I've yet to RP a character that doesn't recruit everyone. I feel like I'm missing out on character development each relationship can offer. Even my Fade and magic disliking Inky begrudgingly recruited Cole, because he helped her at Therinfal and she knew she needed allies of various talents. Since then she's become a bit less afraid and a bit more cocky when it comes to spirits and demons.

[DA:A] Since my 'Warden was Dalish and also kills the three humans in the opening, he understood Velanna's belligerence. If he were any other character, though, I'd have killed her. Oops, I forgot about Velanna. I've killed her a couple of times. Always recruited everyone else though.
In DA2, I always recruit everyone, but I've kicked Anders out after the Ella incident. I don't like doing that though, because you miss out on stuff in Act 3 if you can't do his quests.

No but really, I don't refuse anyone because it feels like I'm not experiencing the game the way it's supposed, I don't know That's what multiple/alternate playthroughs are for... Well, I liked Morrigan okay. 'Not in love with her (canon romance only for RP reasons, Leliana is better IMO). She's pretty overrated if you ask me. I love Vivienne, though.

I'm not sure if this counts but in my very first playthough of origins, right after talking to cullen, Wynne attacked me (probably something I said) and I didn't feel like reloading. (I should of reloaded.) When I replayed the game I saved Wynne but I couldn't make sense of my warden leaving zeveren alive, same with Nathaniel. I need to play awakening and leave him alive at some point . . . I think that's it Unless Loghain counts?

Nathaniel: Still with the deadly looks, my lady? Velanna: "My lady" is such a human thing to call someone. Nathaniel: It is a term of respect. You think it's human to be respectful? Velanna: Now you're mocking me. Nathaniel: I think you're a lovely woman, and due some respect. So I call you a lady. Velanna: Well... stop it!

There's a whole evolving string of banter between the two. You really want to hear the whole thing.

Unfortunately, the game is so short it's hard to hear everything unless you just wander around aimlessly waiting for banter to trigger. I don't usually have the patience for that. It's a bit different in DAI since it takes forever to get anywhere anyway; I don't feel like I'm wasting quite as much time hoping for banter.

I do it a lot. Keeps things interesting and forcing myself to use the other companions and try not to have too much favoritism.

My take is that I'd rather recruit them and hate them, then I can experience their pissed off dialogue and see if there's any 'I hate you' moments. Better than not having anything at all. Sometimes the disapproval can be really well acted and pretty amusing. The only time I'd imagine not recruiting someone would be if I was worried Viv would be the Divine and I was going for Leliana, or if they seriously jarred with my character's personality. In my Templar Hawke run I got Anders and Merrill then totally ignored them for the rest of the game. Got a bit of a shock when she suddenly turned up again at the end. But then my next run was centred around both of them so it evened out. I'd never just always ignore someone anymore. I did that with Zev, Sera and Sten at first, only to find later on that they were in fact pretty great given a chance. I've learnt my lesson, everyone gets a shot. Now I just wish BioWare would put more 'I hate you' content into the game, like punching Solas. That'd be awesome. Ppl leaving the Inquisition or the Warden because they don't like you is lame to me, the world is ending. Stay and hate me, but stay.I love the disapproval dialogue with Solas. You actually have an argument with him where you can bring up some good points, so much better then Vivi's where get railroaded by her. Also, you can punch him. I would have loved to have the option to punch Sera. Dorain will stay even if you have low approval with him, as he gets that even if he doesn't like you he needs to help you in order to make sure that Cory doesn't take over the world. Also, you can punch him, but that will cause him to leave.

