Classic great movie. If you're easily disturbed here's your TRIGGER WARNING. Racist and misogynistic. *snip* If a movie is -ist against everything, is it really -ist against anything?

I recently watched the latest version of Robin Hood (the one with Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx) and thought it was a decent action movie, but with HUGE problems as a Robin Hood story. The bullet list version of my problems:
- The supreme villainy of the Church. I mean, I get that the Church wasn’t really honest back in the Crusades, but the movie really goes out of its way to paint every member of the Church as super greedy, living in debauchery, and actually attempting to overthrow the whole British kingdom! I’m Muslim, so I shouldn’t really care about how the Church works, but this just felt uncomfortable and wrong.
- The attempts to try and modernize the historical period of Robin Hood went a little too far, especially with what people wore, the fact that they primarily used crossbows, and how super fast archery apparently is. I mean, if you took any action scene and replaced the arrows with guns and horses with cars, it would pretty much just be the same scene!
- They turned Robin Hood into Batman. Seriously. They did the whole “rich guy during the day, vigilante at night thing” The scenes where Robin had to play the rich lord and rub elbows with other rich guys felt too much like Bruce Wayne.

My reaction is frankly / meh by this trailer. I grew up watching watching Chinese movies back in the 70s onwards and it seems to me the art of war, intrigue and sword dancing have vanished.

Okay, I know I said something similar to this recently, and this might be the wrong place to put this, but I can’t get it out of my head:
Dear creators of the 2018 Robin Hood movie. I am a Muslim, and I appreciate you taking the time to make your Muslim character not a villain and arguably the most interesting character in the whole movie...but FUCK YOU AND YOUR VILE, DEVIOUS, AND HORRIBLE DEPICTION OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH!

It was surprisingly good for a German production, only half of the actors were awful. I will watch S2 for sure, although I wonder if we'll get a Mad Max scenario as hinted by the ending, and I'm not sure they have the budget to make that look good...

I thought they all acted pretty great but then I don't understand German very well, they could've all been shit and I probably wouldn't have noticed lol. Are German shows usually terrible or something? If they do decide to take it in a apocalyptic Mad Max route then I'm ok with the looks being a little lower budget as long as the writing keeps me intrigued, however I think they'll keep the sets and any cgi subtle.

I'm also psyched about season 2 - but equally skeptical. This can go sideways pretty easily, given the complexity of the previous season. What I loved about season 1 was how atmospheric the show felt. It had a very distinct look too, I liked the pacing and the writing, and the casting was simply amazing! So many characters but you can still keep track easily because many look a lot alike. Btw I hope that they keep CGI and stuff subtle as well, it would totally not fit the show until now. It doesn't need it. And yes, German TV shows are ... um ... not usually this good, let's put it that way. (With exceptions, obviously!)

Are German shows usually terrible or something? If they do decide to take it in a apocalyptic Mad Max route then I'm ok with the looks being a little lower budget as long as the writing keeps me intrigued, however I think they'll keep the sets and any cgi subtle. German actors often sound very wooden as if they're just reading a script. It sounds very unnatural to a native speaker. Especially when they try to sound surprised or angry. I read once that a lot of actors in Germany have a theater background, so maybe that affects how they talk? But tbh I think our actors just suck these days. Wasn't always like that, mind you. Anything from the 60s or older was great. Especially comedies (same for American productions at the time). I have no idea what happened. It's as if they can't walk AND talk anymore. Because our voice actors do GREAT work with dubbing foreign movies. It's when they are on screen that the acting part seems to be focused on the physical aspect of acting. So they may LOOK convincing but they don't sound convincing. If that makes any sense?
Most of the main characters in Dark are pretty good though, I admit. One of the kids suffered the usual stilted acting, forgot which. And a few minor characters were cringy too but this is probably as good as it gets these days. Especially in the art department. The show has an interesting look. I also liked the script quite a bit.
On the other hand, maybe American acting seems so much better to me because I'm not a native speaker? In any case, German acting makes me cringe 90% of the time...
There are a number of OK or even good German movies and we have a number of decent enough detective series but I avoid pretty much all German productions. We also don't have the budget. German TV shows are mostly just awful. An American friend showed me clips of this cheesy show "Pretty Little Liars" she kept watching for some reason, mostly to laugh about how bad it is. And THAT is about what ALL German TV series are like...
The best modern German production I've seen in years was an indie film that took forever to make because they lacked the funding. This one LOOKS good, the acting is pretty good because one thing I personally always enjoy is ghetto style German (orginating from Turkish immigrants but now used by white middle class kids as well) dumbass humor. There is a certain type of German humor that I like. (Most German attempts at comedy are painful however.) This film is quite gory but also damn funny in a very messed up way. Script is quite clever. The trailer subtitles are pretty bad though and I'm not sure the humor translates well, but here it is:

I just purchased The War Of The Worlds (1953 Film) in 4k (Dolby Vision) on VUDU. Holy sh*t! It looks, and sounds amazing. I'm hearing sound effects I've never heard before (and I've been a fan of the movie since watching it on VHS when I was a kid in the 90's). The original effects in mastered 4k actually enhances them rather than work against them. Paramount did a fantastic job remastering this film. If you're a fan of sci-fi in any way, and have never seen this movie before, watch it. It's a classic. It earned the Academy Award for Visual Effects at the Oscars.

The good guy just gives up, and the bad guy gets busted up and walks off into the sunset. To me, I thought, 'what is the point of this?' It's a traditional Western, with a very non-traditional 3rd act. The point is to subvert our expectations, which it does brilliantly
