(Okay, the post above inspired me to do a bit of fan fiction about myself <har har narcissism>)
Shepard has finished bothering with the Catalyst, being stuck in a wasteful decision on which path the galaxy will follow...
His legs have gone limp, his breath was slowing, yet he held onto his Carnifex pistol and proceeded towards the huge pillar of energy with determination of those before him.
Each given decision was bad, none of them in favor of efforts presented before or after the struggle.
The pulses of exploding ships beat like drums to the walk of an executed convict as Shepard fell down onto his knees halfway towards the beam, barely hanging onto his life.
As his knees hit the ground, a monotone silence filled reality... As if everything stopped, the ships and the fights, the energy and the catalyst.
Time has frozen, explosions have stood in their positions and debris were not flying, the energy conduit itself was halted to the point you could count each individual particle...
A new person has materialized in front of the Commander, seemingly a half human half Quarian and part synthetic life form.
"Greetings organic..." the visual appearance said.
Shepard was barely hanging onto a sense of logic as his eyes wandered over the person in confusion.
"Allow me to introduce myself to you, I am the Cortex Central Intelligence, also called in your cycle as the Crucible."
The commander seemed hesitant at first but managed to breathe out "Are you the Catalyst ?"
The figure stood still in it's motion and responded in a neutral tone "The system of the Crucible does not include a Catalyst system, I was created to serve as the emergency trigger for activation of the Cortex."
Shepard looked at Earth as time stood still, he looked back towards the VI and asked "Can you defeat the Reapers ?"
At this point the VI looked over to Earth and spoke "No. The Cortex is not a weapon of destruction, it is a backup plan."
The commanders tone has slid from calm to slight anger "Then help us stop them!" he groaned in a demanding manner."
Cortex approached Shepard and explained "This system is not a weapon, it has been created by the species eons before to serve as a reboot, a new chance, another war."
The VI walked over to the side of the bridge, saying "I cannot defeat the Reapers, that is not what the Crucible was built for. The Crucible was designed to reverse the flow of time to the beginning of the Reaper invasion. A work of a species able to shift reality from 1 200 cycles before this one. When it is believed the reapers can be defeated, the Crucible, me, are abandoned for the second alternative."
The figure then proceeded to step back up to Shepard and asked him "If you have found a way to stop the Reapers, you may order me to deactivate and finish the war. If you have not yet found one you may give your agreement to push time back to the first interaction of this cycle with the reapers... So far this cycle has been restarted 21 times."
Shepard has taken a last look at Earth burning in defeat, the dead bodies flying in vacuum and the Starchild standing behind him, with a look of defeat he glanced back over to Cortex and said "Please."
The VI dissapeared out of sight as time continued, the Crucible has begun imploding into a bright expanse of light which then slowed down to a complete crawl, tearing the Citadel into a form of a black hole which quickly expanded across Sol, and the rest of the galaxy.
