Hi all,
For some reason, the dark areas in my game are REALLY REALLY dark. When standing in a well lit area, like on EOS, the game looks great. But when you're indoors, underground, or in a dark world like HAVARL, the shadows in the game make the screen incredibly dark.
The brightness on my settings is all the way up and it doesn't help at all.
I tried to upload a pic but the forum is giving me an error.

Have you tried adjusting your TV/monitor?
Or tried playing in a darkened room?

Yeah I've tried adjusting the TV's picture, and I generally play in the dark anyway.

It is fine that dark areas should remain dark but not unvisible. And you checked that already when you enter in darker area from shiny outside the vision is very dark for a moment and after a second you can see everything clearly in the area ? That is probably Frostbite 3 engine doing that. :-) There are "dark" glitches in some places those are still don't patched i think. Same here. However inside vaults the dark areas are a bit brighter since the latest patches and seems fine for me. The Vortex Bar person standing in the dark corner that one is still dark.
You can adjust your TV's back brightness, overall brightness and contrast as well. And you can adjust the black color too. Black is set to mid. on my Full HD tv. And play in dark room because the sunlight kills your vision you can't see anything on your TV/monitor.

try to change the hdr /dolby option This. Set the in-game High Dynamic Range to disabled. Or turn it on, rather. HDR absolutely fixes this issue, if one is playing with HDR-capable equipment. I noticed that these very dark areas became incredibly realistic, in terms of lighting, once I started playing with UHD/HDR10.

Unfortunately I have an old TN 1080p screen which doesn't support it. The game fired up being too dark for some reason once, and changing the setting from 'auto' to 'off' was the solution for me.

Yeah, choosing the most optimal setting for your equipment is crucial. I hope it didn't sound like I was correcting you. I was trying to supplement, rather than replace, your comment. I play on PS4 Pro with a very nice TV. I can't achieve high-end PC levels of performance, but this is a beautiful game in my estimation. Maybe I'm easily impressed. Some of the coolest features are the small touches. The orange glitter on the "remnant" trees is realistically scattered on nearby items and structures. The bioluminescent lifeforms in Hvarl's water really look great. While in space, the stars and planets have beautiful, realistic atmospheric effects. The lighting is crisp and lifelike. Dust, debris, pollen and bugs are always in the air. It made me appreciate the artistic efforts of the developers. I'm guessing that many who trash the game's visuals never actually play enough to appreciate these touches; never got to see them; or simply don't care. The game has issues, no doubt; but there's so much that is good, also.

The game has issues, no doubt; but there's so much that is good, also. Even with my "just OK" TN-panel, the game looks terrific, I don't get the complaints either. I don't think I'm easily impressed though. I'm currently playing this year's Prey, and even being on CryEngine 3, it doesn't look as impressive as MEA does, while it performs about the same.
