Hi everyone,
I started playing Mass Effect Andromeda yesterday and first it didn´t start, or rather the screen remained black (slightly blinking, with a blinking white mouse cursor). No idea why. I managed to get into windowed mode and switched from "fullscreen" to "windowed borderless". The latter works perfectly. However, I still would like to know:
1) what is the difference between fullscreen and windowed borderless? Are there any disadvantages in windowed borderless? 2) Why the original fullscreen doesn´t work
I would be very happy about any kind of advice or hint!
Cheers,
lead

Fullscreen gives you better performance and less input latency at the expense of alt-tabbing speed.
Windowed Borderless imparts a performance loss and increases input latency but makes alt-tabbing instant.

Thank you for the reply - ok, understood. But what can I do to make the game run in fullscreen? I always get a black screen with a blinking mouse cursor. I am using a Geforce 970 GTX, version 384.76.

Gsync monitor? Also, drivers are out of date.

Fullscreen Windowed causes a drain due to the game trying to draw while the desktop items are being drawn as well. Specifically the the taskbar and its graphic user interface. Though I actually prefer playing in an actual window -doesn't have near any performance loss - none for me -probably due my system there though. . This sounds like the black screen bug from several patches ago. Something to try: In the ingame settings Set the game to go full screen. Then when the game launches if you have mouse in center of screen and the screen is black but you hear sound. ALT+TAB to get the desktop to show. THEN ALT+TAB immediately again. The game should then work.

Thank you for your replies.
@ Scepsis: I updated the driver (384.94), however to no avail. And what is gsync? However I doubt that I have it. The monitor is an older model (about 8 years, from HP) and in relation to nvidia I only install the core driver and physx.
@ Vanguard of Infinity: thank you, but it didn´t work. When I leave with ALT+TAB, for some reason I can´t get back using ALT+TAB - he rather opens a window of the game.

I'm running a 970GTX and have had no issues at full screen, so I think you can rule out the gfx card.

Update: I managed to solve the issue. The solution was to switch the frequency of the monitor from 60 Hz to 59 Hz. This did the job.

Gsync is a new monitor tech that allows the GPU to control the refresh rate of the screen dynamically. I ask because I have had blackscreen issues with Gsync in the past. Obviously you do not own a Gsync monitor and therefore, this doesn't help you. Update: I managed to solve the issue. The solution was to switch the frequency of the monitor from 60 Hz to 59 Hz. This did the job. Glad to hear it! Fullscreen is the way to go, imo.

Sorry for the late reply. I did this in the nvidia settings - just changed to 59 Hz. No idea why this worked though...

Just as a side note, if you ALT+TAB out of fullscreen then you press ALT+ENTER to return to it. Also, I know you've solved the black screen issue but I was wondering whether your GPU software is set to override the game's settings? I've found that setting the GPU to just rely on the in game graphical settings can help with display/graphics issues. But then again... not a doctor.

Shit is weird. All the more reason to stick to a 60 Hz monitor -till games actually can work perfectly with higher resolution frequency monitors. It just defaults to window when he did. It can help to set all graphic options to use game control... however that does not always work on some custom computer set ups.

Truth be told, you really can't talk shit on high refresh rate monitors as they are amazing. Also refresh rate is completely different from resolution. My issue was due to tinkering with Gsync driver setting, not the 240Hz refresh rate itself.
