Getting a job has never been easy for me; after I got my teaching exam I struggled to find work, and only got work within the field of special needs teaching (which I was wholly unqualified for). I did this for a couple of years, decided a change was needed, so I started studying HR-management. At the time you had a fairly good chance of getting a job, but now two years later it is one of the toughest occupations to find employment. After having sent out several applications I swallowed my pried and turned back towards teaching and offered my services at one of my old jobs - the worst part wasn't that they didn't even remember me, nor was it that I didn't get the job despite it being a teaching job they have a hard time finding anyone for... the worst part was that despite my history with them and the fact that we did a formal interview, they didn't even bother calling me to tell me this - I just got a mail with two sentences almost a month after the interview. I'm sure I'm not the only one stuck in unemployment and feeling crappy about it, so I thought this could be a thread where we share experiences and tips, or just simply comfort and cheer each other.

Wish you all the best in finding a job, but if you don't mind: Are you really sure you want to teach and are prepared to commit yourself to a teaching post? One of my friends is the best teacher I've ever seen. She's patient, knowledgeable in her field and funny as hell. Most of her students love her to bits, even the marginalized delinquents respect her, and I'm telling you that it's absolutely not easy at all. You really gotta be passionate(like 100% of the time. No negative mindset allowed, ever) about your job and spend shit tons of time on your work. Unlike most jobs, you're working with individual human beings at their most emotionally-unstable stage of life. I know it's definitely not in my place to judge, but I've seen way too many teachers just doing it for the pay and don't really care about their students(or act like they care but actually don't. I don't know which is worse). Education holds an extremely important role in our society's sustainable development, and I really wish all the soon-to-be teachers would put that in mind and try their best to be the most responsible and loving role models for our future generations.
Apologies to the OP if you feel like I'm lecturing you. I am definitely not. After having seen way too many bad teachers to last a life time, I can't help but wonder why some people have even decided to teach. It really breaks my heart to see a supposedly heart-warming relationship between teachers and students can seldom be established due to irresponsibility on the teachers' part and/or bad parenting. Think twice before you apply for another teaching post and please remember: it's not a job for you if you expect return on investment all the time.

Job searching and finding is a strange and bizarre thing. Over the years the jobs I thought I had a really good shot at or felt I was a shoo in I did not get and then boom, out of no where comes an opportunity i didn't know existed. Do you have the ability to move to find a job Bunny or do you want to stay where you are, i had a sister and sister inlaw who were both teachers and both of them has to start out by moving to small communities in the middle of nowhere when they 1st started. Then after a few years they had more experience and better job choices.

1. Take any job. Be a waiter, cleaner, security guy, taxi/uber driver, anything. You'll get some income and more importantly, you'll be active and among people. This way you won't be that desperate. Searching for work in your field will be "aiming higher" instead of fighting for survival.
2. If you have plenty of time, it may be good to start learning something new, anything you may be passionate about i.e. new language, programming etc.

Okay, some clarification seems to be in order: This thread, although written when I was feeling a bit down, was meant to mostly be a place for encouragement and possibly cute animal gifs. This thread was never meant to be about me, but it's for everyone in this situation. Not looking for a pity party or anything! I just thought it could be good for people to have a thread where they could be cheered up a bit in the bleak search for a living. Coincidentally, I got a call about a job interview just a few hours after I wrote the OP - go figure! They couldn't tell me very much about the job, so I'm wary but still slightly optimistic. It's a teaching position for adults, which I think would suit me better. Fingers crossed!

I was right there with you, on finding a job. I was un-employed for 7 and then 6 months after losing my IT postions due to company problems.
At first I had to take a job in a thrift store, just to survive. Then I was able to find a temp/placement company, that was able to place me in a permanent position.
I don't know anything about teaching, but if they have temp companies like that, you might want to try there.
edit: also, you might want to look in career fairs. That's where I was able to find my previous IT position. This is assuming they have teachers career fairs.

