My desktop is probably 10 years or more old. I am finally wanting to upgrade. However I am perfectly happy with my monitor and speakers and woofer and such. I assume I will be screwed in this regard however. How much have the back connections changed on desktops over the last 10 years? For example: I think my monitor has the older DVI or perhaps VGA connection. (And no I am not building my own computer under any circumstance.)

VGA is so old that you typically wont find it on GPUs anymore, and it hasn't been for some time now.
Though if you're using DVI there are still cards with that. Looking at the 1060 it does have a DVI-D port in addition to the standard HDMI and DP 1.4 ports. You can also always if need be find a cable that converts from DP to DVI-D or VGA.
The main downsides to the older connectors is either a limit in resolution, or drop in image quality once you go above a certain resolution but given that you're using a 10 year old monitor it's not likely to hit any of those limitations where DVI-D is concerned.
Other than that USB has been widespread connectors for other peripherals for a very long time now, and you can always get an adapter if need be to convert something to USB.

The standards now are HDMI and Display Port however even today most cards come with a DVI port. At least one. VGA is practically dead, although I'm sure you could still find a budget HP or Dell Web/Email Tower with one, though idk what you want to do with this tower but I'd recommend staying away from those type of systems just because they're usually junk all around anyway.

If your monitor uses DVI, you are golden. If it takes VGA only, you should just buy a new monitor that uses DVI, Displayport, or at least HDMI.
The problem is that the DVI ports on most modern video cards are all DVI-D, that means it's digital-output only and you won't be able to use one of those cheap passive DVI to VGA converters. So instead you have to spend money on a more expensive active signal converter and you're much better off buying a new monitor at that point.
