5 years ago people were told a minimum of 4gb of ram recommended 8gb, today people are saying minimum of 8gb recommended 16gb, in another 5 years that will likely double again so that the shiny new graphics card and 4kultra display isn't getting slowed back down to 30fps by not having enough ram... ram also often gets expensive when its an older standard and new systems are being built to the new standard so its well worth getting more now than waiting for its price to jump up. try loading dxmkd on a standard hdd and playing it (with the recommended spec'd system) then put it onto an ssd and tell me there no point having a larger drive.... most modern aaa games run to 50gig+ drive space + they need a swap file at least as large as your ram often twice that size for all those high end textures, so whilst you might not think that a larger drive is a good idea performance enthusiasts disagree under dx11 your correct but under dx12 that's supposedly changing so your actually getting more than just an upgrade in the number of raw comupte units that can be used.... making it actually worth going sli/xfire for the first time ever 5 years ago we were using the technology which was available 5 years ago. Just like in 5 years time people ideally should be using the technology available then - probably DDR5 memory. Buying lots of ram today for "future proofing" knowing that this ram will become obsolete regardless is not a smart move in my book. We all know that gaming technology gets obsolete. The only actual "Future proof" is upgrading. SSD is a must-have component for a gaming PC, no questions about it. But I can't see any reasonable link regarding a large 480GB SSD as minimum when paired with a 4K display. What dictates the size of your SSD are how many games you want to have installed in it, not the size of your resolution. As for DX12, let's wait and see. We already have some DX12 titles on the market and still no reason for going SLI/Crossfire, lets alone stackable Vram.

As someone with a 1440p/144hz/G-sync IPS monitor I think the current sweet spot is 1440p/120+ hz monitors for high-end gaming. 4K does not seem practical as they are too excessively demanding for gpus if one wants to maintain 60 fps on most games. Good luck with 120+ fps on these monitors.

We already have some DX12 titles on the market and still no reason for going SLI/Crossfire, lets alone stackable Vram. the size of the ssd become important when your running texture files for 4k, if your system is utilising the ssd as the swap file as well as hosting the game then theres no reason to suggest you wont need 64gb or more file size to hold those pre rendered texture files, hell even on HD in some games the swap file is running over 32gb for larger areas otherwise you get the dreaded stutter as players start to pre load before they come into view (something a lot of mmo's had on older hard drives) the whole point though is the OP wants his pc to last 5 years and the only way to do that is to get something that's overkill today but will likely be barely adequate then hence the higher ram, and sure a decent /top spec pc built today wont be up to much in 5 years but it might still be relevant in gaming terms, its not like there's going to be a huge breakthrough that puts quantum computers in every home with quantum storage arrays running to the yottabytes of storage space, or maybe there will be and those new toys will revolutionise life as we know it making instant solar system wide communications possible and spare cpu cycles will be put to a collaborative effort to allow interstellar travel ..... (but really I wouldn't expect that to start for at least a decade, not until they have figured out it wasn't a fluke and how to make the parts cheap enough to mass produce them reliably)

I have no idea what im doing
I thought it would be like a few thousand... huh... not as bad as I thought... my current pc cost like $500... its quite a few years old by now
Again, you can get a rig that is more powerful than the current gen consoles for 800 bucks easily, and less if you know what you're doing/are frugal/BLACK FRIDAY Edit: Also, holy fuck "a few thousand" went over my head. Bud, for multiple thousands of dollars, you can get a PC that will run the Mass Effect title AFTER Andromeda at 60 FPS. Actually holding on a couple of months for the Black Friday sales is pretty sound advice I reckon - I bet you'll be able to pick up something like a GTX 1070 (arguably the best bang-for-buck GPU atm) with a fair whack knocked off around then.

I don't plan on playing Battlefield 1 Good. It's a bad game made by bad people who do bad things.

Definitely grab one or two cheap SSDs on Black Friday. There are always great SSD deals towards the end of the year. Just make sure they're high quality with fairly high endurance (like the Samsung 850/950 Pro).
