With a thunderous belch the Ogre threw the remains of his pie, half-eaten, across the room.
“That wasn’t very satisfying” he snarled, get the chef in here!”
Quickly, the guards dragged the poor trembling chef in to face his master.
“This simply isn’t good enough!” thundered the Ogre “I paid good gold sovereigns for you, but you simply aren’t selling enough pies to the peasants. And now I hear that they’re complaining about the quality as well!”
“We had some problems with the recipe sir” protested the chef “the cooks kept changing their minds about the ingredients. But we’ve made some improvements and we’re ready to work on some new pies in the same range”.
“No” snapped the Ogre, “it’s too late, you must throw this pie in the bin and work on the new range now, that should sell much better”
“But sir” protested the chef feebly “the peasants came to see us and said they wanted more pies in this range. They don’t like the look of the new one at all”
“I don’t care what the peasants want” exploded the Ogre “they should be buying more pies, not complaining!”
“Yes sir, but perhaps if you allowed us to sell some more pies in the range they like, they might not complain so much”
“Oh, very well” grumbled the Ogre “you can sell them some more group portions, but nothing else. I want you working on the new pie.”
“I really don’t think that will satisfy them sir. They were hoping for some more individual servings, they were even offering to pay extra for it.”
“No” said the Ogre, “I’ve had enough of this pie for now. If the peasants want more you can sell them some pictures of it, that will keep them happy! Now, tell me about the new pie. Did you make the changes I commanded?”
“Yes sir”, said the chef, miserably, “as you instructed the new pie will only be available for groups, no more individual servings, and the condiments will be extra.”
“Excellent”, cried the ogre, “now go and get on with the cooking.”
As the chef was leaving, the Ogre called out “oh, and this had better be a success, you don’t want to go the way of my other servants” he said, pointing to the wall where the skeletons of the town planner, the adventurer and the general were still hanging.
