Trying out the game during the sale , free trial for 10 hours - and NOT liking the Check Point Save system, at all!! That is why I didn't buy the game in the first place, as I loved ME1&2, and at least enjoyed ME3. As I understand it, sometimes you CAN do a "regular" save?? Can someone explain how that works? I had purchased Bioshock Infiniti a few years ago (on sale for $13.67!), played a few days, and then the game screwed up, lost my save game (the ONLY save game), and it was over! I never re-started the game! Can't see paying $20 for a possible repeat of that!! How can even console kiddies put up with Check Point saves??It's an ancient leftover from when consoles didn't have HDD, or even Flash Ram, but used a small EEPROM to "save" the little info it could Something was seriously wrong at Bioware to go with a checkpoint save system - it was good that EA fired whoever was in charge and made that decision, too bad they took out the entire group

Haven't played since launch but if I recall, you had auto save points in everything and during the main story related missions you couldn't manually save at all. It's one of the games biggest issues, and one that will go unresolved.

The game is autosave only until you get past the prologue and make it to the Nexus. Then you can manually save whenever, except during combat or "story missions." The definition of the latter is a bit fuzzy. Also, there is no quick save at all.

It sucks the only good it does force you to pay attention to what your doing, I guess.

My guess: everybody was a throwing a hissy fit about the animations so those got fixed first and then they added more auto-save slots (I think).

You will get autosaves frequently, and also chapter and mission saves at the beginning of each which are useful incase you really fuck up. But no saving mid dialogue to try out other options.

I think they disabled saves during missions because missions tend to have significant story choices and this helps to discourage people from doing the usual 'save, choose, reload' if they don't like the result. Makes the choices more of a thing, I guess.
I can't think of any other reason for doing it!
In the end it's no big deal. You lose a couple of minutes at most if you need to go back to an autosave and most of the game you can save whenever you want.

Also in one of the patches Chapter saves were added (at the beginning of a mission), with chapter/mission number and name. The thing with the checkpoint system is that quicksave could mess with mission triggers, so it was removed (I might be mistaken).

Very likely - due to some engine\tech-related issues we'll never hear about. Like a manual save in a wrong time'place possibly ruining the entire further level scripting. Another possible reason is that they had too much shit to worry about at a time, and the manual saving had slipped down their priority list. Obviously, they had never created objectives like 'to make a player's life more miserable'.
