Oh yeah, I forgot this isn't the politics thread. My bad.
I've pretty much said my piece anyway.

The constitution and bill of rights are political documents and should remain as such. Bringing moral questions into the purview of the supreme court is asking for trouble.
I actually agree with that but eh it didnt cause anything bad only something good
Although arguably... there have been cases where marriage has been labelled a fundamental right in the past so there IS a kind of link there... somewhere
One thing I really cant stand is when people say that the supreme court like stopped their ability to vote on the system of marriage they wanted... really cant stand when people say that... I mean... it would just turn into a case of people who have nothing to do with it deciding whether or not millions of people have the same rights as everyone else... and im fairly sure the result would have been no anyhow

Did they not interpret the Constitution as guaranteeing the right of gay marriage? Or, more specifically that whatever guarantees regular marriage also applies to gay couples? Seems like that would be the way to do it. Neither the constitution nor the bill of rights has any say in what happens with marriage. Marriage laws are entirely outside of the constitution and bill of rights, thus the supreme court isn't supposed to have any say in the matter. This'll cover my points much more concisely: www.suanews.com/constitution/gay-marriage-what-does-our-constitution-say.htmlThat's a weird breakdown in that article. I thought the Constitution/Bill of Rights was meant to protect people from "unlawful" laws. It should prevent governments from passing laws that infringe what these documents guarantee, yes? That should also include state governments, should it not? So then, if marriage is not explicitly mentioned, can the government pass a law that prevents you from marrying in the traditional definition? And if they can't, does the question not become what would prevent gays from marrying, other than discrimination which can then tie back into the Constitution or Bill of Rights? From my brief skimming of Google, it seems that's how they did it. Edit: Sorry, after the Canadian v American culture side trip we took last week, I was inclined to cut discussion a little more slack for a bit. But Draining is right. If people want, I can move posts related to this topic to Wrongthink or elsewhere.

1. I'm a science nerd who went the Liberal Arts route (though I'm somewhat farther along the science route than you are since my degrees are in the Social Sciences), and ended up studying many of the sciences and engineering in my own free time. I know the pain of derision from a few science majors (though most of the scorn came from the Business/Professional degree types). I'm thus much more inclined towards the scientific method and practical applications rather than interpretative humanities. So, as a fellow liberal arts major, I'll ask how your degree helped you out with the same stuff that scientists do? I'd honestly rate your average calculus exam as being more intellectually demanding than any English term paper to be honest. Not to rain on your parade, but two can play at that game 2. That may be the case, but as a pragmatist, I'd have to say that the field that helps us figure out how the universe and society is more important than figuring out how we feel about it. Thus, IMHO, Science > Art. 3. The world would be 100% better if people actually took the time to stand up and argue and debate over discourse, reason, logic, and science. After all, you get plenty of time for silence in the grave. 4. I don't understand the context here, and I don't care much about it either. 5. Very true, and I'm arguably the largest offender of that on these boards. Hell, I'm doing it right now with you! Deprecating humor aside (towards myself and my awareness of my considerable personality flaws up to and including my black hole-sized ego and pride), it's often a case of posturing, insecurity, comparison, or social construct. There are a variety of reasons for this, many depending as much on the culture you grew up in to your own personal nature. 6. Agreed, but I'd argue that the introverts trying to be extroverts are even worse. All that said, and as I mentioned it on this forum, I think life simultaneously is and is not a popularity contest. 7. You know what's better than both? Studying orbital mechanics, astronomy, physics, etc. Because reality completely blows both franchises out of the water. 8. Yep. Yep. Yep. Asswipes indeed-y. 9. I have no comment on the matter. I'm not a particular fan or follower of horror films. They don't really interest me much. 10. I have not read that series, but given Mass Effect's overt nature of including homage and nods to many science fiction tropes, cliches, and plots, I wouldn't say it's a rip-off so much as just using a lot of the same general ideas that are common in Sci-fi. 1. I have a highly nuanced view of the world, so, when it comes to the question of "intelligence," I could write paragraphs on all the possible ways that performance on any given academic task could be interpreted. I've just always found it odd that certain people could complain about English/history/et.al. being "easy" and "for dummies," and then fail spectacularly at it while simultaneously claiming I'm dumber than them because I excel at it. It boggles the mind. As for your other question, I'm able to clearly articulate my ideas, come at subjects from multiple points of view, and integrate scientific knowledge into a wider socio-cultural-political perspective, which I attribute to my Liberal Arts education far more than anything I learned in my science courses. 2. I'm super non-competitive. I don't really "get" the drive to compete, so, when science majors try to turn college majors into a competition, I just scratch my head and imagine apples and oranges. If anything, I think science/art are complimentary. Hell, it's not like I'm competing for jobs with physics majors, so, why the ire? 3. Debate all you want, but if a person's choices/lifestyle have absolutely no impact on your life or anyone else's, don't go red in the face trying to limit their rights to live as they will. 7. Yeah, but people don't go online and write reams of crappy, albeit highly entertaining, fanfiction involving orbital mechanics. 10. You say "homage," I say rip-off. Po-TAY-to, pa-TA-to, let's call the whole thing off.

