How is experience calculated. I am assuming medals have something to do with it. I don't expect the exact formula but do kills count towards experience not just the kill medal. I usually play with a melee character and get a gold melee in the first few rounds. If I keep killing with melee will I get more experience. I usually switch to pistols after the medal but would rather keep hitting with melee. Thanks for the input

Yes. All kills and damage dealt(except damaging shield) go into EXP points.

every game gives you a standard amount of xp based on the difficulty. each point you earn during the game gets added on to that number, whether it be from kills, damage, support, assists, etc. when you earn a medal, it gives you a bonus quantity of points depending on the level of the medal.
bronze = 250 silver = 500 gold = 1000
so if you wanted to maximize the amount of exp you get from a game, you would want to maximize the number of medals you get. e.g. assist gold medal, support gold medal, biotic kills gold medal, pistol kills gold medal, etc.
certain classes can rack up huge scores by increasing the number of points they get from each kill. for example, when a turian soldier kills a redbar enemy with a weapon, he gets 110 points. when a human adept kills a redbar enemy, he'll usually pull or singularity first before killing, therefore earning 144 points (110 for the kill, 34 for the assist). asari adepts can get even more because she can get kill, assist, and support points all at once.

Yes. All kills and damage dealt(except damaging shield) go into EXP points. I wish they could account for shield damage some how. The current point system sucks for power challenges because a significant portion power damage goes into stripping shields.
