I think MP should have been free to play from the start but it is a different topic. However, this move presents a splendid opportunity to give a boost to the dwindling player base. N7 day could be the best time to introduce this change. I have the following reasons:
1. Such move is not without precedent. For example, Brink was made to free-to-play. Of course, Brink was released 5 years ago, whereas MEA is “fresh” game. However, there is no reason to lock up MP behind the pay-wall of an ill received SP.
2. As far as I understand, microtransactions (MT) are the main revenue for MP. A new wave of players will give a boost to MT.
3. Devs already made packs for uncommon characters, it is the logical next step to crate these packs for rare and UR characters as well. IMO, it is win-win situation: players can buy what they want and ignore or grind for the rest, and devs can make more money. However, this move makes sense only if there is large enough player base.

They did it with ME 3 at one point (on PC only, as I recall) but if ME:A MP was doing as well, I doubt they'd have announced the end of support.

I'm confused. Isn't it already free to play? You mean making the MP a standalone product that would be free to download, separate from the single player?
The question would be how they implemented it. If they tried to include advertising, then absolutely not. And they would. Every game would start with an unskippable 60 second ad for the latest Madden. So... no, in the end this probably wouldn't work. One could make it nice, but I don't think EA would do it that way.

I think Andromeda cost is very low now, and having a price threshold helps. Yes, the game is depopulating, but repopulating it with the F2P angry young men is not exactly a good idea. Plus, I doubt it will improve the population. Overall, you are better off solo than with F2P.

I've never installed or played it, but I did at one point add the DAI trial to my Origin account, specifically because it came with unlimited free MP. I think it would be a good move if they did the same thing for MEA. Some people might get hooked enough on the SP to buy the full game, and even if people just play the MP, a bigger MP population is a bigger MP population. I'm a hopeless optimist though so your opinion may vary.

I joined a gold lobby last night (public) there was a level 1, rank I Soldier in there as host with 94 apex rating who as soon as i joined immediately clicked his readiness. I left ofc i did, hoping that the level 1 soldier would forget to unready and then launch into a gold game on their own <wicked evil grin> but i clicked again for a gold lobby and the same level 1 soldier was still there .. alone. Don't get me wrong, i'm all for a bit of gaming fun, but something was telling me that it would just be a wipe fest even with 2 of us  SO yeah it was quiet for a while last night on golds, but managed to find a game shortly after and managed to get the 10 extra apex i needed to join the 40k club I don't think FTP will help matters that much, it will just fill the game lobbies in silver and gold with yet more of these level 1 soldiers who have no clue as to how difficult it is on gold. On reflection i wish i'd gone in with the level 1 soldier now and done my usual duelist thing of charging at a distant enemy and see how the level 1 faired holding up in the top left corner of firebase magma.. quivering in their boots |

EDIT: This also means playing a lot of Zero/Remnant, as that seems to be a popular preset that almost always has a lobby running it. |

Even if it were free-to-play, chances are the game at its current stage won't be getting many players looking to play it long-term. Being free is not enough, the game has to be attractive for people to dedicated themselves to playing it; also it has to offer support long-term.
I do think being free-to-play is a great idea, I have defended it in the past for DAIMP. But as we all know, it won't happen. Even if it did, Andromeda is already dead.

It may have worked when Andromeda was still somewhat new and fresh. But when they announced the end of support, that dream ended. Why? Because what is the point in putting further time and effort into a game that is not going to go anywhere or receive fresh and exciting new things further down the road. Unless you are a die hard fan of MEA, there is tons of new things to play out currently, and which will be released shortly in the days to come.
Not everyone can stomach playing a dead game just for a full manifest.

You can't simply repopulate a dying community by making the game F2P. Remember how that turned out for titles like Evolve...? If the game has a lot of flaws you can't get people to stay just because the game is free. That being said I wish they had made MP-only game within the (original) Mass Effect universe and launch it as a F2P game. I'm always thinking Warframe here... - but now, releasing this kind of game as F2P is not really worth the trouble unfortunately...
