There was something about Blackwall's story that reminded me of several psychological phenomena at play. So far, I've seen examples of Kitty Genovese and the bystander effect, the Milgram experiment and the Freeze response. Now, while it's a tragic story regardless of what's true or not, the general gist is that a woman named Kitty Genovese was murdered outside her apartment in front of 38 witnesses. Despite calling for help, everyone who saw it had froze because they didn't know what to do or were hoping someone else would do something about it. At that time, there was no 911 emergency number, anyone who wanted to report an incident had to call the local precinct. Problems with that story revealed that the media had taken too many liberties for the sake of sensationalism, as some only heard a cry, others didn't see Kitty, someone DID call the police, etc. Still, it was what led researchers to dub the bystander effect in that people are less likely to act in an emergency when there are multiple witnesses. The thought process is something like expecting that someone else would know what to do and will step forward. The two good things that did arise was the public's disgust that it happened and investigation into human behavior is still going strong 50 years later. The second was that it was this incident that started the 911 emergency line. The Milgram's experiment revealed a horrifying tendency of humans to instinctively defer to those who appear to be of higher authority, even at the cost of harming a fellow human. Every time test subjects questioned a volunteer who got an answer wrong, they had to administer an electric shock that steadily grew lethal. Despite complaints of a heart condition, the volunteer was still given shocks until they were supposedly "dead" because the researcher in the lab coat told the test subject to continue. As for the freeze response, it's a fairly self explanatory reaction that when faced with a high stress situation that you can neither fight nor flee from, a disassociative state would occur to distance the person away from the trauma. Victims of assault, soldiers and accident survivors are known for going into this state and it's been linked to severe cases of PTSD. Now as for where specifically I see these applied, Blackwall's men were probably going through the Milgram experiment, while Blackwall seemed to go through both the bystander and freeze effect.
Of course, I could just be full of it.

I probably have someone who has him in blue and silver. I never used the Templar armor on him but I remember having some other armor on him briefly and he looked so small! I don't recall the name of it, seems like me and Joe talked about it in the Blackwall thread on BSN Prime though. I may remember......some day,

Most of the DLC armor looks awful on male characters, so you are probably thinking of one of those. The only one that looks good, imo, is the Revered Defender Armor on Iron Bull, since spikes seem to fit his character. The Dragon Hunter Armor, the other Descent armors, and most especially the Skin That S____s from Trespasser, look beyond atrocious on the men.

On the upside, we finally get to see him without a shirt on in one of the armors! Wonder which one that was...

Where does the qunari armor come from?
Another question. I've never played the Descent dlc. Is it worth having? How long is it? Are there any new companion interactions/conversations?

I think I've heard that there's not much dialogue if any for Blackwall (please don't quote me, I'm not certain). But if you can, I think it's still worth doing just 'cause it's fun to watch the Inquisitor's boyfriend curbstomp enemies into the ground. It brings a smile to my face thinking about him bashing a hurlock into a pulp then holding his hand out to help his lady step over the corpse so she doesn't trip. "I don't know if I'm disturbed or aroused. Maybe scaroused?"

Qunari armor comes from the Spoils of the Qunari pack. You get a couple of armors, Skyhold décor, and a mount, oh and a bed. Descent is a dungeon crawl that adds 2 new characters just for the main quest. Regular banter doesn't fire with companions until the main quest is done, though most everyone has a few lines to say that are scripted in. If you like dwarfy lore and/or the Deep Roads, I would say to get it. It's really pretty! Here's one of Blackwall's lines right at the beginning of it: Edit to add pics of my Inquisitor Marcus and Cassandra modeling the qunari armors.

I've heard people say that Blackwall was an attempt to give fans the Duncan romance they never had. Does anyone feel like that's what Bioware was aiming for?

I never thought about it like that, but it's kind of true. Besides the obvious - being an older, honorable, beardy Warden or... "Warden" - they were both a bit wild and selfish in their youth, and now they've both matured beyond that.

Funny thing is that Duncan seems like the kind of guy that'd disappoint Blackwall given his ruthless pragmatism. Ohhh, it'd be awkward listening to a conversation between them!

Thank you for the responses opuspace and melbella ! That's a shame about extra interactions and dialogue but I guess I will get it eventually since I do mostly like the Deep Roads stuff and hopefully more lore and such! opuspace I hadn't heard that. I do know I was glad to finally get an older man as an option (since I'm an actual oldie irl). It was nice to have a more mature man. I did really want to romance Duncan in DA:O. I was sad when I wasn't able to! *glares at ogre*

Last one I fell for was ten years older than I. So it's strange to hear people say guys like Blackwall are unattractive. I guess it'd make sense if his beard was scraggly, but it's so smooth and glossy like an otter's fur. How does he keep it that way in the woods?

Funny, my husband is 10 yrs older than me I guess if you are some super young thing you might think Blackwall is old and gross, but even when I was young I liked older men. I like how in the game one of the followers (not sure who..Dorian maybe?) makes comments about Blackwalls questionable personal hygiene but he looked fine to me

There are a couple like that. I just listened to them on the YouTube banter video. There's one where Blackwall asks how Dorian does that thing with his hair and Dorian replies, "with proper hygiene and grooming," and that Blackwall should get acquainted with them. There's also the one where Blackwall asks Dorian to stop calling him "that hairy lummox" and then goes on to list all the times it's happened.

I guess it says a lot about a fanbase depending on who they like! The dialogue between Dorian and Blackwall is great, Blackwall's got this idea of who Dorian is and Dorian's playing it up to silly proportions until finally they reach an understanding that both are more than they appear.

Dorian and Varric or Solas and Cole are fun to pair him with as well, it's like a game of who can poke each other the most or what the deuce are you talking about?