There was a time when I was trying to make it in the film industry and steady employment only happened in the summer. Feast or famine.
After a few years of this i stopped beating my head against the wall and realized that it just wasn't for me. I don't have the personality for all the necessary networking.
So i just did crap jobs until I landed this one. I swear though if I ever lose this job im just gonna give up for a bit and tramp across the country. Or maybe ill pull a Bukowski and finally get my writing off the ground lol
^Is it just me or do i really sound very self absorbed? Smh

Absolutely. I have issues right now, for a variety of reasons, some that are technical, some that are understandable, and some that some might shake their heads at.
I'm a military veteran, I was an officer, I have substantial experience in a technical field that I have no interest in pursuing, a Master's Degree in an area I'm only tangentially interested in, and short list of work experience during my period as an Enlisted man (I was in the National Guard while Enlisted.) I'm still nominally in the US Army, but I don't drill, I'm not actively serving, and I only get a scant paycheck of a few-hundred dollars at the start and middle of each month. I currently do some online work for a friend who runs a local gym, and I do contribute periodically to a local foreign policy analysis website that was run by a late-professor/mentor of mine, but for all intents and purposes, I'm 'unemployed.' I've been this way since about the beginning of the year.
Due to several factors, some employers find me overqualified for the positions I put in for, yet whenever I try to go higher, I get cited as not having enough experience within the company. It's a real catch-22. Add to that some of the more 'millennial' aspects of my position (I want to do something meaningful and I admit to wanting to have my cake and eat it too.) I tend to travel a lot, and I usually keep my finances in order long enough to go off somewhere for a few weeks. This isn't exactly cogent for job hunting, as you can imagine, but I figure that wasting my time at work when I could be out exploring is more worthwhile. Of course, ideally, I'd be completely open to getting a job where I can combine the two: just earlier this afternoon, I completed my application for the Peace Corps, and, if accepted, I'll be heading out to Guyana for two years to work as a Community Conservation Promoter. If I don't get accepted, I plan on either saving enough money to apply for a temporary work visa for another country and moving there for however long the fountain lasts, or going to work as a volunteer in a National Park.
I've had my time being responsible and respectable. I thought that once it might have been for me, but I generally don't like the idea of being chained to a desk or cubicle somewhere unless it means doing something more than just handling money or talking politics ad nauseum. That's not to say that if I got a job as a correspondent or analyst for CNN or wherever that I'd turn it down, but being in a hot monkey suit all day just doesn't appeal to me.
But I'm a different case; I spent 8 years of my life figuring out that the military wasn't going to go anywhere for me, and I'm still incredibly fortunate to be in my late-twenties with time to spare for some other things. I've found that my niche is as an educated generalist, and volunteering, service, and potentially activism for a variety of causes speaks to me, as much as being a park ranger or professional adventurer. I also have a civil pilot's license, and, although I have no plane to fly, I would be interested in using that (along with other skills befitting outdoor guides and such) to make a living while I explore the world.
If I could do it all again, I'd probably want to be an astronaut.
But my thing is the inverse - be comfortable with yourself, do worry about the day-to-day, but don't let it get in the way of thinking big and turning dreams into plans and plans into action.

The Hype Himself I do recognize the whole "you are too qualified to work behind the counter/waiter/whatever but not qualified/experienced enough to do what you are educated to do". It sucks, and it really is a catch-22. I was once turned down for a job because they insisted, despite me saying otherwise, that I would not be able to accept a job below my education-level. I hope you get the job at the Peace Corps, totally keeping my fingers crossed!

I hope you get the job at the Peace Corps, totally keeping my fingers crossed! I'm looking into also getting jobs for various state agencies out in the Western US; my part of the country is a real dump in every way imaginable, especially when it comes to state employment. I'd like to go Fed, but with the constant wave of scandal after scandal, I think I'll wait for another administration before casting my net there. My real passion would be to keep travelling; I had a staff position for most of my time in the Army, and was able to travel frequently on TDY's (more often than not, not somewhere that is really that desirable of a destination, but hey, it kept me out of headquarters most of the time.) The temporary work visa thing is something I want to do to be able to scoot around from country to country trying my hand at various stuff. One reason I want to do the Peace Corps is that it's a pretty damned fine resume booster, and I've only ever heard from people that it was a positive life experience.

I'm not talking a dead-end starter service job where you don't need a resume to apply (basically, so long as you're clean, not a thief, and not drunk/high for the interview, they'll give you the job.) I applied about a month ago for a position as a compliance analyst for INDOT starting at $33k, had two interviews (one phone, one personal), and was informed that they were unwilling to renegotiate an appropriate wage increase since someone with my experience should ideally be paid at least $6000 more. I told them I was fine with the pay cut, that I wanted to take the position, and I never heard back. Now, it seems like it's only been a month, but I got both my interviews within days of submitting my application.