Origins - My first run of DAO, I, like another poster, did not go into the Tavern, and did NOT get Leliana. It was an accident... The guy said there were soldiers, and I didn't want to get caught by Loghain! haha. Since then, I've gotten ticked at her in DAI and creeped out by her staring in DAO. So, it's made me want to not recruit her. But, today, I got her Song for the first time, so now she's safe. ^^
-Another run of DAO, my Dalish Rogue fears dark magic like men with PTSD fear going to the war front. First time at camp, he told Morrigan to leave.
- I've flirted with not recruiting Wynne. She's like an opinionated Grandma and so, doesn't feel so much like a friend as an advisor I never asked for. If it weren't for the fact I'd have to spec Morrigan as a healing mage and then listen to her complain about my being a hero every single mission... I'd have probably skipped her this time. I also like her for her commentary on my romances; although I prefer Varric in that role. He does it better. EDIT ADD:
I find it super super meaningful for Loghain to be executed in Origins. And so he has never ever been recruited. I don't know if I'll ever not recruit him, because there is some complexity with a rule of mine to never harm Alistair. SO, if I don't want a dead/drunk Alistair, how do I keep Loghain alive? who knows. DA2 My first two runs of DA2, I didn't bother purchasing the Sebastian DLC. But considering he'll swear to destroy Kirkwall unless I kill Anders no matter if I rival/friend him, it makes him pretty unwantable as a character in my World States, as I play DAO->DA2->DAI crafting a new world I want to experience. The whole idea of him doing it just kinda ticks me off, even if he is unsuccessful ish. So, I could see myself not recruiting him again.
DAI, I've played twice.
- I have heavily considered not recruiting Viv for future runs, but I've got one Inquisitor planned that is supposed to like her-> her final chance. But seriously, two PTs where I recruit and she's only ever out for her companion quests makes her a bit of a wasted character for me. Also, I don't think I'd ever want her as Divine, but every time I recruit, I risk it. So, she could eventually meet the chopping block.
- I have also considered not recruiting Bull. My first PT, he was just like Viv. Recruited, found to be too squishy in battle, left back at camp. My second PT, I was trying to get the IB and Dorian romance to start, and played 75% of the game with him. I even dragged him along in Trespasser just so he could sass Lady Qun by saying, "Hell no, Lady Bas. I'm sticking with her." But I still don't love him; he makes all of the dirty jokes Zevran made, with none of the cleverness and charm. And I don't even want to do his romance because it involves a BDSM discussion that creeps me out. It honestly makes little sense to recruit him before Skyhold because you have no money to afford a mercenary company. Afterwards, you have so many voluntary soldiers, you no longer need to hire a mercenary company. The idea of him as a character is a grand one; I can debate the Qun vs the Chargers all day, and I've even recently been choked up about the lines dedicated to Krem, by Cole, if you choose the Qun Alliance. But use him in battle again? eh. I'm also never going to bother to RP a person who would choose the Qun alliance, so... His companion quest will never change for me so it lacks RP opportunity.

Iron Bull: Skipped his recruitment scene and killed him in Trespasser. Never told him no in his recruitment scene. I am too weak. I don't understand this wording. Are you saying that he shows up in Trespasser even if you don't recruit him? Did you just not go to the Storm Coast and finish that quest, so he was in limbo forever?

Varric's commentary is much better since it feels like it comes from a place of genuine caring, with Wynne it feels more like "But your duty! You can't romance. You have to live and die alone!" Yeah, I'm really not into her advice. The warden is not a kid Wynne. I also do dislike that I can't argue with her without sounding like a kid

Are you saying that he shows up in Trespasser even if you don't recruit him? Did you just not go to the Storm Coast and finish that quest, so he was in limbo forever? The wording was bad. Was trying to remember the variations of a lot of playthroughs and trying to keep the writing pace so I wouldn't cancel the post. So what I meant was, in some playthroughs Quizzy just didn't show up for the meeting. So the Iron Bull fought Venetori on the coast for all eternity, and thus didn't show up in Trespasser. In other playthroughs the Iron Bull was recruited, then cut down in Trespasser. But in none of my playthroughs has Quizzy shown up for the meeting and said no to recruiting the Chargers. Does that make more sense?

DAO: Sten. If he can lose control and murder an innocent family - who was trying to help him, no less - then I don't want him in my camp. (I forgave Zevran because he was cute and reputedly good in bed).
DAI: Vivienne. Too smug and too well-dressed. She's an affront to decent, pyjama-wearing people everywhere.

I love the disapproval dialogue with Solas. And Vivienne. My mage Trevelyan would have loved to be able to slap her smug, Circle-loving face.

Actually now I remember Kara 1.0 did leave Viv behind but recruited her in 2.0 because during the 1.0 run Dorian was going out and doing all the missions and wearing himself out.

In fact, I would say every companion should have a disapproval scene that either let's you punch/slap them or expel them.