You're assuming humans are logical creatures who will act reasonably in that the pursuit of money will trump their desire not to interact with certain sets of people. I'm a cynic: people, as a group, are tribal, territorial, emotion-based creatures who will, most likely, follow their baser instincts when engaging with others. Seeing as how the government had to step in to enforce desegregation, I have no inclination to sit back and wait for the mad apes that run this planet to come to their senses. Unpopular opinion: the store owner who has his feelings hurt by not being able to discriminate against a black person causes less harm to society than the black man not being able to patronize the establishments of his choosing. Part of the role of the U.S. government is to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority. As for marriage, considering all the legal rights and benefits that come with "marriage," I don't believe it's realistic to expect government out of marriage any time soon. It's not realistic to expect many things, yet I stick to my principles regardless. I don't believe discrimination of that kind needs to be worried about. We live in a time where information can be disseminated so quickly that the entire country would know if someone was treating someone unfairly. If a business discriminates against a minority, chances are they're going to be boycotted to hell and back at which point they'll likely go out of business or stop discriminating. Also, again, I don't think many people would discriminate like that to begin with since it goes directly against what is for many people the greater desire, which is to make more money. Except that people still do discriminate. It's often not as obvious, but it's there regardless. The invisible hand of the free market and the internet have yet to turn society into a pure meritocracy. *EDIT: Whoops, missed the post telling us to take it to another thread. Ignore this. My bad!

Id rather delete my posts if it comes to having them being moved... general aversion thing Aversion? To what? Wait aversion isnt the right word avoidance is better avoidance is what I meant To the Wrongthink Thread as a not really political person I dont want to get involved with it at all and that kinda includes not having things moved... this was a kind of rare thing an actually constructive discussion of this kind which made me think and question and yeah I enjoyed it that constructiveness will probably be well... turned into something else by the time its moved and id rather see at least what I said deleted rather than maybe being the cause of a discussion that I wouldnt want it to be... if that makes any sense at all... right now its done and over but if its moved especially when its right at the front of the thread it probably wont be Also im personally happier with my thoughts being deleted here rather than moved over there because of the general tone of the thread/its reputation and other things like that

I don't think I've tried mussels, but I do use oyster sauce in my cooking sometimes. I find actual oysters taste like clams...or at least pretty close, not the greatest but better than sushi.

I fucking love me a good salmon, but that's as much as I'm willing to do. nothing from the sea is edible, we should just leave the damn thing well alone. I guess I'm the unpopular opinion here because I fucking love seafood! Mussels, oysters, clams, lobsters, prawns, squid, crab and all kinds of fish are tasty as fuck! Granted it does depend on the way they're cooked but seriously, who can say no to fried calamari rings!

If you think about it, seafood are the insects of the sea. Exoskeletons, feelers, and many legs.

Speaking of My Little Pony, I'm not really a fan. I've only watched a few episodes of it. But I am a fan of the music that the fans create, and I really like it when they poniefy things.

Ive never had a mussel or an oyster and I never will no idea what they taste like but they look gross! They pretty much taste like the ocean. We serve them at work and cook them in wine sauce and what not. I just think they are gross to eat because you are eating it's entire, slimy body. Sex organs and all. I like other types of seafood though. I'll eat any kind of fish meat and crab meat. I love sushi too.
