Just saw this the other night. It's getting good reviews because it's decent, but cheesy & also because DC hasn't made a good movie for over a decade. Average at best 5.5/10 How was Mark Strongs performance? As someone who would give this movie a higher rating (yeah it's cheesy, but it's the GOOD kind of cheesy compared to the drab of previous DCEU) I will say Mark Strong's performance is still...well, Mark Strong. It's pretty much his villain performances you've seen in movies like Sherlock Holmes and John Carter.

I've become obsessed with this: I'd only vaguely heard of the musical before, and the trailer itself didn't make a huge impression, and people were making so much fun of the animation. But I became curious. So I got a hold of the 1998 recording of the performance, and now I know the names of all the cats (Munkustrap, Rum Tum Tugger and Mr. Mistoffelees are the best, obviously) and kind of can't wait to drag my girlfriend to the movies in December. She's a sob for lovey dovey animations.

There is only one single factor that is the motivation to do this: Woman of color. None other. Yes, that is highly both racist and misandrist, in my book. Because that is why! Literally the only why. Whether it's "White men" doesn't matter for this type of culture vandalism, that of late threaten to destroy most culture franchises around us. Why do you even point out that it's "white men"? Is that important to you? Activists control this, not the owners or managers. Activists in media, activists in HR, activists in the arts, activists in marketing. You're not supposed to be able to protest these things. If you do, you're branded racist and misogynist. And if the character is supposed to be lesbian, then you're a homophobe as well. But here's the real deal: If you remove James Bond, it's no longer a Bond movie. It's something completely different, although it might still be a spy-action flick. Nothing stops anyone from doing those kind of things. Then they have to do the groundwork, create characters that people care about. Many have done that before. But the activists can't do that. And they don't understand why not. So they figure they can steal the success of an already established franchise by replacing the central character/characters. You bugging man. Ain't nobody marching to get Bond replaced by a black woman lol Don't be silly! What planet have you been living on? Of course there is. It's been going on for a long time now. www.independent.co.uk/voices/thor-4-natalie-portman-avengers-endgame-box-office-diversity-inclusion-a9017656.html

Just saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood... ..and it didn't disappoint. I give 8.5/10. It would be 9.5/10 if it were shorter (it's over 2 1/2 hours). It felt really bloated at times, and like there was 3 movies going on at the same time. Occasionally comes off as Hollywood navel gazing, but it works here. Still, Brad Pitt and Leo both crushed it in this film. Seriously, they both did a spectacular job. Second time I've liked Leo (first was Catch Me If You Can) The violence nature is reduced from other films IMO (this is not Kill Bill at all), but the finale is exactly what you'd expect from Tarentino. Easy to recommend this one. 8.5/10

Easy to recommend this one. 8.5/10 I want to see this movie soon. Quentin has said on more than one occasion that his reputation for having "extremely violent films" is a bit unfair & exaggerated. Obviously his films are often about criminals and murderers, so violence is implied. However often people remember things in a slightly skewed way. For example, the infamous "ear scene" from Reservoir Dogs doesn't actually show the act itself. Yes it's brutal to see the results of this disfigurement, but the camera pans up and to the side as Mr. Blonde slices away...

Am having a blast rewatching the old Rocky movies. I remember sitting through each one as a kid just waiting for the boxing to start, but viewing them as an adult you can really enjoy all the humanity and that clueless masculine softness Stallone put into the character. And Carl Weathers is just a charisma machine as Apollo Creed.
Again, movies about washed-out young men desperately trying not to self-destruct, never having lived up to their potential or found their purpose, really strike a chord these days. Much more so than they did twenty or thirty years ago.

Finally saw this flick, somewhat disappointing The pace was weird, the writing was overstuffed & the characters were good, but not up to QT's standards IMHO The ending was good, but that second act was nothing short of an endurance test. Just brutally boring & self-serving. Perhaps I need to see it again in a few months... 5.5/10

