of them, go to where it says "custom mission" and you get a menu showing the ones available, and which ones you have completed.
The first time you beat them they provide extra credits, xp, and mission funds for the item store. They have special modifiers, and these are what defines the amount of the bonus. Ones that buff the player give 10%, detrimental ones give 15%, and the "one life to live" modifier gives 20%
Most modifiers make the game harder, or force you to play a certain way to maximize your effectiveness. For example there are various "X skirmishes", a shotgun skirmish increases shotgun damage by 50%, but reduces all other gun damage by 50%. This is considered a beneficial one, because if you use a shotgun it is just 50% more damage.
Others include "dampened X", for example dampened weapons reduces you magazine size and damage with all guns by 25%. Others in the bad category are enemy buffs, like glass jaw, where enemy melee deals 10x damage.
The one life to live modifier mentioned means you can't be revived, you drop, you die for the wave. This one really forces you to think before you jump in.

All Apex missions have modifiers that make them a little different from the usual random settings where the game picks a map and enemy faction for you. These modifiers promotes some aspects of the gameplay while demotes others to mix it up. You earn Mission Funs in addition to credits and XP the first time you play the mission. You can repeat these missions but you'll only earn credits and xp subsequently.
Both the Remnant Ruins map and the Vertigo map are mission specific ones. Vertigo will be in our regular map rotation in a couple of weeks while the Remnant ruins map will not.
edit: Ninja'd. Misguidedworm has a better explanation.👍

Oh, zut, I usually just clear everything with sending strike teams, so I am missing out on the MP credits/XP then getting the SP rewards instead. Okay, ty, I will try to leave them out and do them via MP.

Yea, definitely worth doing for the extra credits as long as the modifiers aren't too bad. Some horrible ones I just skip altogether.
Does get boring playing the same map again and again though.. wish they'd offload some bonuses to random/random.

I think there was also one that might have been Aqua, but I am not sure. Actually, between the Daily Chalkenges & APEX, Andromeda is getting more interesting to me than ME3MP, b/c I was not here for the Events/Challenges they used to have in that one. Anyways, looking forward to trying APEX purposefully, obviously not platinum, lol.

Typically they roll out new maps as Apex-only for a while, then move the maps into the regular rotation. This is what happened with Paradox and Aqua and will eventually happen with Vertigo.
The only exceptions are the Remnant Location "progressive" map (with the doors that open) which Bioware has stated is too complex / hard-coded to be added to the regular rotation, and the small Remnant Vault map (the first room of Location).

Apex missions and the way they have been handled sucks awfully. I want to play character A with weapon B but since we have a new apex mission out the lobbies are all apex missions in which the character or gun do not fit.
