I didn't want to put this in the spec post because I wasn't sure if anyone would respond timely.
So I recently purchased a 1080ti and an new monitor 1440p 144hz monitor with gsync. I made this upgrade after using a 1080p 60hz t.v. for years.
Anyway. I know Andromeda isn't optimized well. I'm using geforce experience to use the most optimal settings for the game. I find that FPS fluctuates from 70-100 depending on what's going on.
By chance yesterday I put the game in window mode (takes up only 1/4th of the screen) for a minute, to find that the FPS is rock solid at 120fps (what I limited the game at). Why is this? I've done some research about it, but can't find any answers. I tried borderless window mode (takes up full screen), and again I'm getting the same performance as I did when full screen was the display mode.
Any thoughts on the matter would be great. I suppose I can't replicate 120fps and have the game take up the full screen...

You can see the difference between 70 FPS and 120 FPS?

You can see the difference between 70 FPS and 120 FPS? while i dont know if "see" is the right word, i can definitely notice everything flow a lot smoother, like water, to the point where the 120 fps looks weird compared to the 60, since i am used to 60fps

When it's in windowed mode isn't the resolution lower? If it is only using a small portion of a 1440p screen, it sounds like it was at 720p. Then when you set it to windowed borderless, it was running at 1440p again. I'd try lowering some graphics settings to get it up to 120+fps. IIRC, a 1080ti can't max out MEA at 1440p/144hz. Andromeda also has shoddy programming as well, so it may not even be possible to get above 120 frames at 1440p.

IDK the actual hardware reason, but I do know that windowed mode is always a good option when your hardware is struggling to cope with a game.

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.

You can see the difference between 70 FPS and 120 FPS? Yes, I can, and you might too. The internet lol... Every human can feel it, and can appreciate the difference provided enough time in front of each resolution to have enough "sample size". There is science regarding the human eye and corresponding "shutter speed" and "native FPS". Proof: military pilots have identified one frame of a fighter correctly at 220 fps. Hope this helps!

Well, what I actually meant was "notice without actually running a testing protocol." Sloppy language.

Well, what I actually meant was "notice without actually running a testing protocol." Sloppy language. Everyone's eyes and brains are wired differently, plus there's the whole deterioration due to age which typically starts at around 25-27. OP may very well be able to see a difference, and as was already pointed out, there have been tests where some people were able to pick out a single frame difference at very high framerates. Personally I can't see any differences once the framerate gets above 110 or so, but I can definitely feel a difference in the responsiveness of the controls as the FPS keeps going up.

IDK the actual hardware reason, but I do know that windowed mode is always a good option when your hardware is struggling to cope with a game. Not unless the window is smaller than original full screen resolution. Also at least on Windows 7, windowed mode is still a bit slower than exclusive full screen, havent really gamed on Win10 laptop. also what ArabianIGoggles said

Plus, the monitor matters. I used 144hz monitors so 60 FPS vs 120 FPS is a huge difference.
