Here's the thing, if you die during the hack objective and the circle gets overrun it's probably because you don't have enough fire power, you've picked the wrong character for that difficulty mode or you're not controlling the wave.
You probably think you're pretty fucked and you have no chance of completing the wave but don't quit out just yet. Chances are you'll have an Asari Huntress or Angaran Avenger on your team or an infiltrator with classic cloak. So don't just quit out. You just need one person on the hack circle while the other 3 distract the enemies.
Here's what you need to do:-
1) Get EVERYBODY away from the hack circle leaving no players inside it.
2) Three of you need to run as far away as possible from the hack circle and start shooting at the enemies who are still standing inside it. The little shits will only come out if they NEED to chase you to be able to shoot you. Only when you're out of their shooting range will they come out of the circle.
3) Once the circle is clear, the 3 players furthest away from the circle need to kill as many enemies as they can while 1 other guy on your team heads back into the circle to complete the hack. Enemies will always try to respawn near the guy that just killed them. Sometimes they're extremely cuntly and respawn directly behind you, sometimes they respawn right around the next corner. That's fine, you need them to do this. As long as they're not respawning close to the hack circle, you're good to go.
4) It's usually best to have the infiltrator on your team do the hacking but if you don't have one that's fine.
If any of the 3 players doing the distracting die during the hack (and they most likely will), they need to get up as soon as possible and start shooting again otherwise the enemies will fuck off back to the hack circle and ruin your day. So don't be stingy with medigels, get up, give em hell and get those credits.

Not sure a hack or upload on that center platform in Zero is actually possible, though (especially with non-communicating pugs)? Probably MEA's best players, in a coordinated group can do it. In case of imminent fail, host could always quit since there's a chance you won't get the same objective on host migration.

Usually when playing with PUGs, I'm unsure of what they might do? They might stay back and draw aggro but they tend to get shot down or they run to the Hack or Upload circle(s) (Non-infiltrators included) because naturally you'd want to get a head start but the enemies tend to gather fairly quickly. Nothing is ever certain. So I've learned that the safest way to approach this is to heavily distract multiple enemies by hiding in one of the "safe spots" on each map, often times the enemies get stuck doing nothing because they can't figure out what to do but their aggro is still towards me. Sometimes they just leave so I'll have to draw them back to me. It works great, and there have been times where we had to duo a Hack/Upload circle, without too much problem, but I haven't found a reliable spot on Vertigo.

I placed myself in the Gold farmers camping spot and killed as many as i could from the position. The enemies seemed to spawn through the doorway inside the building and came at me instead of the guys in the top spot. It made it more manageable for them. If you all stand in the top spot then you get overwhelmed. It's tough but certainly possible

My group has a strategy for it. 2 players go up the platform to do the hack and the other two stay at the two sides of the platform to prevent enemies from jumping up. Works almost 100% of the time. The only times we fail is when multiple members are out of gel already as the objective wave begins.
