I played only DAO(base game) and DA2 once so these are my only natural choices about companions, they are not affected by metagame. DAO my refusal were: Sten because i had no reason to trust him. Zevran same reasons of Sten I just sent him away. Morrigan because not only she is insane in DAO but also because I suspected that she and her mommy were plotting something;their act in the wilds was so inept that even Alistair (Who isn't famous for his intelligence) understood that these two were up to something. Overall these were for me the people to not trust in DAO,Loghain is more peculiar since i never considered him a companion just a prisoner/soldier to use for Riordan's advice. DAII Anders because he was very much unstable and crazy. Isabela because i suspected something about her the moment she refused to follow me to meet the Arishock in act 1. You're a bit squeamish, you not? The word "squamish" is not really fitting in this context given the background of these characters. (A Qunari mass murderer, an assassin hired to kill the PC,an apostate witch blood mage who was hiding something,an unstable abomination and a thief who was hiding something) Overall metagamewise i do think I did well to reject them considering their gotcha moments my first impression of them wasn't wrong.

Of course was wrong for example in the case of Zevran. He is very loyal, if the warden care about him, just as Sten and Isabela. (But i like Morrigan and Anders too)

I always recruit everyone. It's also very rare that I've kicked a companion out of the core group. Oh Anders, I love to hate ya.

Nope. I always accept everyone, it's like a charity here lol No but really, I don't refuse anyone because it feels like I'm not experiencing the game the way it's supposed, I don't know I rather bring in everyone and have arguments or whatever than not recruit them I wonder how the people who didn't like Morrigan feels about Viv. She's a huge bitch. Morrigan at least was very clever and had a distinct personality. Viv is just a plain ambitious bitch. My mage is always arguing with her and her condescending tone bothers the fuck outta me. At least her banter with Sera is always funny. Key difference though is that Morrigan was largely apathetic and sometimes downright cold blooded in Origins. Vivienne would've hated sacrificing elves for some kind of blood magic health boost and would definitely not want you to purge the Circle.

Admittedly, I didn't very much like him in Awakening either, but I felt he was a bit more rounded off as a character in 2.

She gets friendlier, but will still approve of some pretty terrible things. Of course, being a fan of The Game, you can't trust Vivienne entirely either. Screw Orlesians and their mimics.

In Dragon Age: Origins I don't recruit the Secret Companion. Reasons being I like Alistair a hell of a lot more and don't feel like trading him in for a character I'm never going to change my opinion on.
In Dragon Age ][ I get everyone.
In Dragon Age: Inquisition I no longer recruit Sera and Vivienne.

I had a discussion about this the other day and came to the conclusion that the choice that benefits everyone is to make Alistair marry Anora, so you stabilize Ferelden, AND recruting Loghain to the Grey Wardens, simply because the order needs a great general like him.

It's too bad though that this outcome is locked behind Alistair's disposition by the end of his personal quest.

Yeah, that scenario only works if you harden him. Otherwise he backs out of the marriage deal when you recruit Loghain. I had to reload, increase his approval, get and do his quest, wait for the follow up conversations to trigger, then re-do the Landsmeet to get the end I wanted. He deserved to be miserable in that PT for making me do all that extra work!

It does not undermine Riordan's argument,it is simply Alistair the one who start his personal rant. I'm not really sure why Riordan did not used his GW rights to recruit Loghain on his own (the thing they call conscription)or way che did not said a word about US at Eamon's estate,or why he does not decide to recruit even more people than just Loghain but i guess is all because of those forced endings nonsense and the ritual nonsense, that's way i assume they even decided to kill him with that weird tactic in the end...... Bah so I had no other way but to resolve the issue with his execution(Alistair not Loghain),can't allow a desertion so that everyone can feel entitled to follow his example,i can just imagine some random soldier saying how they want to leave because a GW left.

I usually recruit everyone ..
DAO - Everyone. For Loghain, it depends whether I want Alastair as a warden or a king.
DA II - Everyone, even Sebastian.
DAI - Everyone initially until I sampled Viviene and Sera's personalities. Thereafter, in later PTs, I left them out totally. I hardly use them in my parties. Viviene get a brush twice for her dispel rift skill, Sera just for the prank of scaring the shit out of her at that haunted mansion. I did their personal quests and decided it's not worth the effort. Never took either of them into the Fade though given a choice, I'd take Viviene.

I recruit everybody and never get rid of them or let them get killed and have never had anyone leave (except Seb at the very end of DA2 cuz I'm not about to let that crybaby have his way). I do ignore folks that I recruit though, esp Viv, who I detest with a passion. I also tiptoe around DAO Leliana because getting ninja romanced by her once was one too many times for me. I also almost never use Varric because he bores me but I do like him. On the subject of Tallis...I've never liked her but always do her DLC. Recently though, I watched her entire Youtube series and liked her better in it than in the DLC. In the Youtube series she seemed more likable and her voice was less grating. Plus she's prettier on screen than she is in the DLC. The DLC gave her a ferret face...I wish they had made her less harsh looking in the DLC. ETA: Loghain is never even an option for me because I consider him a crazy loonie tune traitor.

DAO: I ditch Oghren as soon as possible - that vulgar sleazy drunk is creepy. DA2: Never recruited Sebastien since I did only one run and didn't buy that DLC. DAI: First run I recruited everyone - after that I usually leave Sera and Iron Bull out.