Rambo: Last BloodI saw this movie on Friday, and for the most part did not like it because the 3rd act was overly violent, poorly edited, and seemed try to justify the violence by glorifying it with clips from the previous Rambo movies, almost as character development. Over the last few days as I've thought about it some more, I've just been getting more and more pissed off because I really like Rambo as a character, and as a finale this movie is just annoyingly poor. I've now re-watched all of the other Rambo movies, and all, even the weirdly quippy Rambo 3, are superior to this entry by varying degrees. First, Rambo: Last Blood is bit of a [insert current political phrase] fantasy due to the violence that crosses the border from Mexico into Arizona used to justify Rambo's actions, but that's completely separate from whether the movie is any good. There are plenty of movies out there that I like just fine despite the fact that they have f**ked up subtexts. Besides, action movies use inherently reductive stories that if cross cultures can seem racist. Nothing to really be done about that except film a different type of movie. Second, the story, what of it exists, is fairly bleak. Pretty sure no Rambo movie before this was as hopeless. It completely embraces Rambo's sentiment to the missionaries from Rambo (2008): "You're not changing anything." Third, don't expect a return of anything like this epic soundtrack. I can't even remember the movie's action theme while I'm writing this now.
Fourth, the finale set piece treats that bad guys like a bunch of idiots. They are already such one dimensional caricatures of evil that they are almost laughable, but the movie goes the extra mile to make them completely incompetent. Additionally, as I said ealier, the confrontation with them seems really poorly edited. After waiting for the entire movie (70+ minutes?) for this to start I was a bit shocked at what a mess it was. Fifth, I feel like someone edited the hell out of this movie to remove large chunks of plot development that would have given it much more heart. Rambo's stories have always existed within a society whose failure of or abuse by institutions have triggered him into action, and ultimately there is some recognition by members of the institution of their failure. From the small town residents of Hope in First Blood, to his CIA handlers in Rambo: First Blood 2, to the pacifist missionaries in Rambo (2008), the violence usually shocks people into some sort of change in perspective. There is a point about 2/3 through where it is pretty obvious that Mexican or US law enforcement would step in and fail, and then subsequently realize how badly they have failed after the finale. I honestly can't imagine any decent script writer constructing the story we got in this movie, and leaving that out, but with it missing the movie descends into a sick notion that extreme violence for revenge is somehow satisfying for Rambo and the viewing audience. I thought that idea was thoroughly debunked by the end of First Blood. In fact, after I subsequently watched Rambo: First Blood Part 2 again, I realised the finale of Last Blood is lifted pretty much straight from RFB2 after Co gets killed, and John goes on the rampage against the Vietnamese and Russian military. That movie just gave Rambo couple of extra righteous motivations besides revenge.
And finally, this is probably my weakest criticism because it describes what I wish this movie was, but its been annoying me more and more as I've re-watched the other films. John Rambo is: - a Green Beret that served in Vietnam - lost most of his team, captured and tortured by the Viet Cong, and who escaped captivity on his own, - shot up a Washington town in '82 and killed at least one police officer, - tried in US court and jailed, - subsequently released in '85 for a secret mission where he rescued about 6 US POWs still being held in Vietnam against his handler's orders, and with them trying to kill him, - lived in a buddhist monastery in Thailand, while stick fighting for extra cash, - fought with the Mujahideen in Afghanistan in '88, and - lived as a guide, fisherman, and snake handler in Thailand until '08 NO ONE seems to realize any of this, and Rambo barely acknowledges it. C'mon man! You're telling me this is supposed to be the final Rambo movie, and none of this comes up? John is back on US soil and as far as we can tell, doesn't have interactions with the VA or other veterans, doesn't have law enforcement checking on him given his history, and doesn't even comment on US troops in Afghanistan or Iraq? Why'd they even bother making this a Rambo movie? As for the extreme violence depicted, I'm not a fan. My kindest interpretation of what happens to Rambo in this movie is that, up until now we have only seen Rambo on a rescue mission, and so the violence was expedient and in service to some strategy. Now he has basically snapped - lost the calm normalcy he had so long sought, and at times temporarily achieved, ever since First Blood, and the 3rd act is the full on psychopathic psychotic break into violence. So the movie basically ends John Rambo's long personal journey in tragedy.

I watched the much hyped MIDSOMMAR today (iTunes).
Aaaand I was not impressed. Neither was my company. We both liked Hereditary quite abit but this one was a 6 or 7 out of 10 for us.
Very predictable cultist sacrifice plot with zero innovation or surprises. Even the lauded cinematography was nothing special. It looked nice but I was expecting a visually captivating trip. It wasn't really. The most intense mental breakdown I've seen lately or ever was in Mother, a controversial film that overall wasn't brilliant either but that I would recommend just for that impressive dramatic set piece towards the end. Visually very cool movie.
Hereditary had MUCH better character drama too. Seeing the boy slowly lose it was painful to watch ad I even thought the surreal ending really worked (unlike in The Witch where the ending ruined the film for me). In Midsommar you get the usual traumatic family death background that doesn't really matter much aside from a few panic attacks. It's all.about the drugs. Hell, I liked the disappointing character arc in this cheap ass Netflix film about another cult im Sweden better! I expected more from a high class movie production. Hereditary played out very different from what the trailer suggested. Midsommer plays out exactly like you imagine. I do not recommend it.

A War of the Worlds movie actually set in Britain in the period the book was originally written? That will be cool to see! Although, as brought up by a YouTuber I liked, one of the neat things future adaptations have done is the various clever ways of modernizing the aliens and setting yet still work with the books original tone, from adapting the Alien tech to be more resilient to modern weapons to even changing the location to America since the whole point of the book was the shock of how a global superpower is suddenly rendered obsolete by an alien force.

There are already two of these, both good in their own way.
Hollywood really does need to think up new ideas instead of rehashing, rebooting something that has been done.

Except this ISN'T Hollywood. This is BBC, aka "Made for British Television." Plus, this so far seems to be the ONLY adaptation that actually looks like it's going to follow the book, down to it taking place in London during the period the book was written in.
