Ive been playing game for a long time but have always saved best crafting stuff for end games but I have yet to get any kind of success message
Is there an actual trick, is it random, percentages so low that say using the bear pieces is not worth actual game time trying

Is this that "40% chance of masterwork" stuff? I had it work a few times, but not often (though Essence of Perfection has 100% chance, but I think there's only one in the game).
I'm not sure what determines whether you'll be successful, but in my experience saving and reloading doesn't work.
I usually just went for the fade-touched stuff instead. I found that more fun.

Same here. The only time it seemed to work for me was on my second attempt at making something. Of course, that was after I used my best stuff in the first attempt. So now I just go for fade-touched extra abilities that are a sure thing. Heal on Kill, Hidden Blades, Chain Lightning, Guard on Hit....all are extremely useful.

The masterwork success chance is rolled as soon as you loot the masterwork component, NOT when you do the actual crafting.
For example, when you loot a 20% chance of masterwork component, that 20% chance is rolled right away and stored with the component. Therefore, saving before a crafting attempt and reloading after a masterwork failure will not help you.
What you can do is this: save before you craft. Craft an easy, cheap item with one of your masterwork components. If you do not get a masterwork, the masterwork component failed its roll when you looted it and will never give you a masterwork result. Save again. You have now removed a useless masterwork component from your inventory. If you do get a masterwork, the masterwork item succeeded its roll when you looted it and will always give you a masterwork item. Reload, and craft the item you want using this component.

Might have some further research on this
It appears if you loot say 3 great bear claws. If the first 1 fails then they all fail if the theory of the percentage upon looting is true which really stinks Tried selling 1 and using other 2 and they failed as well. Not sure if 1 works they all will but I bet they do I hope they do a much better job with this and explaining how crafting and when/how you should add certain crafting items to weapons. I still see people asking if I’m a warrior is armor penetration better than say critical. This isn’t even a game thing. Thus is x develop clarifying for the community

i think gileadan is right with his theory from what i have experienced in my playthroughs. It is the moment you loot the item that will determine if the master crafting process will be a success or not. But guys, don't bother with these items, i think all other regular masterworks items are way more fun and at least as effective as the essence of perfection if not more... Personnally, i only use my essence of perfection for my main dagger when i role a dual wield rogue because i think this is the only scenario where it's worth it. For the little story, my biggest hit in dragon age inquisition was the result of one of these "regular" masterworks 40 000k damage with a walking bomb applied by a stealthy fulldraw...so i hope each one of you guys have already tried this one at least one time because it's so funny and so insane.
