Even though the theme wasn't explored to it's fullest potential, the theme of going to a new galaxy and leaving everything you know (and possibly love) behind to explore. I've been thinking, considering an area I find most fascinating to be the world of planetology and exoplanetology, as well as stuff like the Alcubierre drive and interstellar travel. I decided to make a post to ask you: If we all of the sudden came out with FTL travel and you were chosen to be the first person to go interstellar, would you go? What would you bring? Would you go to an exoplanet to stay there permanently or would you want to make a roundabout trip? (Say that space debris, radiation, and energy required weren't an issue, and let's say that we didn't have to worry about going "backwards in time", and you got training on using some of the equipment involved) The main reason I came up with this thread was because, I think that with interstellar travel, FTL is going to have to be considered an option as it takes FAR too long to get anywhere in the universe otherwise.

Do the exoplanets have wifi? That would be a red line for me. Might be a nice holiday, though.
Follow up question: If you had the chance to go to another planet, but it would take 600 years, would you go? A sort of equivalent of the Andromeda Initiative, if you like.

Only if I get to choose who else is coming. I'm not moving to a new planet just to put up with the same kind of shitheads I deal with on Earth.

The only way wifi for earth videos would work for exoplanets would be something like a quantum entanglement communicator. I get the feeling wifi would be ridonkulous on exoplanets if you used QEC.

Oh, I'd definitely go. It'd probably be a miserable trip but the experience would completely be worth it.

In terms of equipment I'd bring this beauty Accurate, reliable, bolt-action because I worry about ammo consumption, it also is built to operate in extreme climates. You got to defend yourself you know?

I would go. I'm a sucker for the unknown. I would want it to be a one way trip. No point coming back when by the time I got back everyone I know would be long gone. I'd rather live a full life in a new place than take field notes for a couple of years and return.
I would take my other half, a full kindle, some puppies in cryo, and enough kohl eyeliner for a lifetime. I assume the basics (water, shelter, food) are covered. Hopefully I'd meet some new, intelligent species for a first encounter. I'm not sure I'd be the greatest example of humanity though. Far too pessimistic, sarcastic and abrupt.
If I had Quantum Entanglement Device I'd have my laptop hooked up to Ted-ED, Pottermore and BSN (of course). I wonder what the BSN trolls will be bitching about hundreds of years in the future?

Unless you mean another star within the Milky Way? Cause then, heck yeah I'd return to refill my supplies and download all the Scifi Films (and Bioware/Bethesda games!) I missed then I'd be straight back out there! Heck yeah!!!!

One of the few things I enjoy in life is traveling to remote and extreme places nobody has every been (or very few people have ever been), like mountain tops or remote islands. I'm a natural explorer, I enjoy the solitude and don't mind the dangers that come with it, but sadly I was born too late to discover any new lands or places in this crowded and throughly mapped place here. If I am allowed to bring a few personal items I hold dear I'd hop into the space ship and off I go, to discover new places and maybe even habitable planets that can be terraformed and colonized. Leaving would be easy for me as I would not leave much behind, I do not have much stuff or many friends. The personal items I would bring would be my trustiest rifle and my barbells and dumbbells so I can work out, which is one of my favorite things to do. The rifle because protection never hurts, and its one of my favorite items.

In terms of defenses for the ship, so far all I could think about would be something like a few firearms. I guess there could be something like a couple of 20mm cannons on the ship. If things fall apart? Oof, that's definitely something I haven't put much thought into. I'll need to work on that. I'd hope some of the technology would be easy to fix.

I would go underground like they did in the Fallout series and live in a vault till years later after the following ceases: For I believe that different nations on this planet would go to war with the discovery of FTL... I am sure some nations would even try to weaponize it. Yep. Going underground is best option. Then rise out of the ruins of what remains and build a FTL empire.

To be fair, I don't know if you can have a back up plan for what the A.I. faced when they arrived in Helius. That being said, I wouldn't go-the unknown/major change, and starting from scratch is not my cup of tea.

Would be a nice bonus if there were bangable aliens too.
